Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This Hungarian Rhapsody by Liszt was recorded in around 1923.

Incredible! My late husband, Jean Valz, had a lesson with Emil Sauer at the Paris Conservatory. He never forgot the instruction. I wish I could hear Sauer play it. This Hungarian Rhapsody #12 means much to me because Jean played it when he was 13 years old at the Marseille Conservatory, and he won the competition over all the older students. The Internet is great! I wish Jean was around to hear what they can do with old recordings. Amazing! Thanks for posting this.

I am looking to study with a piano professor who can prepare me for competitions. Do you know of any great teacher who is old school like that and takes on students privately, please let me know. Thanks so much. Emil von Sauer is my favorite pianist, I believe Morton Estrin took lessons with Emil von Sauer and he was a fantastic pianist and teacher in his own right, but Estrin passed away a few years ago. I never studied with him unfortunately.

Liszt fire still alive and if you want the best teacher, take the same one who initiated liszt. Gipsy musicians. Liszt had a spark of gipsy fire.

Wonderful! In the tradition of the legendary pianists! I studied this with Adele Marcus, wo studied it with Josef Lhevinne. I love von Sauer's tender lyricism, so heartfelt.

Emil von Sauer was an incredible pianist, one of my favorite of all time alongside Josef Lhevinne. You studied with Adele Marcus who was a student of Josef Lhevinne but you also studied with Morton Estrin. I believe Estrin studied with Vera Maurina Press who was a pupil of Emil von Sauer. But some people told me that Estrin might have even had a direct lineage from von Sauer at some point, is that true? I hope you are well. I hear your recordings you post on Saturdays from home, great playing, very reminiscent to these masters.

I put up the music for the Danube paraphrase as it's quite hard to get hold of otehrwise. If you're looking for the Hungarian Rhapsodies, they're widely available (!)
