Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This is his rendition of the arrangement of melodies from Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz by Schultz-Evler, a recording made in around 1925.
I have uploaded the sheet music here (it is copyright expired): www.megaupload.com/?d=HLFZERUW

It's amazing to listen to a pianist born in actual romatic period play.

This is the first time i enjoy listening to this composition, Its magic and electric and more alive than most nowday music. Theres a spark of gipsy music in it.

The conception of interpretation of Sauer is so strong. You have the impression he has control of the whole. Its not putting parts together but a unity . His deep understanding of the music sheets shows his ability as a composer too. I recommend to everybody to listen to the compositions Sauer wrote himself. As a pupil of Liszt he is the one who is the bridge to Gustav Mahler.. A true treasure of european culture.

This is an acoustic recording made in Germany in March 1925 for the Vox company, Berlin.

Ah--my apology. Often, the recordings don't simulate the brilliance of these artists in live performance. Emil von Sauer was an amazing pianist indeed.

Wonderful. One can really hear what liszt's students have in common. Amazing how one man changed what piano-playing is all about. Interesting to compare this with the wonderful Raoul Koczalski, who comes from Chopin's tradition, so different in approach to touch and rubato. One can almost imagine the characteristics of those two giants through their students. Please post more.

@billyguns, this IS the Schultz-Evler transcription. Lhevinne truncates his performance of the same work on his acoustic record (omitting the intro and a section later on). Sauer plays more of the original transcription.

This Artur Schulz-Evler vrsion is quite nice, though Josef Lhevinne plays it with more lightness and panache, rhythmically speaking. I personally play it with a lighter touch, though the rolls are not always accurate to the live version he may have played.

Very Beautiful version of Blue Dunabe. Too bad today students stop composing music.

This is a live recording, not a roll!

I agree...the playing favoured today is either way too sentimental and juicy compared to these... There is also a lot of techtonics in these playings, people used to know well what the composer was doing, not sure it is the case now, or it's old fashioned to analyse etc etc and play then...

If you want to hear a truly lyrical rendition that is both beautiful and technically superior I suggest you listen to the Jorge Bolet recording live at Carnegie Hall in 1974, From a pianist's standpoint it's the best I've ever heard. Better even than Lhevinne
