I love how Emma doesn’t wear makeup and dresses normally, not playing up her sex appeal more than the guys do. I’ve never seen a RU-vid channel where a woman is just herself, talking about her expertise, without the need to be all made up, too. We need to be reminded how beautiful women are in their “natural state”-Emma certainly is!

Alongside the excellent exercises you can do with the gym ball I really like using the TRX suspension trainer with which you can work your whole body with every exercise enhancing the core ( back, abdomen,and hips). For someone wanting to spend most time on the bike 20-30 min on the TRX a couple of times a week will maintain great over all strength.

I use free weights and push ups for upper body and core strength. £60 bought me a set of dumbbells and barbell from a well known UK catalogue shop a couple of years ago. I noticed from doing squats with these weights that a weak knee problem I had has totally gone and I also now have more power when out cycling too. 30 to 45 minutes, 3 times per week is what I do with a few core exercises and I'm feeling fitter now than I have done for many years, being in my 50's now. Definitely one of my better purchases!

Great video. For me, cycling is part of an overall approach to fitness that includes weight training and core. I know many people don’t like hitting the gym, but it’s really important to how I feel, look, and perform. I alternate lifting and riding each day about 5 days a week. If you combine cycling (or running) and weight training you’re in physical shape for pretty much anything. I think people don’t really understand the benefits for building lean muscle mass, especially as they age. I know it’s not as fun a riding, but for me, I’d rather be more well rounded than singularly a body builder or cyclist. But hey, I’m the disciplined type so it may come easier for me.

I haven't cross-trained in some years, I used to hike regularly, and I had a workout that I did every night, but since I started cycling to work I kind of let that go, only hiking occasionally. one day on my way to work, I got a flat in the way to meet the work van. called the office, and they sent the van to meet me, so I wouldn't lose the hours. now it was 5am on St Patrick's day, so still dark. as the van got there, I pulled the bike off the road and layed it down in what I thought was a concealed location, went to work when i got back though, in the daylight, I could see immediately that I should have taken the time to lock it up. I could clearly see the my bike was no longer there. I had had the van let me off at the meet site and walked there because it was such a nice day. in that moment with my cellphone dead I wished i had taken the offer because I was stuck for walking the rest of the 14 miles home. my point is, I was so out of shape for walking, and didn't even realize it from being so for on the bike... so YES, work on other muscles, if for no other reason than that you may find yourself walking.
@MallusDB
@MallusDB 6 лет назад
Something to add, think it might have been mentioned a bit before, these are fairly advanced core exercises. Work your way up to them, if you don't have the core to complete them properly you will end up injuring yourself more. Keep it simple to start, don't add any other equipment such as gym balls. That extra instability could cause too much strain on smaller muscle groups.

Deffo solid excercises and great showing; clean and clear. Just remember to take them slowly and don't go all-in until you can keep your balance and positioning in all of these :D. Posture and correct movement are worth ten times more than simply getting a certain nr of reps.
@gcn
@gcn 6 лет назад
Cheers Daniel, do you use core exercises as part of your training?
@danieljespersen1768
@danieljespersen1768 6 лет назад
Hey guys: absolutely! Since the core is such an integral part of all physical activity you do, it is one of my favourite muscle groups to focus on. In addition to the ones you guys uploaded, I also really enjoy the Russian Twist (a floor version of the window wiper basically, but changing the methodology and also being able to choose level of difficulty by additional weight and choosing to balance on your backside or feet down to start with). And another one I always add is the 'Bent-over Barbell Row', more upper back but certainly core stability and lower back (part of the core) come well in to play, something really assisting with the positions and long term endurance on a road bike :). Thanks again for all your awesome videos and especially training tutorials in general, keep up the good work! (P.S. not sure how you guys are with linking to other YT channels so I will refrain from doing so, though I can always send a direct link to you all and you can have a look privately, then maybe incorporate personal variants or make your own more bike oriented video towards it).

Even though some of these are helping your lower back, you should really never feel any strain in your lower back as that can lead to injury. Make sure you feel it in your front and oblique core along with the glutes. From someone with a stress fracture, and lots of experience fixing back injuries with core exercises.
@javorgeorgiev6130

I don't know anything particularly interesting. Sets of 20 leg raises until I go over 200. Then keep going some more without counting as I've been too lazy to figure a way out to increase the difficulty, so I just keep adding more repetitions and it ends up eating up my time. I couldn't do a proper 10 the first month. 2 minute planks with one leg raised. Then sideplanks. Again, lacking any sort of method I make sure I've done more than 4 repetitions of each and the rest is bonus. 20 push ups until I reach at least 200. If I'm still good to go for more I continue without counting. We have almost untouched calisthenics equipment a few meters from where I live, but I could never be bothered to train where I can be seen in public. I could definitely use some more advanced exercises instead of adding more time/repetitions to the same old stuff.

As a trainer/ cyclist I use all those exercises with the exception of one: Dips on the ball. Most people will screw up their shoulders that way! Triceps are not " core" and there are many excellent, safe ways to strengthen them that won't extend the shoulder dangerously .

Hey Derek, which is your favourite core exercise?

Emma is not really a cyclist. She was an agent for MI6 and she made very bad people do these exercises.

The universe is telling me to stop ignoring the fact that taking up cycling even more seriously has actually made me neglect my core, leading to back problems. I really need to make the time to do this again. I used to have really strong abdominals but I know they have gone to flab comparatively.

Hey reddaB, hopefully, these exercises will help you build up your core muscles 👍

Alright guys, there's only 3 exercises you need to do if you which to become a powerhouse cyclist: Squats Deadlifts Goodmornings No Smith machine. Barbell only, bros. And dont forget to stretch well, too.

If the previous intro with Si didn't inform us, this is the proof of Emma's pro strength core.
