France also has a _spicy_ nuclear defense policy - it includes warning shots. This is referred to as the deployment of a "pre-strategic" nuclear missile (which has a lower yield), which is intended to indicate that France has reached its red line, and the next step is full-scale employment of strategic nuclear weapons. They're the only nation on the planet who approaches their nuclear policy this way.

This is called brinkmanship. Whoever is williing to escalate the furthest, without actually going to war, wins because the other guy backs down. This works only so far as the other guy actually backs down. France has 290 nukes. More than enough to be a VERY credible deterrent; no country can afford to lose its 290 largest cities. (290 nukes isn't 290 cities, of course, still, the point is visually fair enough.).

@Tsusday
@Tsusday 15 дней назад
@@jamiebrooks3864 "I've been told" yeah that's what I thought. You didn't bother to read about actual history, France held longer than Poland. Yet you don't see people meming about white flag Poland. French officers didn't think Germany would invade the Netherlands or Belgium (Kaiser residing in the Netherlands as well as most old German veterans). It really didn't make any sense initially. German blitzkrieg empowered that breach, that by the times French knew of the Benelux invasion, panzers were already inside France. Free France left the main continent with literally 60% of the navy. They then sunk Petain's remaining navy that didn't want to fight Germany. This weakened a lot Germany's sea lion possibilities. More than half of the French army didn't surrender and fought all war long. Want to remind us why the UK didn't want to send troops in France on the day of Declaration of war against Germany? And when they did, they failed miserably and nearly got wiped if not for the French troops who stayed behind to cover. their retreat on CIVILIAN FISHING BOATS. What royal navy doing?!! (Ukraine 2023 reference) What made D-Day possible was Japan's attack on the US. The US wasn't planning on joining the war at all, just supplying weapons and goods to the Allies. The Soviet Union invaded Poland with Germany, then when Germany betrayed them, it became convenient to seek help from the Allies. With the lend-lease act, which gave Russia a lot of western equipment, from trucks to tanks, boots, planes and fuel. Germany's blunder was to not invade the UK and bomb their cities instead of airfields. Otherwise we'd all be Germans now. France historically is the country with the most recorded victories out of any other standing country. Losing only a few wars in the 1700-1800's as per modern times. It also won the WW1. You literally don't know anything about WW2 except meme propaganda. France was fighting all over Africa. And your bit about the resistance is hilarious. Britain chuted equipment and sabotaged some infrastructure. But the French Resistance was the most effective resistance inside Europe. Even the Polish uprising wasn't as damaging to the German command.

@baronvonwolf1457
@baronvonwolf1457 Месяц назад
To be fair to Macron this is not entirely unprecedented. Russia and it's allies often sent their own troops and pilots into western theatres of war throughout the Cold War, more infamously probably Korea and to a lesser extent Vietnam as examples. In Korea of course China put together a whole "volunteer" army to crush the American led UN force and the Soviets let their own pilots fly against American ones. Then in Vietnam they allowed their troops to man SAM missles. I'm not saying it is a riskless strategy (it did make the US contemplate nukes in Korea), but assuming Putin isn't insane (which he doesn't appear to be) having Western troops guard the rear and free up Ukrainian air and land assets while protecting civil and strategic resouces could be completely reasonable.

I am an American, and I have a very limited perspective on European affairs. It does not give me the keenest insights. I can only give an outsiders perspective. I like what I have seen of Macron so far. He seems deeply patriotic and pro-European. A strong Europe is good for the world. The more united Europe is, the less it will need the United States for security and the better prepared it can become to counter Russia. I do hope some of the bashing each other online stops between Americans and Europeans. We have many grievances at times, but I do think the past has shown when we work together we have accomplished great things. Hopefully a century from now Russia has become a democracy and a shining light to the world. The greatest of enemies can become the greatest of friends. Look at the United States and Japan. There is always hope. Hopefully collectively we see that Ukraine needs true allies that are willing to risk more than money for them, or if nothing else… make Putin account for this possibility.

There is simply no requirement for an armed response. NATO might be the bulwark, but there is absolutely no requirement in the treaty to go to war to defend any other NATO country ... we might ponder that fact and consider who is reliable and who is not.

This is so they maintain relations with all sides. This can be done, another version of this was the early reports early on in the war that Putin was dieing or crazy. That is the Mad Man strategy of Nixon, creaty the idea in your oponent that you are not a rational actor, making it more cautious. Putin is perfectly fine, but the constant saber rattling keeps Europe always wondering if Ukraine can have X, Y or Z equipment. Just say fuck it, and Russia will come to the table, we probably cant win Donbas or Crimea, but we can make the war unbelivably expensive, the first year was mostly stocks Russia has but they are almost going to 10% of GDP in defense, its getting expensive, and it will keep rising, we need to give Ukraine the means to increase economic pain, loosing Air planes would be very expensive, attacking infrastructure in Russia would too be very expensive.

My thoughts on Macron is that when the west had their emergency meeting in February, everyone sat at the table staring at the US and asked "well are we in this or not.". I think the US basically said "we will eventually get back to supporting Ukraine but unfortunately we have some internal politics that have to play out, there's no way around it. However, in the meantime, we need someone to be the asshole publicly in order to keep hope alive for Ukraine and to keep Russia on its toes. We need someone to say what we really want to say but will vehemently deny." The US and Britain couldn't do it because for them to say these things would be taken too seriously by Russia and would be too escalatory. Germany is too dependant on Russian gas and therefore to passive aggressive to do it and wouldnt be taken seriously enough. However Macron kinda hits the sweet spot in that he has a bit of a working relationship with Putin but doesn't necessarily speak for all of NATO. I mean he literally came out of that February meeting blasting and everyone in NATO immediately denied it. I find it hard to believe that wasn't planned behind closed doors. Of course, 4 months later, the US has worked out it's political issues, the weapons are flowing in now from basically everyone and many countries are starting to take the kids gloves off including the US. Let's just hope it continues, that nato is willing to back up Macrons tough guy talk, and that it isn't too late for Ukraine to shift the momentum.

Thank you for this excellent conversation MotorInc! This is very relevant in the current landscape in our country. Ideally, we'd have everything, well educated and trained drivers and riders, cars with excellent crash structures and safety features, active safety tech that prevent crashes and also infrastructure that prevents accidents (rain covered pot holes during monsoon for example). This would mean that cars are more expensive and inaccessible to the majority of the population, which then decreases safety because the worst car on the safety scale is still safer than a two wheeler. I strongly believe that a lot of accidents can be prevented if our country's driver's license norms are strongly regulated (or in some cities the presence of a test in the first place 🤦🏻‍♂️)! The problem of safety has to be addressed at the root, which Maruti Suzuki are actively doing. But then again, I agree with Shumi, people are always going to take the easy route which means that the easy route must be blocked and obtaining a driver's license must be a harder ordeal (not bureaucratic roadblocks of course).

This doesn't reflect or address the sending troops as a coalition of the willing rather than "All of NATO", there are several countries including France, Poland, Baltic States, Sweeden, Finland, and others are moving closer to putting training troops in Ukraine, then maintaining crews, then border troops along Belarus, airforces, then perhaps further - each escalation climbing with Russia's successes or harrowing war crimes (even more than we see now). This is not NATO as much as it is part/most of Europe. I even double-checked Macron's statements and they continue to affirm Macron isn't speaking on behalf of NATO policy, but that of France and other countries (mentioned above). As detailed as this video is, it is disappointing this was left out.

Problem with the "coalition of the willing" is that all of the NATO nations who attack Russia outside of their own borders (e.g., Russia hasn't invaded Estonia first) give up the right to demand NATO alliance action when Russia hits their countries directly. Macron aimed to level with Putin face-to-face where other leaders avoided him (reasonably), and Putin made Macron look naive before France's allies. While I am sure his motivations are many, I think his figuratively throwing the gloves off and rolling up his sleeves derives from his sense of wounded integrity; say anything for the French, throughout their cultural history includes an obsession with chivalric honor.

Thank you for knocking on wood when saying that China hasn’t invaded Taiwan.

And if china invades Taiwan, so what, should NATO join the fight against china? Cause Taiwan aren't part of NATO, so if china attacks Taiwan, only nation that will do anything is the US. But the US will cry to NATO and ask for help, because the US are pussies that cant wage war alone

The part that’s starting to get annoying is that France does a lot of posturing, Poland does a lot of posturing. There is absolutely nothing stopping them declaring war on Russia and getting heavily involved. However they both just sit back and talk tough knowing that as long as they don’t attack they don’t have to back it up and if they get attacked the whole of nato and by extension the British commonwealth will become involved.

starting to think that Crimea 2014 was 1938 ..... the small spark. There was just recently a report about France sending instructors to train Ukrainians in Ukraine - like within the last 24hours.

It's not the destination, it's the journey. The lead up to the tipping point is just as important as the tipping point. This comparison is like if your highschool world history class basically said "yeah, people didn't like colonial powers drawing arbitrary lines, and then WW1 happened" or "yeah, cuz WW1 happened, WW2 happened". Which sadly is a real possibility, but at least admit your education system failed you.

@@omniinvestments7128 Literally? Most wars can be easily summarized, that doesn't mean the actions of the people in charge of the lead up can be similarly reduced.
