Jamil, Poor Barry knew he had little chance to win a playoff game, let alone winning the SB. He lost his motivation and it was the right time that he left football. As for LeBron, I wouldn't want him to be playing for my city. He is a steroid athlete and he unilaterally called himself the GOAT of basketball. If we can manipulate time, LJ is to go against a prime Wilt or Russell, his scoring will be reduced at least 50%. Because he won't be able to muscle in and score easy layup and dunks. Seriously, he shouldn't be inside the alltime top 5, maybe top 10.

The problem with the Lions was their head coach. When Washington beat them 41-0 in the regular season and 45-10 in the NFC title game, they should have fired Fontes then. Barry was better than Smith. Our WRs, Perriman, Morton and Moore were just as good as Dallas WRs Erik Kramer was as good as the overrated Aikman was Our O line was good enough to win The biggest difference was Jimmy Johnson versus Wayne Fontes A competent coach wins with the talent they had After Kramer left, they foolishly went after Scott Mitchell and that hurt the team

Ever. Not 25 years. Ever. Barry Sanders was the greatest running back to ever take a handoff. Period. His records are ridiculous. 5 yards a carry for his CAREER under THAT dog shit line. All-time record for most consecutive 1,500+ rushing yard seasons with 6 straight. 2,000+ yards in 97 as the MVP.. He was untouchable. He’s so much better than Emmitt Smith it’s not even funny. Emmitt had possibly THEE best line in NFL history while sanders had the WORST without debate. And still had 5 yards a carry his entire career. He’s the undisputed goat. If Barry Sanders and Emmitt Smith swapped lines or teams, we wouldn’t ever even be having this discussion at all. He’d have damn near 20,000 yards.

Emmitt Smith is by far the best RB ever. NFL records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, playoff TDs and playoff yards. He could run around defender's and run over them. He was a threat out of the backfield as a receiver and he was great in pass protection. Barry could only juke defender's. Oh, Barry does have one NFL record though. Most NEGATIVE rushing yards. That means he LOST more yards than any player in NFL history. Nuff said. Emmitt is the GOAT.

One of the first games Barry played, the opposing team complained that his suit had some kind of silicone slippery spray on his suit. That is a real compliment. And other teams would joke enjoying playing against the Lions so they could watch Barry run. It was fun watch him play. He would lose 5-10 yards then break one for 40-50 yards. But it was sad because owner Ford got very little support for him on the line. I have never seen anyone have "all of the right moves" like Mr. Sanders.

Barry played 89 to 98. The lions made the playoffs 5 times during that time, 4 of which were wildcard 1 and outs. The boys won the Superbowl 3 times during that time. Lets not pretend the lions were a particularly good team, or had a good line. Barry is also the leader in yards lost for a running back because he had to keep running like a madman to make up for the aggressive mediocrity that was blocking for him. If you swapped them Barry is more of a legend and Emmett is remembered as a good running back on a crummy team. End of story.

Jim Johnson Mike Utley and Eric Andolsek were paralyzed and killed within a year of each other. Both offensive lineman were 25 and just hitting their primes. Lomas Brown was our only stud lineman. He’s only 20% of the puzzle. The Lions has the works of a great offensive line but it was crushed. But they never had a QB so the odds of them winning a SB would still be really slim even with a great O-line.
@ryanr20091
@ryanr20091 4 года назад
@Joel Johnson Saying Barry's was better then Emmitt is like saying Randy Moss was better then Jerry Rice. You people just like flash over longevity and proven winners. Also the lions had two of the best o lineman in the game in the 90's. Kevin Glover and Lomas Brown. So the Barry o line excuse is b.s. Barry didn't run with discipline. He would frequently juke himself right into negative yardage runs and was a liability on the goal line. His style was more exciting to watch but, not as effective as Emmitt's. Emmitt was a complete back. The only reason the lions never won anything is because of qb play. There offense, defense, and special teams were as good as anyone in the 90's. They just chose to have bums for qbs that threw incompletions and picks. Even if Barry played for dallas it doesn't mean it would change anything. He still would have stalled drives and left aikman to pick up longer 3rd downs. Which as good as aikman was he only threw for more then 20 tds one season in his career. So they probably wouldn't have been as good if aikman had to make more plays. Emmitt would always pick up 3 to 4 yards minimum so 3rd down would be short and the defense would have to guess is it run or pass. With Barry it was either break a long run or be left with a 3rd and obvious passing situation. Which is why they never won a superbowl.

Some of you guys talent evaluation of a running back come strictly on open field explosiveness. You are missing so much more to being a great back. Finding holes and gaining 3 -4 yards is not flashy, but it is effective. I don't know exactly how he concludes this, but the matter was always 50/50 at best. And quite frankly, Emmitt Smith had one of the greatest offensive lines probably EVER while Barry Sanders, meanwhile, was stuck with the mediocre line that one just has to expect from the Lions' organization. I've always said, put Barry Sanders on one of those '90s Cowboys teams and a 2,500 yard rushing season would not have been out of the question. And to anyone too young to remember watching this guy who thinks I'm exaggerating, TRUST ME, he could run like no running back you've ever seen. It was just amazing.

@Methadone4Life
@Methadone4Life 6 лет назад
Both were great backs and blaming Emmitt for having a great offensive line is just BS. Two different runners. If you are looking for the breakaway threat then Barry was obviously better with higher top end speed, if you want a guy you can hand the ball to 30 times and no matter how much they stack the box he will get you 4 yards, win games and take you to titles...only one Emmitt Smith. I take Emmitt anytime and that is no slight to Barry, who was a beast and a fun back to watch. However, he was bottled up at times in playoff games with games like the day when Sanders set an NFL postseason record for rushing futility. He had 13 carries for minus-one yard. He had four catches that day -- for four yards. Which means he had 16 touches for a total of three yards -- 2.7 yards less than he averaged per rush in the regular season. That is the difference, if you give Emmitt the ball 20 times he will get you at least 70 yards because he is a north/south runner, he puts the head down and gets the tough yards. Now, that is not to say that Emmitt did not have moves and could not break long runs nor that Barry was not a tough player, just that they are two different style backs. You would be happy with either, but if I want a back that can CARRY a team past tough defenses and get the important smashmouth yards that win championships...no doubt I'm going with duece/duece. Barry was one helluva back and fun as hell to watch and could break ankles. Both all time greats and the debate will go on, along with many other backs that should be in the conversation. I tell ya, not many backs would I take over Emmitt.

just watching this just shows you how much better barry is. when emmit runs, there is plenty of room to run and he runs straight and gets pushed out of bounds. when barry runs he breaks like 5 tackles everytime. hands down barry is the best RB ever and its not even close with emmit
@kellengonda1863

A good running back is not only the one who breaks tackles or jukes a lot of people. In that Barry is the GOAT. But the complete back wait for the right hole, blocks, catch passes, breaks tackles, play all downs, that is Emmitt.

Well Walter is the GOAT, we cant compare Walter to Barry or Emmitt, just saying that i think Emmitt was more of a complete back than Barry

Xiucoatl I would have to disagree. Barry set a bunch of all purpose yard records, and was a better pass catcher in my opinion. I respect your's though.

I don't know if it's true or not or remember where I heard it, but a long time ago someone explained a stat to me that Barry Sanders consistently was touched by defenders 5 +\- yards before Emmitt was, on average, per run. Lot's of factors I know, but it was no secret for the majority of those years Emmitt had the better O line for blocking. Even still, Emmitt would have been a beast if he played with the Lions too, but Barry was a human highlight real, and the freakiest of freaks for his physical and mental agility. Wish he had the chance to play on a Superbowl team.

In watching this game, Barry wasn't breaking tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He had a lot of room to run. He beat Emmit by only 2 yards with 4 more carries. I love both backs, but there are a lot of Emmit haters that use his offensive line as an excuse for his greatness. He's been a great back since high school.

It's funny reading this stuff. As a Dallas fan, I can tell you that 3 out of the 5 starters on the o-line for Super Bowl 27 were there in the late 80's.....and they couldn't do anything (and the team went 1-15). The first thing Dallas's management told Jerry Jones about Nate Newton was "Don't waste another minute on him." But everything Emmitt did was because of his line. (Right.)

Barry was the best runner in history. Emmitt was an amazing back tough, durable, can block and catch but what Barry did in Detroit was unbelievable. Detroit sucked. They had some players who had pro bowl years but as a unit they sucked. Everyone knew he was getting the ball 8 in the box each game and he made everyone look stupid and this was the height of the steroid era. Simply the best ever!

I remember watching that game. It was week 3 of the 1994 season. It was a match up of two of the greatest running backs of all time. B Sanders & E Smith. Sanders carried the ball 40 times for 194 yards at 4.85 pr carry. E Smith had 29 carries for 143 yards at 4.93 pr carry. Emmitt also had 7 receptions for 49 yards for an all purpose yardage of 192. It’s amazing to me that a running back with nearly 200 yards rushing in a game from 40 carries doesn’t score a single TD but that’s what happened with Barry Sanders in that amazing game. Unfortunately for my Cowboys, my team lost 20-17 in OT. You would think that with two Hall of Fame running backs amassing 337 rushing yards and 376 all purpose yards that the combined score would be far higher than just 37. Both teams defenses were bend but don’t break in that game. From what I can remember it was a defensive play from a Detroit player that won the game in OT with a sack and fumble on Troy Aikman that set them up in field goal range. What frustrates me about that play is that E Smith was having such a good game that I questioned why they would pass it when Emmitt was running all over that defense. SMH. But nonetheless, it was quite a treat to watch two of the greatest running backs play on the same field.

LMAO! I don't see anyone comparing Zeke to Emmitt except you. Barry was a quitter and an awful goalline back. Emmitt is the most complete back to ever play. And I love the fact that today people just pretend like the Cowboys bulldozed everybody they played on their way to the Superbowls. Because the truth is that they didn't. Emmitt played against the Giants with a separated shoulder just to win the division on the last game of the season. The Cowboys were just good at winning close games thanks to Emmitt.

I’ll take Emmitt every day of the week. Emmitt never ran for negative yards and he proved he could come to work everyday year after year. Emmitt is the greatest running back of all times hands down and there’s no way anyone can argue against it. He holds the record that says so.

Lomas Brown was the only O-lineman above average. There were some good receivers apart from Moore (Moore was not their for Sanders whole career) as well. They had horrible QB play Barry's entire career except for Scott Mitchell's first season. Barry was always the focal point of the opposing defense. To suggest that Smith is as good as Sanders is ridiculous They did it all the time, they used to include Thurman Thomas in the discussion as well. I never met anyone in person even Cowboys fans that thought Smith was better it would be the same as saying I know nothing about football.

Barry is the highlight and Emmitt is the football player. Smith held out in the 93 season and the team started 0-2 without him. He came back and they went on to become the first team to begin the season 0-2 and win the Super Bowl. To cap off the season they needed a win to clinch home field advantage on the road against the Giants. Emmitt suffered a separated shoulder in the game. He gutted it out and carried the Cowboys to the victory. One of the most legendary performances in NFL history. Barry’s a distant second...
