Some backstory: In 1975, The Whites played a Washington, D.C. show with Emmylou Harris. That association led to them providing background vocals on Harris’ Blue Kentucky Girl (1979), Light of the Stable (1979) and Roses in the Snow (1980) albums. Emmylou also took The Whites on tour with her Hot Band. “She just opened so many doors for us and put us in front of people who had never seen us before,” Sharon told interviewer Paul Edward Joyce. “We just had a great relationship and will forever be grateful to her for how she helped us.”
Live in Chicago, 1978.

Ohhh. Saw Emmy in 2008? 2009? Here in Boise Idaho at the Egyptian Theater, 3 Gals and a Buddy. And she sang all my favorites from this Album. Quarter Moon on a Ten Cent Town. I samg along and cried. It was as if thst Concert was for me. She had sung the sound track of my life almost 46 years.

I love Emmylou Harris saw her in 1976 at the Long Beach banjo and fiddle festival, where Linda Ronstadt told the promoters that she wouldn’t play the festival, if she couldn’t have Emmylou Harris on the bill also, Emmylou was there promoting her debut album with her Hot Band with James Burton on guitar and of course she was amazing and so was Linda Ronstadt

We knew this great band in the Seventies as Buck White and The Down Home Folks - they later turned into the Whites and love was coming into the picture as Ricky Skaggs - occasional sideman for Buck White and the Downhome Folks (not Down Home Gang) fell in love with Sharon. Next thing we know Ricky is on the Roses In The Snow album with the Whites but also another side man from Buck; the fabulous Tony Rice. (God rest his lovely soul) and Jerry Douglas. All this could be seen in bloom at the annual Kerrville Bluegrass Festival held every Labor Day weekend in Kerrville, Texas. Little did we know that so many things were starting to come together (1975 - 1979). I managed to visit with Ricky summer of 2019 and we reminisced about all that was emerging on that stage in Kerrville. Thank God for Buck White, proud son of Oklahoma and Abilene, Texas as he emerged with his version of Texas Swing but with a bluegrass flair. He was the North Star for all of these great people who converged in the late 70's.

Yes. She has a phrase and delivery sensitivity in the genre shared by very few beyond Allison Krauss, Merle Haggard, Jim Reeves, Nanci Griffith, Patsy Cline, John Denver... Others of course- Joel, Ann Wilson, Vince Gill - stand out, but Emmylou’s quality and expressiveness is, like the others, the cream that rises above judgement. So few ‘popular’ artists have that talent. Probably because “practicing more” just can’t get anyone to this level no matter their skill.

In 1978 I was listening to Led Zepplin, The Stones, AC/DC, but in the middle of that rock n roll there was Emmylou and the Hot Band. Emmylou, Ricky, and Jerry all on the same stage at the same! Buck White and the Down Home Folks with Jerry Douglas and Ricky Skaggs stopped in our little out of the way town and played a little hole in the wall club. At that time I did not know who Ricky Skaggs or Jerry Douglas or the White sisters were. They played like it was a famous venue. I was with a husband and wife with whom I had been playing bass and we spoke with the Whites. They were as you might expect very welcoming. As years have gone by I did come to know about Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, and the Whites had just started working with Emmy Lou Harris on her albums. It was a lovely evening.

This venue, I believe, is the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. In 77 and 78, we saw REO and local favorite Shadows of Knight there but the big surprise was an L.A. band called Van Halen. Aragon and The Quiet Knight were amazing halls to hear great music between 1970 and 1980. Aragon was a tad dangerous for lilly white boys from the suburbs. You could get "your head kicked in" if you didn't keep your eyes down. It was always worth it. My mom saw Tommy Dorsey at the Aragon when she was a "bobby soxer" from Aquinas High School, South Chicago. Aragon Ballroom.

I've been a fan since Elite Hotel and saw Emmylou and the Hotband at the Manchester Free Trade Hall, UK (Maybe around 78) When the band came out, I was shocked not to see Albert Lee but instead this guy with a hat on, smoking a cigarette, (which he would put in the neck of his guitar, while playing) Really disappointed not to see Albert but this stranger who turned out to be Frank Reckard, was phenomenal. What a great show. Seen Emmy a few times since. Someone described her voice being, "as clear as a mountain stream" couldn't have got it better and the best band ever.

Yes he is. In the lead break that starts around 11:15 it looks like that double cut has a B bender judging by the way he pushes the neck down slightly at times - and I see a strange knob or button on the bridge right around the B string. I have seen him in other vids using a B bender Tele on this same song. This gotta be a rare guitar.
@Bbendfender
@Bbendfender 3 года назад
@@2wheelsturnin I think it is a B-bender on that LP Jr. I don't know how they did it but Frank was definitely "bending" the neck to get those other full step notes. I also own a Tele B-bender.

This brings back memories! In 1978 I was front row center at a Willie Nelson/Emmylou Harris concert at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. Emmylou was wearing this sparkly turquoise top with big butterfly sleeves. When she waved to the crowd, I saw something I wish I hadn't. That sleeve fell back, exposing a hairy armpit. Up till that moment, she was "perfectly angelic" in my eyes. After that, not so much. This explains why you've never seen her bare legs, only jeans and long skirts meeting high-top boots. Ugh! My heart was broken!

From Robert Oermann's book "Behind the Grand Ole Opry curtain": "We met in 1971," says Sharon. "It was the first summer that Ricky traveled with Ralph Stanley. "I flipped out when I saw her and heard her," recalls Ricky. "I wanted to meet her so bad. Went up and kinda flirted with her a little bit. I was sixteen years old." "We moved to Nashville in September 1971, and I saw him again in October when he came to town for the Country Music Convention," Sharon remembers. "We started working the festivals on the bluegrass circuit. We ran into him a lot then. . . . We just gradually got to be pals during that time. In January 1980, Sharon was divorced from her first husband, banjo player Jack Hicks. Eight months later, Ricky was divorced from his first wife, Barbara, with whom he had two children, Mandy and Andrew. The divorces drew Ricky and Sharon together. "I was hurtin', and she was hurtin'," Ricky recalls. "We started hangin' really close together."
