I noted the time stamps for the basic tune in each mode for anyone like me who might want to compare them side by side! 4:35 Ionian (familiar, safe, happy) 8:00 Dorian (brave, hopeful, secure) 10:34 Phrygian (troubled, uneasy, worried) 13:05 Lydian (magical, silly, whimsical) 15:55 Mixolydian (joyful, carefree, festive) 18:13 Aeolian (lonely, somber, wistful) 21:25 Locrian (creepy, mysterious, spooky)

Thank you Anne. This topic is relatively new for me and your presentation lesson is a helpful introduction to a new window on my music journey. It's very exciting. I still find I'm stuck when trying to improvise but your calm and clear method is very encouraging. I have the work book so I'll continue to listen and practice the arrangements you provide. I'm very grateful for the encouragement and teaching you give us all. 😊

This is so wonderful, Anne! I've known about modes for many years and am even quite familiar with all of their sounds, but your demonstrations are so lovely and really highlight their distinct qualities! It occurs to me that it could be even more interesting to compare how the 7 modes sound all with the same tonic. I just now figured out that this can be done on lever harp by using the 7th scale degree of whatever major key the harp is tuned in as the tonic for all 7 modes. I tune in 3 flats, so in my case, all 7 modes can be played on the tonic of "D." If your harp is tuned in C-major, you could demonstrate all 7 modes on a "B" tonic. I know you said in another video that you really like tuning in 1 flat, so you could play in all 7 modes using a tonic of "E." Of course, when exploring modes using the lever manner, it would make more sense to start with Locrian (or Phrygian if ignoring Locrian) and then add a sharp into the key signature progressively until arriving at Lydian with 5 raised levers per octave, or starting with Lydian and progressively removing a sharp out of the key signature until arriving at Locrian. So many fun possibilities!

Hi Anne, I read your book, "Emoji Modes," and then watched this video. Very helpful! Now I have to practice it and play with it. I'm wondering about "Flight of the Heron." How, or why, did you decide to use Dorian to compose that piece? Just interested in your thought process, or composition process. Thank you.

You had me at your first arrangement of Are you sleeping! Great stuff to learn and improvise... (You didn’t quite do justice to the Phrygian mode though, you skipped its chords entirely!). Were you generally playing 5 string-chords with your left hand? Could you explain how to do that in a video? Thank you!

Thanks so much for watching! Interesting how the unsettled mood of Phrygian can come across effectively with a very simple E minor and D minor chord progression (plus an occasional F Major). Thanks very much for the video you sound amazing and it has helped me as a guitar player. The only thing I’m still unsure of is the changes required to the chord progressions. From the first C Ionian mode I believe you played a 1,6,4,5 chord progression from the Key of C. Is there a simple adjustment to the progression when playing the other modes. For instance with the next more D Dorian would that become a 2,7,5,6 chord progression etc or is there something else? Thanks very much
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic 3 года назад
Thanks for watching, glad it was helpful. The Emoji Modes workbook goes a little deeper into chord combinations that work well to capture the flavour of each mode.
@LohPro
@LohPro Год назад
the chord numberings are changed in relation to the mode. so where C-a-F-G is I - vi - IV - V in C Ionian, in D dorian they would be VII - v - III - IV. So, same chords, but labeled differently in relation to the new root of D. This same set of chords in E phrygian would then be labeled VI - iv - II - III, etc.

Dear Anne, first of all thank you for your beautiful music and videos, they are very inspirational! I have just purchased your two books "Emoji Modes" and "Chord Town". There are many funny and exciting ideas how to explore and get creative with music. But still for me two questions remain and I was hoping you could answer them for me. Concerning the chords: I don't understand, why one cannot move from every chord to every other chord. I get it that some chord progressions create more tension then others, but the map you show in your book gives me the impression, that some chord progressions aren't allowed or even wrong. Could you explain that to me? And now concerning the modes: You give a suggestion for 4 chords fitting each mode. Where do these choises come from? Are the other chords "wrong"? Or is it simply that those 4 chords bring out the charakter of the mode most accurately? Many greetings from Germany, Theresa
@annecrosbygaudetmusic
@annecrosbygaudetmusic 5 лет назад
Hi Resa, so glad you are digging into your new resources! Chord Town and Emoji Modes are for people who are just getting started with chords and modes. The patterns that I suggest are ones that tend to work well to set you up for success. The I-IV-V-I for example, is a common progression that is good to know because it works, but it doesn't mean that other progressions are wrong. IV likes to go to V, but that doesn't mean it can't go somewhere else. Learn what works first and then start exploring as you dive deeper. Same with the modes, I limit the chords to the ones that will give you the greatest success at creating each character. After you've got that it's time to explore. Hope that helps! Have fun with it. - Anne

@@annecrosbygaudetmusic I have to sort out the format I would have bought it immediately if you sent the printed version, but I need to be able to print it off I can’t work off screen. Just getting hubby sorted 🤣🤣🤣also unbound work is a pain, then there is how do I bind it so it opens and sits well on the stand without tracking down a print shop to do a one off. I have problems with my hands. I had to stop playing for six years due to illness and now playing 6 months. Modes interest me as I have Central Nervous system issue. I am so sensitive to pitch it can have an awful affect. Recently cat jumped off Camac Isolde 38 throwing it to the floor on its sound box. The luthier and I decided to see how it went over time. With levers engaged it was losing the semitone even leap a whole note right thru the Harp. It is off being investigated. But as it was going it had a strong affect on me and left me feeling awful after playing. That which can heal can harm. I didn’t want to go near it. And my real harp is still being built. Camac Mademoiselle 40 I need big to sit at, round soundboard for sound and not cause pain, longest strings I can afford and soft folk gut strings to get maximum tone quality to my problem I love Dusty Strings harps and have had many. Pain tension head pain can be self administered on the right harp.
