The movie gives a brief but accurate depiction about Maximilian's relationship with his children. He had a very good and loving father-daughter relationship with Margaret, which was an exceptionally affectionate one for the era (when royal parent-child relationships were usually very formal and having daughters had a low value), it rather resembled the father-daughter relationships of our modern days than what was usual in their time. Margaret was a person who was easy to love, with her charm, wit, kindness and intelligence, and Maximilian loved and respected her. She was an advisor to him, both politically and personally, and he valued her advice and loved to spend time with her whenever they were together. With Philip, his relationship was much more complicated. It had a tough start very early on when Maximilian was regent for him in Flanders (after Mary of Burgundy died when Philip was only 4), but in Philip's early teenage years a big noble fraction already wanted Maximilian out of the regency and Philip to assume his rule. The conflict was solved by Philip taking his duties in Flanders but it didn't ease the relations between father and son for the years to come. Philip as ruler of the Low Countries and Maximilian as Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of Austria often disagreed politically and had different interests, e.g. when it came to the French who Max disliked and Philip liked very much.

If Maria de Burgundy had never died, do you think that philip would have been different as a person? as education and thoughts as the enemies of the holy Roman empire and Burgundy.
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 4 года назад
Surely. Being a ruler from such a young age usually twists people's personalities and rarely makes them learn humility and respect. Also, with Mary alive till Philip's adult years, there would have never been a regency conflict between Maximilian and the nobles who put young Philip on the lead in the end

@@ASTERv9797 I believe he cared about Juana. He had both political and personal dimensions, and when it came to his family, they tended to mix. But he did care. He admired people who were beautiful or intellectual, and she was both . Thay also had shared expeirences. He was once imprisoned by Bruges and if his father Frederick III had allowed it like Ferdinand, they would give him the "crazy" label too. They could not kill him (he was the emperor's son, their natural lord's father, and the hero of Guinegate too), they could not brand him a criminal, so that was the only way. Max said he could not forget that kind of treatment so he did not want to come back, but this time he would for the sake of Philipp and Juana. He told diplomats that she was not crazy, just depressive and things would get better (he had heavy depression too). He tried to help her present herself as a credible queen. He told Philipp that husband and wife must be one and the same, if one wanted succcess as a ruler. He could not do anything once she was in Castille though. Certainly he still loved his own son more. And even though Juana brought a huge dowry too, one could not replace Mary of Burgundy's importance to him. You can see that in the ways they were presented in artworks he commissioned/orchestrated too.

@@di3486 lame excuse! After Philip died, Juana always had a chance to recover and move on, which Ferdinand denied her of such a thing. Philip was no longer around to use or manipulate her, so what was his excuse then? even if he couldn't let Juana to rule Castile and his kingdom, still he didn't have to do such a thing to her, she wouldn't have been the first monarch that's busy with other things outside of her kingdom while there's a regent, for some time until she gains power to. so why did Ferdinand need to send his own daughter in eternity of hell? Maria Eleanora, queen of Sweden was also obsessed with her husband and kept his corpse near herself for two years. eventually they managed to remove the corpse and burry him and locked her up until she recovers, which she did and then was freed. and those people were not even Maria Eleanora's family! while Juana's supposedly loved flesh and blood couldn't show such a mercy! how horrible

Maybe the essential purpose was the same (dynastic ambitions etc), but Maximilian was the kind who wanted good partnership and tried to work out a win-win situation for both sides. Joanna acted like a calm, wise queen during the time she spent with him - he must be a man whose presence inspired trust and confidence. Maybe he was not a perfect husband to Maria Bianca (obviously still idolizing the first wife after all these years) but at least he left her alone with her own court (and no, he did not use her as security for his debts either) and did not try to make her life more miserable. Philip and Ferdinand of Aragon on the other hand were the people who could not be trusted. Machiavelli gave a sympathetic account of Max as a person and he was a good judge of character.

@Arcadius2207 - in my opinion, Maximilian left a disastrous legacy to Charles with whom the latter had to struggle all his life. Firstly, Maximilian lost the Duchy of Milan, which was in a sort of vassalage to the Empire, by not supporting swiftly and properly the Duke Ludovico Sforza il Moro when Louis XII attacked him. Secondly, when Maximilian planned to travel to Rome for his coronation as Emperor, he decided “hey, instead of crossing through Trentino which is part of my territories, why not cross the borders of the Republic of Venice and get their lands? What can ever those gondoliers do to me?” Sure enough Maximilian suffered the most humiliating defeat by the hands of the Venetians, losing part of his lands in Italy to them and until he died he never managed to go to Rome anymore, so technically he was never crowned Emperor and that meant that Charles had to use every resource he had to outsmart Francis in 1519 to become Emperor of the HRI, leading to the lifelong feud between the two monarchs. Thirdly, Maximilian engaged again against Venice in a disastrous 8-year-war: after a successful initial coalition with France, Spain, the Pope, Mantua, Ferrara and Hungary (The League of Cambrai) to destroy the Republic, against all odds Venice managed to win by putting their enemies one against each other, so at a certain point Maximilian was in war against Ferdinand himself. This war had been so long and at a certain stage so pointless but economically damaging that the first thing Charles did as King of Castile and Aragon after Ferdinand’s death was to negotiate the peace with Francis, against his grandfather’s advice -the Peace of Noyon in 1516. So yeah, to his grandson Maximilian left him nothing but pains in the neck.
