uh hello?? the audience score is just as manipulatable as the critic score. Critics do not just live in a bubble, they are also prone to allowing outside influences changing their opinion. For all intents and purposes the critic score and the audience score are essentially the same thing, but have been arbitrarily divided based on who does it as a profession. Not all critics are equal or thoughtfully considered people, just as the "general audience" are not all sheep with the exact same opinion.

I believe the divide between audience and critics is audiences appreciate a film for what it is while a Critic wants to appreciate a film for being what they want. So should you judge a film by what it's trying to be or what you want it to be? I think critiquing the SMB movie for not having a super enthralling or subversive story is like critiquing an action comedy for not being a dramatic horror film. The film was designed to be entertaining, funny, action packed, and pretty now the funny part is questionable since it's Illumination humor but it has great action set pieces with an at least passable story. Also Peach is hot so 6.5/10

Has Emplemon always sounded this depressed?

The point of the obstacle course was for Mario to prove he can tag-a-long with a trained warrior like Peach, otherwise he'd have to stay behind while she'd keep his brother in mind but probably not a huge priority like Mario would. And Peach wanting Mario around was due to him being the first other human she's ever seen in her life, that's why he got a shot with the course at all. She had herself as a model of what a human is capable of, I guess. My biggest gripe with the movie was Luigi being in jail for the whole movie but getting the power-up and fighting alongside Mario in the end as equals. I thought Luigi would have had a cool subplot in the spooky mansion where he overcomes his own securities and, maybe, convince King Boo and his kingdom to take the fight to Bowser in the end. I don't know, maybe that hypothetical arc sounds better on paper. Puss 2 was way better but they're all just kid's movies.

I hope Mr. Lemon appears on Is It Kino? more often.

So a mediocre and safe movie in the eyes of Emplemon is a 2/10? Forgive me if I’m little Nintendo bias here, (especially knowing Nintendo making a-‘nother’ Mario movie was risky on its own), but I would watch a safe movie that’s hits most of the notes albeit with some criticism, rather than a movie that takes risk, squanders it all, and makes you angry in the end. I’ll take the Mario movie over any modern movie made by Rian Johnson any day!

all this film needed to be was a simple straight forward adventure akin to "Popeye the sailor meets Sinbad the sailor". Mario and Luigi find themselves in the mushroom kingdom after warp pipe shenanigans, learn of the plight of the toad people after peach was kidnapped, and then they're thrusted into an adventure to save her. its classic fairy tale story structure. the fact that it just defaults on being a glorified advertisement is criminal. the 1990s Mario Bros film is better than this for daring to do something more than just an adventure in advertising, and more than that, there are countless newgrounds fanimations which have done a better job of adapting mario and company to animation. florian's dedicated insistance that this film was any good is a monument to his consumerist nature. he has no taste of his own, he follows the herd's mentality.

Imagine in 2023 after a decade of capeshit being the only thing that constitutes "safe" and the industry has gone to hell due to taking too many insane risks on nonsense that Mario being "safe" is somehow a bad thing when it's half the reason it feels like a breath of fresh air. I held this on par with the Hoskins film when I first saw it, but I'm leaning towards Emp's position. Brilliant set design and higher stakes action doesn't save this from being the worst of the three Mario films (even the OVA makes the brothers more interesting characters). All changes to canon only served to make it more generic. Peaches, by Tenacious D standards, is musical AIDS, and Super Princess Peach was the worst game they could have adapted.
