Nostalgia Critic's Kickassia - Is it kino?

The migration of movie review content off youtube in the early 2010's occurred due to the litigation of Viacom sueing RU-vid for copyright infringement, this lead to the current DMCA takedown system and those review channels were easy and frequent targets of that sort of thing. The onky two options were to leave RU-vid or form a multi channel network with a legal department to fight the DMCA notices.

Yes. It is. Spoony and doug kill in this movie. Their swag level is off the charts and they proved to the world they have leading man chops.

Kickassia seems to be the one everyone has real nostalgia for. Don't get me wrong, it's technically atrocious, overacted, and the plot is anorexically thin, but it's easily the most harmless and watchable of any of the Channel Awesome movies. As big as the cast is, there's still novelty seeing everybody acting together, before all the backstabbing and ego tripping. There ARE two or three legit funny lines sprinkled in there somewhere. Besides the Sarah Palin parody and a few references to joke characters from Nostalgia Critic reviews, it doesn't require that much prior film knowledge to understand. It's also only 90 minutes, so it doesn't ask too much of the viewer. Kickassia is a product of its time that aged like milk, and that's okay.

When Eggy says he looked like "Jew Warrior", I just picture him as Samson slaughtering Philistines.

I was a big TGWTG fan back in the day, watched most of the people on the site, and the appeal for me in these movies was just seeing them all together having fun. The movies aren't great, but they were all made in like a weekend or at a convention so to me they have the same energy as those 2 day film contests you like to do.

I can understand why you didn't have Nostalgia Bigs on this episode, he'd be liable to go Melvin and pull out his iconic gun on the other guests.

Each film is longer and harder to get through than the previous one, although Mumkey may like Suburban Knights due to its Richalvarez-esque vibes.

45:00 You're almost dead-on with that speculation. Doug Walker is heavily influenced by Looney Tunes and Animaniacs. He makes no secret about this. Daffy Duck in-particular was a big inspiration for the Critic as a character. Kickassia is one of the projects where it's most obvious. You have him dodging bullets while making Daffy Duck noises in one scene, there's a part where he's walking away from Kevin Bah and says "Why do they always want to do it the hard way?" while the camera fades to black which feels feels very Looney Tunes-esque (I think it's a reference to a specific short but I forget which), and some of the slapstick also has that vibe.

I am a stauch believer in the Ellis/Spoony theory. There's simply just too much that lines up for it not to be real.

The Fred movie is unironically kino, it’s basically joker for children

I was actually the target audience at the time it came out and the speculation of what this was like at the time is hit and miss. "A lot of big creators:" tbh most of these people weren't well-known even at the time. It was mostly Doug, Spoony, and Linkara. Angry Joe was always one of the bigger ones but he reviews modern mainstream games so I felt like there was never a lot of overlap with his fans and Channel Awesome fans, they're just different kinds of media. I think a lot of the participants hoped events like these would help get their names out there and that's why later movies give side characters more focus. "This would be better in 10 minute installments" Actually it was originally released in parts, so maybe it really was meant to be seen that way.

I watch Kickassia every year. For the last few years, I've subjected my friends to being made to watch the anniversary films on my birthday. Of course, alcohol is involved.

Growing up as a Gen Z is hard. I’m a senior in high school 17 about to turn 18 in a couple of months and throughout my life I’ve noticed a steady shift in how everyone at my school viewed the world. Most people in middle school and my early years of high school were pretty welcoming. It wasn’t hard to find a friend group and at the very start of the technological shift we didn’t really have too much addiction to social media. Kids mostly didn’t care about their ego they were just living and trying to set up a good future. Now we don’t even care about the future because we assume everything is screwed from the start. We just go to school to complain about school and head home anxious and stressed tuning into tik tok to waste away for hours as a distraction from life itself. It’s honestly sad to see how cynical everyone has become. Nobody around my age even enjoys living. One of my classmates last year committed suicide. It used to be actively addressed in schools and people actually would care about this person in a different age, but 3 days after the news hit there were people mocking his passing, people making jokes about their own disorders saying they were going to be next, and people even saying they saw it coming and told no one. It’s heartbreaking how self absorbed we’ve become.

It was going to be called "The Devil's Jesters" and Tony Goldmark leaked some plot details on the "How Did This NOT Get Made?" podcast a couple years back.

If you guys want some old RU-vid movie kino, I recommend The Ultimate Showdown trilogy by TheClownCrew. Considering Mumkey was a Stupid Mario Brothers fan, I know he'd like those movies.

Supposedly, Doug still had unsold, signed Kickassia posters for years after this "movie". I guess they were liquidated with the rest of Channel Awesome. Someone needs to check my Channel Awesome lore though.

I'd say the most underrated Channel Awesome member is Yomarz. He had potential...

I remember how hilarious the 1-year anniversary special was. Then this came out and I think my love of Channel Awesome began its decay. I had to admit to myself, "This is not funny. Not funny at all."

the most poignant aspect about Kickassia in retrospect is seeing how much culture devolved in just a decade. you can see as much in everything from the memes of the time to the popular culture of the day. Kickassia now stands as a hallmark of a simpler time. Im not calling the film high art, but if you were around for that flick as it was coming out and a fan of TGWTG styled content ontop of that its plain to see what made it enjoyable. It was a roundtable of the internet's biggest nerd entertainers giving this movie thing an honest college try. Its rife with errors and poor writing, mostly unintelligible to casuals, and ugly to look at but thats all just a reflection of the by-gone internet age which yielded the film to begin with. In a sense the Nostalgia Critic trilogy is the 21st century equivalent of silent film. You had to be there to get it and only a niche few remain who can still appreciate it.

This is just a random thought of mine, and I don’t know if this is true or not, but Lindsay Ellis probably was Doug’s girlfriend and that’s why she got the job as the nostalgia chick, and the rape scene in the third film was the result of her break up. God only knows why she stayed for as long as she did.

I agree with Eggy. It was a simpler time when autistis could just run around in costumes. Also, try to find some reviewers who give a shit about what you are doing. I have no idea where that fool got the idea that Kickassia had something to do with Malaysia when the entire plot of the film is the critic trying to invade a micronation called Molassia and a simple Google search of Molassia shows you that its a real place.
