We install our 1st Emporia EV Charger! We unbox it and remove the NEMA 14-50 plug so we can hardwire it. This EV charger will charge all vehicles according to the manufacture. We tested it on my Model 3 Performance and on the homeowners Rivian!
Thank you, Nikita, for recording this install for me as well as being the homeowner!

@@YourFloridaElectrician hello there ! So what size of wire if I use a 60amp breaker For a EV ? Can I use 6/3?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 6 дней назад
You don’t need 6/3. 6/3 is two hots with a neutral and a ground (ground is not counted in wire count) 6/2 is better but it can only be loaded to 44amps continuous. You would need to set you Ev charger to charge at 40amps instead of 48amps. My preference is #6 thhn stranded put inside a pipe. 55 amps continuous so you can at your Ev charger to 48amps. Hope this helps.

I have had my Emporia evse since Mar 2023. It works great . Initially installed as plug in 40 amp . Changed to hardwired 48 amp. It made enough of a difference . It works with no drama, installed outside similar to yours . But in the shady side of house so the Texas sun doesn’t add to the thermal load.

Sounds nice thank you for commenting. The Emporia seems like a decent EV charger. One of the few things I didn’t like was the way the screws for the cover were facing towards the back as far as from an installer‘s point of view. It seems their app is pretty versatile as well, as far as seeing house loads with some of their other devices.

Thanks for the video. I'm going to use 1" flexible conduit with #6 THHN directly wired on a short run into a 60A breaker. Mine is all indoor and I don't need the 48A output (older Chevy Bolt limited to 32A) but I wanted to wire it so that it would still be acceptable for the maximum output capacity of the charger. I bought and installed a NEMA 14-50 originally but I was not comfortable with that connection with this kind of load. A direct connection is safer.

Thanks for doing a full walkthrough. The manual recommended 1 1/4 inch conduit which seemed excessive for two hot 6 gauge wires and a ground wire, so it's good so see how it goes with 3/4 inch flex pvc. My setup will likely be very similar with an outdoor GE panel.

Thank you for this video, its the first Emporia install I have seen. My Emporia is installed with the 14-50 plug. Can I convert it to hardwire by extending the current #6 cable in a junction box and a terminal block? I'm about 3 feet short to get to the charger, or would you suggest pulling new #6?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 8 месяцев назад
If it’s not a long expensive run to replace, I would just pull new wires. My reasoning is every additional connection is another connection that can fail. I can certainly understand if you’re pulling three additional runs of 50 feet or something like that it could get expensive. But if it’s right next to your panel and you’re only buying a total of 18 feet of wire, it shouldn’t break the bank and hopefully will give you a better warm fuzzy feeling when you’re done with the job. Your call, but both ways will work. Thanks for watching and commenting Mr. Anderson!

Awesome, i'm going to try and do this my self ! seems not too bad of an adventure, just don't touch the hot wires. Doing this for my model 3 tesla, would a 50 amp breaker for 40a charging work just fine ?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician Год назад
Be super careful Russel and would be advisable to shut off the main breaker first before start working there. Just to be safe. For 50 amp breaker will only get you 40 A of output. 9.6 kW. It’s a little bit slower than this 60 amp breaker, which will get you 48 A at 11.5 kW. Not too much difference really. Unless you travel a lot and often. With a 50 amp breaker, you can probably get away with the number eight wiring instead of using number six. Which ever you choose work smart and work safe. Thank you for commenting and questioning. How did you end up checking the voltage with the cover in place? Were you able to check it on the end that plugs into the car? Thanks
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 11 месяцев назад
I never did get a chance to check the voltage. As you stated with the cover on, it’s not possible. But she can do is take the amperage off the breaker. Make sure the breaker is working correctly. On the Tesla wall connector you can test the voltage at the connections prior to putting the connector on the wall. If I’m not incorrect, I believe these EV chargers for the home only supply AC voltage and exchange the DC at the car. The superchargers, however, convert it to DC before it gets to the car, increasing the speed of charge . Thank you for the comment and watching
@GlenMacNeil
@GlenMacNeil 5 месяцев назад
Curious if you had a chance to torque your connections at the breaker and the charger? With the continuous load of 48A for many hours, the conductors tend to heat up significantly and of course cool down when charge is complete. The expansion and contraction of the conductors (especially stranded conductors) tend to loosen the connections over time.
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 5 месяцев назад
You are 100% correct in that Glen. This charger install was done for a customer, and I would consider friend. It would be an excellent idea to check it after the 1st year. (I have not yet been back to do that) I actually tighten load centers connections during service calls. Especially if I was in the load center already. I have noticed that phenomena myself from being out in the field. Thank you for watching and commenting on my channel! All comments are welcomed and appreciated. @@YourFloridaElectrician I've been hearing some horror stories of poor installs with EV chargers resulting in overheated connections leading to fire. If we can convey to electricians and homeowners the significant, continuous load that is put on the panel, breaker, conductors and charging system while the vehicle is charging, it will make all of us better installers and service electricians by doing the little extra things like torquing connections. @YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 9 месяцев назад
Seems excessive. Maybe taking advantage of the high demand these days for EV installs. Sometimes, if you have a really nice house, they might price it based on thinking how much money you might have. It’s not fair, but it happens.
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 8 месяцев назад
My apologies, I neglected to answer your entire question. A 60 amp breaker will allow you to charge a little bit faster up to 48 A I believe. Not everyone would need faster, charging speed, but sometimes it comes in handy. In defense of licensed electricians out there , it takes a lot of time and effort and hard work to get this license and we shouldn’t just give that knowledge away. It is a professional trade, and it does demand professional wages. Even still, 5K seems a bit excessive. 🤑

Question if I'm buying 50ft of 6/3 NMB wiring, it comes wrapped up with with the neutral wire in it. Should I leave the neutral wire in and not connect it, or should I cut it out, because I don't need to connect the netural wire for 240V right?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 9 месяцев назад
Just don’t connect the neutral if you want but if I remember the ground on that wire is really small. I would prefer to connect the neutral as the ground. Also connect that neutral to the ground bar in the panel and not use that puny ground. If you have green tape you can tape the ends near where they terminate to indicate it’s being used as a ground. Electricity doesn’t care what color the insulation is. I believe having a ground larger is better to carry any kind of fault current. Thanks for watching and commenting

Awesome video. I also have an Emporia Charger. I'm in Ft Myers, Fl. (Lee County) I have paid an electrician to Install a Nema outlet. It's only 22" from my electrical panel. (Inside the garage). He used 3/4' PVC conduit. However, the conduit spins if turned. The connectors are glued on and sticking into the panel box and the outlet box. No lock nuts or straps securing it. Is this up to code? Or maybe just "allowed" because it's so close. As one of those "do it yourselves" homeowners, it really "pained" me to do have had to pay someone. And, I would have secured it regardless of code just to be on the safe side. I appreciate your input.
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for the comment. All PVC joints should be glued. Not only to keep it from moving, but also to keep it watertight. If you have some PVC glue, you may be able to fix it yourself. Turn off the breaker feeding the EV charger. If you can pull apart of the connections that are not glued a little bit and put glue there and put it back together. As far as the locknuts on the male adapters that go into the panel and the Emporia both should have locknuts. Nothing should be free spinning. Having one strap over 22 inches should be more than enough just in case someone walked by and something hooks the conduit and pulls on it you don’t want the wiring to be pulled out. Thank you so much for watching. Sorry you didn’t get to see it sooner.

@@YourFloridaElectrician thanks for replying. Your video was awesome. I love the thoroughness and also the humor. Nice Rivian as well. Yeah I watched your video right after the electrician came out. I hired one because was just worried because I’ve heard talk about not having it done with a company could be an insurance issue. However, I do have another question: The PVC pipe did have glue but still turned/spun. I did call the company and ask them if they could come and look at it. I asked the electrician if he could put lock nuts on the ends, where it enters the box and the panel. He refused and said “it’s not normal that the homeowners go back and look over their work.” Because I had actually felt the pipe and noticed it spinning and not being secured. I also understand that a 22 inch PVC pipe probably doesn’t need to be strapped. My question is twofold. Is this any kind of code violation and should I pursue this with the company or drop it because it will probably never be inspected? Thanks again for taking the time.
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 10 месяцев назад
@@pearlmcp that’s funny it’s not normal somebody look over there work. I think it should be normal cause sometimes they do such a lousy job. As far as just adding a lock nut and a strap, I don’t think it’s worth pursuing. If you’re handy, you would have to carefully remove the wiring from the breaker and the ground bar on the panel side and slide a lock nut over and then put the wiring back. Same on the EV charger side. You would have to put everything back nice and tight as it was. The reason for the lock nuts is to make sure the condo. It doesn’t get pulled out of the panel or out of the EV charger. I need a case be super careful working on electrical.

So here is the reply from Jack from Emporia: Jack (Emporia Energy) Dec 4, 2023, 15:01 MST Hello Alfred, the charger should continue to operate in the state it was in prior to the power outage. The charging session might time out on the cars end though depending on the specific make/model.@@dandolittle6372

If it’s under an inch, you don’t really need one. Still good to have, but it’s not necessary.. I don’t recall if I put one or not. I probably did. Different AHJ’s will have different opinions. Thanks for watching and commenting .

It would have helped to have the Charger Station mounted to the wall so, viewers could SEE how you wired in the Station.2nd tip: When you "clamped" your Liquid Tite, you should have left the "droop" in it so, theoretically, the water from rains would drain DOWN AND AWAY from fitting at service panel entry and at charger. 3rd: Shouldn't you TORQUE down your bolts, per spec, as opposed to cranking them down?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 5 месяцев назад
Great points. The design of the Emporia does not really facilitate being able to have in mounted and being able to do any wiring to it, unfortunately. I did, however, purchase a camera stand that will now be looking down at what I'm working on. In regard to the drip loop. Always a good idea for a drip loop. At the bottom of the EV charger there is a loop and the bottom of the electrical panel has a 90 degree connector coming out so I'm thinking water will not be able to enter that way. I appreciate you watching and commenting because I am always trying to be better and be a better content creator. I hope you consider liking, subscribing and sharing. Thanks again. YFE

I’m not sure the cost of living there. If it’s a very similar, install being a short run as far as the conduit and wiring. Several hundred dollars at least. Again that’s completely up to you and your expenses and your living situation if you know the person, etc.. I wish you the best of luck with your install. Please keep us informed how it goes.

Charing module is the core component for EV charger. As we know top three EV charger manufacturers in USA are Chargepoint, Blink Charging and EVgo . Do you know whether they made the charging modules by themselves, or the charging module is provided by specific companies, and what are their names? I wanna look for a charging module maker.

@@YourFloridaElectrician can the liquid tight use it for 60ft? from panel to charger location
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 6 месяцев назад
It can be used for 60 feet, but you will have to strap it every foot or so. Otherwise it’s gonna look terrible. it’s gonna be all wavy because the car flex comes in rolls and even you straighten it out. It wants to stay that way. I would use it for flexibility over obstacles, or very short runs. Use or transition into some schedule 40 PVC that will look much better on a long run . Hope this helps.

Can you please explain why no neutral wire needed?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 8 месяцев назад
As per manufactures installation instructions. No neutral is needed. The manufactures installation instructions will always supersede the NEC. After all, who knows best how to install ones own product right? Typically 240 Volt circuits will not need a neutral like in the case of a Water heater, no neutral. Some other 240 Volt appliances need a neutral to be able to achieve different voltages for different heating settings like a cook top or a dryer. Sometimes 120 volts is needed on a 240 volt appliance internally for the electronics like the clock timer or the like. In short. Best to install as manufacture suggest. Here is the link to the emporia EV chager install manual: uploads-ssl.webflow.com/5fff2b7694451e66ba2f5a3d/64342cda6d9690ab0094f77c_EV%20Charger%20Installation%20and%20Usage%20Guide.pdf I hope this helps.

That Nema, 14-50 outlet could be used for more than just the EV charger. You could unplug the EV charger and plug a range into it and it would work.

@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician Год назад
I guess you could. Page 19 of the Emporia instruction manual is a bit vague. Specifically says use number six for the line side’s and then says, and a ground. 10 would probably work, but I have run into resistance issues with some existing installs, I think because of the under size ground. For me, it’s just better to bite the bullet and put on number six the same as the rest. Thanks for commenting. 👍

@@YourFloridaElectrician You can use 1 size down (#8) That's what Emporia recommends. BTW the Wire lugs should have been Torqued! Was a load management report done prior to installation. Was job Permitted?
@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 11 месяцев назад
Sam. You could use a size down, especially if the manufacturer says so. Same as a condenser unit will say max fuse 30 A, but it will also say minimum ampacity 18 A so you can get away with a 12 wire it seems crazy. That of course, is only for the inrush current to prevent the breaker from tripping. A standard house with a 200 amp service. How many times do you got to do the load calcs? This video wasn’t for how to do a load calculation. The videos are geared towards your homeowner being able to do their own installation and thus pulling their own homeowner pulled electrical permit. That also was not covered in this video. I do appreciate all the comments it helps me grow as a Electrician, and as a RU-vidr Many thanks !

@YourFloridaElectrician
@YourFloridaElectrician 6 месяцев назад
Depends on many factors: 1. Install location in proximity to your electrical panel. 2. Size of the circuit you want to run. 60amp, 50amp and so on. 3. If your in an apartment, condo or residential setting. 4. Your existing electrical service if it needs work or can handle an EV charger as is. 5. Your part of the country. Are you in Alaska or in Florida. It makes a difference.

Hey Harrison, yeah I agree for the most part. Almost everything today needs to be commissioned in one way or another. Thank you for your comments. I am trying to do different styles of installs. I did a couple of installations in PVC, and for this install, I decided to show with carflex to show how easy it is to work with. Doing the same sort of install with every EV charger would be boring. The sag in the carflex under the EV charger is called a drip loop to prevent water from running into the electrical panel. That was done by Design. I do, however, appreciate your commentary and watching the video . Thank you
