One year ago, on International Women's Day 2023, the OECD.AI team asked whether rapidly advancing AI systems were addressing the gender equality issues that have plagued policymakers for decades and whether enough was being done to ensure that today’s AI systems do not perpetuate today’s inequalities into the future. While such challenges are global in nature, they play out in practice in diverse local contexts around the world, including across Africa.
A dialogue for trustworthy AI that leaves no one behind: experts explore how AI can empower women in Africa through the OECD-African Union AI Governance Dialogue
The week of this year’s International Women’s Day saw African policy makers, AI researchers, entrepreneurs and civil society members gather at the OECD on 5-6 March 2024 for a two-day dialogue on AI governance. Facilitated by the government of the United Kingdom, the first of its kind AI governance dialogue brought together leading voices across the OECD and Africa on issues from AI regulation to data governance.
One session focused specifically on how to catalyse AI for women’s empowerment in Africa. Moderated by Nagham El Houssamy, Associate Director for Research in Middle East and Africa at the American University in Cairo, the panel discussion was built around a central question: How can we better promote policies that catalyse AI’s potential for women’s empowerment while mitigating its risks and challenges?
