Hi! We're the devs of En Garde! Thanks a lot for this wonderful review! 😄 We'd like to mention that we've made a few bug fixes and improvements for the launch version that fix some of the issues you mention in the review! Hope you'll enjoy the game!
I was obsessed with The Mask of Zorro and The Princess Bride's fencing scenes as a kid, and always wished there could be a video game that recreated that kind of lighthearted swashbuckling feel. I think y'all have made my old dream a reality. I'm picking this up ASAP!
I did the same, but I think it fucked up the Surprise Kick move. It turns it into X+B (on an Xbox gamepad) and that is super difficult to press simultaneously. Luckily that move isn't the most important.
Best choice u made. I remember wen I played a game similar to this (Jedi fallen order) I remapped the light attack to R1 instead of square and heavy attack to triangle
This year has been an absolute gem for indie and budget games. Right now I am playing Turbo Overkill and loving it and already this is one on my list. I love having so many fun cheaper games that I can play without worrying about AAA problems.
Seems like fun! And having its scope be a bit more bite-sized is a plus for me. Too many games need 80+ hour playthroughs and oftentimes a 5 hour romp is just what i want.
As someone who loves movies like The Mask of Zorro, The Three Musketeers, and the original Pirates of the Caribbean (before I got sick of both Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp), I found it exciting to see an original video game with a genuine appreciation for the "Swashbuckler" genre. I'll honestly wait and hope for a console release. But, I'll hope more that this will lead to a new style of action game. I'm all for more "En Garde" if they continue to refine it.
My personal tip to see which enemy you're locking onto: Hold an item your hand that can target enemies (not to other objects). You'll see a white outline around the target you're focusing on.
I've been keeping track of this game since I first heard about the demo. I'm sad to hear it only took 5 hours to finish the story. I'm usually on the side of shorter games, but by that I mean like 10 hours instead of 100. I wish $20 wasn't so much money to me right now, or I'd give it a try today.
As a long time Zorro fan (since the days of Guy Williams) it was baffling to me that no decent zorro game has been created! Those days are over! En Garde is Zorro the game! A great game that feels so satisfying to put down hordes of naive guards using your technical knowledge as much as getting an advantageous position and even using the environment! Just like Don Diego De La Vega would do! I absolutely love this game for what it set to be, it succeeded with flying colors!
Its a fantastic game, one that absolutely deserves a sequel which builds on the excellent combat and the okay paltforming to make a modern.action adevnture masterpiece
This looks pretty good and I might pick it up one day, unfortunately it came out too close to Baldur's Gate 3 (which I'm 100 hours deep into so far), Armored Core 6 next week and Starfield in 2 weeks.
@billh7451 Baldur's Gate 3 has boring gameplay compared to En Garde lol...I got bored from the first 20 min from that game...Armored Core 6 feels boring, never liked mech shit, Starfield...well if is another Fallout 76...no ty...
Funny you mentioned the Control issues with the game (trying to parry while moving the camera). It makes me realize that I take my Xbox Elite controller for granted, seeing how I can do all the face button actions while moving the camera at the same time when playing the demo. Which is a shame, really since that's something the developers should've taken into consideration. Here's hoping you can at least remap some of the buttons to the shoulder/bumpers
I cant see Jesse swinging a sword in a historical setting without setting off smoke bombs in crowds of civilians, thanks to the AC: Black Flag streams haha
Judging by the negative points that you gave to the game, i have a feeling that you played it the wrong way. This game is not meant to be a Dark Souls in every single way. You don't need a camera lock because the areas are very dynamic and you will need to move quickly between places to use the scenario in your favor. It would be a mess to put a camera lock on it. Yet it still a soulslike combat, but it have it own playstyle proposal.
