A lot of people talk about the context of this song, and I have to disagree. The lyrics are so powerful that this song stands on its own, holding a strong message even if you listen to it with zero context.
I was eldest sibling in our asian family... the worker, the organizer, the most responsible, the adviser and the person they see as a mentally healthy anchor. But recently, something very bad happened to me, caused me to loose every strength I had... Doctor diagnosed me with PTSD and depression. I felt so weak and had no worth. Blamed everything on myself... I took anti-depressant when no one else knew, Not even my own siblings. But I continued to project that strong facade for my family while trying to do therapy.. Bec that time, I was reviewing on my Board exam, they expect me to pass with high grades but I failed badly because I was mentally unstable... I felt their disappointment... they dont know the real reason. I lied to them that I am still okay. That Pressure continues to grow inside me... I am measuring my own pressure because of expectations from others. Little more and I will blow up. I did not have the strength to be too open cause I feel that the time when they knew that im so broken, I would be of to no use... Watching and hearing the song "Surface Pressure" hit me in such a way that it broke me that night, every beat built my anxiety inside. The movie is very triggering and healing at the same time... And watching this encouraged me to talk to my family about everything that is happening to me. I want to fight this battle with them... Not alone... Thank you for reacting into this song!

I definitely love how this movie highlights, that even though Maribel doesn't have a "gift", she's still so special and important. I think that speaks volumes, especially with so many people who struggle to feel important in this crazy world. But keep your head up! I'm praying for peace of mind for you! 💕

And I think everybody should be commenting this song and this film. It’s a big move from Disney and it’s time to speak about the “minor” mental health issues before they “pop”. Especially after the quarantines and all this stuff. it’s the definition of anxiety. And instead of relaxing or trying to get some break, she still is thinking about the pressure and so stressing more and more… it’s the person who is about to break, at the border of the burn out, but still she has to keep being strong.
You're so right! This song was so deep and not even a happy song because Luisa measures her worth as a person by her gift and how she can use it in the service if others and not as an individual who's worthy just because she is a person with her own dreams and values. In the song she literally carries the weight of the entire house on her shoulders. I love this song so much it's my favorite in the whole movie.
I'm w/you this song just 😭😭😭 I should not be in my feels this had but Ive listened to this song so much it's crazy. It's so great, especially because it's such a serious song but it's so upbeat so it doesn't come off as depressing as it really is.

Honestly all the songs in this movie are deceptively happy, masking what's going on underneath. It's so relatable and cleverly composed. Also, if you hadn't already put it together, the donkey connection is that they are a beast of burden. And yet Luisa spends the whole movie carrying THEM around.
I love this song, it reminds me a lot to my sister. All of us can relate to it and we all have been in this situation. Loved the reaction amd comments of you girl buuut Im actually mad at you, bro haha. A super well done and deep song with a message and the man just joking and joking about the donkeys and 8n the end she was talking with good thoughts and ghe other part continuing joking.
I’ve been watching it nonstop lol. I listen to this song, I see the diversity, the Latino roots and familial pressure and obligation and it makes me cry. Because I have always been the strong on too…and it’s mentally exhausting. I am 28 and burnout but have to continue going.
