Altengrad is a time-progression Cities: Skylines series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

I legit love the story and the progression of this series! From medieval to renaissance, to pre WWI, WWII, the cold war era and now the modern era. I love the juxtaposition of old and new next to each other!

this series is incredible, the history, the story, the detailing, realism. It reminds me of the Mars series, like next level Cities: Skylines, but RU-vid content in general. The Palast der Republik wasn't at the Alexanderplatz. The Alexanderplatz is about 1 km east behind the rail tracks. The Palast der Republik was at position where the Schloss/Humbold-Forum is today. The open spaces around the Palast der Republik are Schlossplatz, Lustgarten and Marx--Engels-Forum. (Anyway: Very nice episode again! Thank you)

Late 80s we did a yearly autumn school trips to Tatra Mountains in Slovakia which were fantastic. 1989 we had to get passports since going with just ID cards was over. It took 2 weeks to get them, showing up at the police station every two days or so. I have no idea how my teacher convinced police to give a bunch of school kids passports, what a hero.

There's a good book on why the Revolutions of 1989 happened so quickly and why their extent was so unexpected - "Private Truths, Public Lives" by Timur Kuran. The basic argument is that so many had been hiding their true beliefs under communism that nobody realized just how widespread the discontent was. Once the movement picked up enough steam, more and more people felt empowered to join and it quickly snowballed in a way nobody foresaw.

It's interesting in the case of East Germany to note just how sudden and unexpected the end was. Of course the Monday prayers and demonstrations had been going on all year - but the announcement of the immediate opening of the border i.e. fall of the Berlin Wall was a huge mistake by the government. They sent out some minor minister to do a press conference and didn't give him details. The border was planned to be opened later, presumably in a more controlled manner, but when asked for a timescale he just said "As far as I know, immediately" which led to citizens overwhelming the border posts. The Stasi and police also came close to violently cracking down on one of the biggest marches in Leipzig but decided not to. Things could have ended very differently!
