I work at an assisted living facility and try to bring them as much joy as possible. I take them out shopping, bowling, i taught them rummy this week. I let them order Margaritas at the restaurant and when we do karaoke i listen to the house of the rising sun one of their favorites. And I always joke with them Im not grown enough to hang out with them! Lol. A 91 year old told me this week she watched the fish for an hour. "Why?" I asked. Her response " I just noticed for the first time in my life they were having sex. So i watched them have sex for an hour. And then when their done they make a fish face..." lmbo. I tell you Im not grown enough for these ladies. On the opposite side of this.... I sit with lots of them while they transition. I touch them and rub their hands and arms. And do energy work (in my mind) on them. Its really weird but I really enjoy being their for them and the families during this time. Just giving that last bit of love to them is amazing. ❤

Marjorie Richardson my momma just passed recently and I’m having the hardest time bc she was also my every day best friend. I don’t work anymore and I have the hardest time every day. It happened unexpectedly sept 22 after a blotched surgery that was only suppose to be a three day stay and then home again. I can’t get a hold of myself. I haven’t had a dry day since. How does one go about working with the elderly without a degree... as in volunteering? I need to be around them ... I need to help them. I need to find someone that reminds me of my momma. I need to see her again. She was only 81 and she was still so full of life. She drove, cooked, cleaned, shopped. One surgery and gone. 😢 💔

@@valkh83 Im so sorry for your loss. The unxpected loss of a loved one can be extremely hard to cope with. I am also finishing my degree in counseling and I would first suggest to seek out a counselor to help you through this time. But ro answer your question, just call up the local places around you and tell them what you want to do and whos the person you nees to speak to. Where I work that would be me. I am the Director of Life Enrichment. But it can have many different titles. Theres probably a form you fill out with your info. And then your off and running feom there. Good luck! sending light and love!

@@valkh83 Deepest condolences. I would recommend that you contact your local hospice, you can join a support group for adults who have lost a parent. It is tremendously helpful in dealing with your loss. After that you can ask about volunteer opportunities there or at other facilities that serve our elders.

The first thing I think about when to talk about someone dying, "let them have tequila" is my Uncle. My Aunt and Uncle lived next door. They were like my second set of parents. More times than not they WERE my parents. They came from a place of Love. There was no judging. So when he finally went to the doctor he already knew it was cancer. They convinced him to do the chemo and radiation. This was a man that had drank a beer every day in his life. After the chemo, beer never tasted the same. I felt like this thing he did every day and enjoyed was stolen from him. It was the same for my Father, he loved smoking a cigar. When they found the cancer it had already spread. I wished that he would not do chemo but he was a Great Fighter and felt that he was in that 1% that could beat it. He stopped smoking his cigars and went into treatment. Of course what it gave him was a year and a half of sickness and hell. I wished often that he had just continued on with his life and enjoyed it. Sitting on his back porch smoking a cigar and watching the river flow by. At his funeral I put a couple cigars in his pocket forgetting the lighter so I'm sure he is still asking for a light. He visited me 3 times after his death. Each time he seemed a little more at peace. The last time he was actually laughing so knew he was finally happy. So yes, if they had a couple drinks or smoked a cigar let them have those things. What else do they have but our Love ???

🥰 I worked in a US government run nursing home (totally _not_ the best option for your loved ones, btw 😪) and one of my fav residents was Jack. He was 62 and wheelchair bound with a terminal illness. He had such a positive vibe and had a joke ready for any occassion, always making me smile. He would smell us employees coming in from a smoke break and lament how much he missed "a cold bud and a ciggy". One day I took him outside and gave him one of my cigarettes (apologizing that I couldn't supply the Budweiser too) and he was the happiest I'd seen him in months. Two weeks later his illiness took him home and though I missed his presence, I'm just thankful I could be one of the last moments of his freedom of choice while on this Earth. I imagine him now, younger and dancing at a sock hop in his Navy uniform, a Budweiser in one hand and a pretty gal on the other. 😊

OMG. I just got home from visiting my moms lock down dementia center. She was a strong confident in charge woman before this disease. I cry all the way home each and every time knowing she doesn’t understand why we lock her away. I too take pastries and pass them out. I too think they need a margarita or wine dispenser in each wing and wish they would allow them all the CBD they need to cope with this horrible disease. I fix faces and hair while I’m there. A little blush a French braid does wonders for their disposition usually. Thank you for this little video. You made me feel like I’m doing the best we can in this life. I am a subscriber.

Allison I watched another of your posts, where you said 'Don't think of it as another day away from the person who passed, but another day nearer to seeing them again'. This helped me so much, as I miss my best beloved husband Philip, who died 2 years ago on the 6th of this month.. I talk to him every night and tell him what I've been upto during the day, always tell him 'I Love and Miss him' and hope he and all the other 'Above the Cloud Angels I have' are waiting for me and will come get me when it's my turn to leave this mortal plain.. You also said here that we are here to 'learn' and change something from a past life, that we haven't learned yet.. I wonder, in a previous life, if I were dismissive or cruel, as I have lost my Grandparents, Parents, Husband, my Sister and our Son... So maybe a life lesson I have here is 'empathy' to either teach it or give it and my time freely to others.. Best wishes to you from Wales UK..

Oh I just love you Allison! You are Such a phenomenal woman with such a sweetheart of a personality! And I adore your humor 😂 “Give em’ tequila they’re dying anyway” Sooooo much what you said and everything in between! I was into nursing before I got Crohn’s disease & Multiple Sclerosis, and the best few years of my career were the ones I spent in a nursing home 🙌🏼💯♥️ The stories that I got to hear and the people I got to know & love were such the biggest blessings! A patient on “my hall” in particular that I absolutely adored and it reminded me of what you said here (about the above referenced tequila) He was dying of terminal lung cancer. His daughters wouldn’t allow him to continue to smoke, so would not provide cigarettes for him 😢 He would always be out on one of the patios where the employees would go to have a smoke break, etc. and I have to admit I’m among the few of us working there that are guilty of giving him cigarettes 😝💯🙌🏼♥️ Like what the hell hes dying anyway, LET him smoke!! ♥️🙌🏼💯😍

Allison is 100% on her views of convalescent facilities where a lot of our seniors end up. For a short time, I worked in one as a CNA. Long story short, I left that job and I never ever want to be in a long term care facility. Yes, let them eat and drink whatever they want. Whatever makes them happy is such the better way to go. I'd always ask my patients what music they loved to listen to and I'd make it happen for them, at least when I was in their room.

We don’t do enough to celebrate our elders. I just love them and it makes my day to bring a smile to anyone’s face but especially those who are nearing the end of this life’s journey. They have been my greatest teachers. It’s not a coincidence that babies and the elderly go together! They are so much themselves, often so authentic at the fringes of life, beginning and end, alpha and omega, no wonder they adore each other!

Oh my land Allison we are in total agreement ! I have chronic pain and when I see wrinkle commercials it drives me crazy! I would take wrinkles over pain any day! Have you ever touched on your thoughts making up your world with those who have crossed? I also believe bland diets for people whose taste buds are not working well is a crime. Every person should have the option of choosing how they want to live at their end of life. If they want to watch what they eat and get every second they can good for them! If they want to eat what they want and leave sooner good for them. It shouldn't be up to the Doctor or family or anyone else but the person.

I really understand what you mean, I don't know, but having to spend the last moments with my grandmother who was also my Mum( she adopted me), she was 95yrs, in my culture we have our love ones at home with us, when they die they are still with us for 3 days. I must say those minimal times I had with her, we're so beautiful, she would wander in her mind, to the other side and then back to us, and talk about her father, who she would see, and who was waiting for her, my mum also, conveyed messages from the other side as well, it was absolutely beautiful, and sad to hear these, I truly agree with you, about how this makes other people feel, but I felt Sad, but happy to know she was not alone, alone. It was hard to tell her to go, and that it was okay, and that I would be okay, I knew she was fighting to stay, I miss her abundantly, it will be a year June 20, My. Her birthday is 11/10/1924 and me 24/02/74, Mum was meant to walk me down the aisle, on 22/02/2020, I know she was there, as it rained a little, not so much, just a little and not for too long, as once my car drove up and parked the rain slowly stopped, Tears of joy from above, says my wife.again this too is also a cultural meaning. Sorry for the long story, I just wanted to share and let people dying doesn't need to be a scary thing, and yes about the food thing you mentioned, we gave mum what ever she asked for, like coke, and pie, lollies, food her daughter told us she couldn't have, ohh yeah and a beer..lol...and when we got the ” don't feed her that or let her eat that, I thought, what difference is going to make, she's in pain, she's asking for these, what difference is it really going to make. Mum was the only left here on earth, there was 14 of them, so I'm jealous now, that she's in heaven with them all, but ohh so happy for her at the same time. I deeply share that feeling, too, Paloma, but get the sense that once we return home and heal, something compels us again. Love to you on your journey, wherever that takes you! 💖🤗🙏🌈

You are both quite the "Dynamic Duo" each with a special energy that keep you bantering on such a taboo topic. Seldom do folks dare to speak about this I watched two of my sisters pass in mid-life, due to cancer. Knowing there is another side where we'll reunite is comforting. In the meantime, Alison you're so on point about living your best life in the here and now....loved this session!

I love your video, Allison DuBois, the topic and points you make, as well as your sense of humor! Thank you for sharing the story about the 60 year old man. That story helped me because I think my fiance who had terminal cancer did the same thing with medication at the end and this helps me deal with it better. I'm just happy he is free from that body that caused him so much pain at the time, but still alive somewhere close to my heart

Thanks for discussing this deeply meaningful subject. My partner who recently passed over and I met in our mid-50s. We only had a few years together before he went suddenly but they were very loving ones for him which gives me comfort. At the end he was comatose, I told him it was okay, to call his dogs and go with them.

I’ve always believed basically everything you guys have just said. So thanks for the confirmation. Also my son unfortunately never got to meet my father in the physical life, yet the amount of physical mannerisms, traits and general outlook regarding life that they share proves so much to me. Even more so that no one else in the family has these mannerisms etc. I am convinced my son spent a lot of time with my father before he came to me or maybe he is my father. I know in time I’ll know the answer for sure. In the meantime I’m happy to enjoy the time we share in this physical life and the lessons we teach each other. Thank you for a great video. Xx

Kardelian Moon I wonder sometimes if my son is my father. Similar likes in food and mannerism, walking, whistling, poker playing ....he’s really going for it in what he wants to do in life too. It seems like it would be the next logical step for my dad in a new life.

That’s like me I m surrounded by animals, I love them all. No abuse, I m safe. Not scared of the afterlife I met my grandfather from the other side on 3 occasions, to me that was the only affirmation I needed. I also got a big hug from one of my late cats she gave me the gift of peace after her passing I d really struggled to get over her lose until she hugged me - next day no pain, no upset it had all gone. I do regret not being there for my grandma when she passed in hospital. I knew she was dying that night but didn’t go, I did know that one of many came to collect her, but wished I could have held her hand at the moment of her passing.
