This is an incredibly generous review of my book, thank you very much. I worked hard on the different element of the journeys, and if I'm honest, the 'me' bits weren't what i set out to write - they certainly weren't in the initial proposal, but that's what happens when you write a book about journeys and meaning at the same time as your life falling apart. I just rolled with it and thought, you know what, this is me, this is the book. And then i was surrounded by all this audio i got from meeting with the most amazing people. It was a joy to meet them. Their stories are the centre of it all. I set out to map it all together and i think at the end I'm happy with how the strands knit together. Thanks again, PJ. (btw the Alf book was surprisingly popular, sold around 3,000 so far - not being churlish, just thought I'd mention it. Hill climbs a bit less popular than The King).

You’re welcome. My point about the Alf book was more that it wasn’t written for the money - I’m glad it sold 3000! That’s about 2980 more than mine!

I’m still trying to decide which cycling biography you were talking about.

@@JulianHutchings this is true, I guess all the books (all three!) have been written because I felt I wanted to write them, they were stories that mattered to me. This is of course a bit of a truism, surely everyone writes like this? I'm grateful to Adrian Bell at Mousehold Press for getting the first two out there. Anyway, again, thank you for this and for picking up on the prose, the sentences and patterns.

I'm from the USA. And looks like i can't get it.. but i know some people in Scotland so i will be getting it. From the part you read, me not knowing the route/ area sounds like it will still be an outstanding book to read. Really sound like he has captured why we ride!

Such a wonderful review. If the book is half as good and captivating as your review of it, then it is certainly a page turner. I’ll check it out. Thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful review, full of positivity, humour, emotion and in many ways, quite inciteful about the reviewer as well as the author and the book itself. Keep up the good work Julian, I love the tongue in cheek humour - do keep it going but quality will always win out and less is often more.

It sounds like a cycling version of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' by Robert M Pirsig. Thanks for the great review.

I read that when I was about 21, along with The Dice Man and that shite by Carlos Castaneda.

@@JulianHutchings Wow, I hadn't noticed! This is great. A surprisingly happy piece of media. I bought Love's lost in Girona and Cycling shorts and cycle clips, they are currently second and third on my list to read. Now they might be third and fourth. Is that acceptable??

Great review - thanks for posting it. I'm going to order that straight away as it sounds right up my street in more ways than one. A favourite of mine, though not so lyrical perhaps, is The Year by Dave Barter. A bit out of date now, as two female riders were challenging for the year record as he was writing it, but for truly gob smacking achievements on bikes, it's a great read. Two more I can recommend are Endless Perfect Circles by Ian Walker and Where There's a Will by Emily Chappell. Both are about endurance road riding, and both are well worth a look. More cycling book reviews please Julian!
@JulianHutchings

I’ve read some of Barter’s work; not my favourite. Chappell I’ve read - not as good as they say. The other I don’t know. You could always try one of mine!
