Honestly, I feel it was a very clever joke and a fun double twist. Though the abrupt ending joke was a little too predictable for my taste. But over all I say this video was above par and I really liked the "No I am ending this" combo with "it was a dream". Very on point.

Hey JP, I got a question. Which is worse; When a writer starts with an ending and tries to build a story around their ideal conclusion? Or A writer who starts a story and keeps it going so long they don't know how to tie up every loose end?

I get the feeling that this episode was partly a swipe at 'The Last Jedi' since Rian Johnson dumped a lot of JJ Abram's ideas for the sake of a twist.

About 70 years ago, a similar thing happened with the world's first miniseries, Patrick Mcgoohan's The Prisoner. In terms of genre weirdness, only Twin Peaks and Legion have ever matched that one. Mcgoohan didn't know how to end his story until he actually sat down to write it. And when the finale aired, people got so pissed that he spent a couple of weeks in the mountains. But...he was DELIGHTED by the response. He never attacked anyone over it, just calmly explained how he got there. D&D could have learned from that.

The ending to my story is quite literally “the good guys win and the bad guys lose.” Obviously there’s more to it than that. But the loose ends have been tied up beforehand, all that was left was the final battle and the culmination of the MC’s character development. Nothing more, nothing less. And also fuck anybody who tells you happy endings are cliche or cheating or boring. Mate I have the fluffiest most saccharine ending you don’t even know. My chars have been through hell and back, all other obstacles have been cleared, all that was needed was the big bad dying. Now they can go and live normal happy lives with their families and loved ones knowing they earned that shit. Your audience will appreciate a happy ending if your characters deserve it.

@MegaGlassguy

''Your audience will appreciate a happy ending if your characters deserve it.'' Nailed it. And that's what makes the difference between good and bad ''happy endings'' for me. If the story was just the MC winning over and over again with no struggle and then gets his happy ending, then it's boring as heck (though to be fair, the same can be said of the story as a whole at that point). If they fought and lost and struggled back up and so on, you bet I want to see them succeed. I do like the middle-ground of bittersweets ending myself if the setting of the story simply doesn't allow for a happy ending for everyone (basically any story following multiple characters in different factions that are neither good nor evil), but that doesn't mean I don't want them to try and reach their happy ending after all they have to go through.

But he didn't change after discovering he's piece of trash instead he just directs his agression at himself, when he always blamed everyone else and now is blaming himself. It's still no good- he still isn't cured. And has very honest conversation with the most important person for him. That person tells him that he need to change and stop punishing himself cuz it's way to nowhere. Whole ending is gives hope but there's no continuation. Is it good ending???

I've always thought that revealing a twist at the end of a story is the worst time, because it gives the book absolutely zero time to deal with the consequences of what the twist means for the world and its characters. If the twist is revealed in the middle, it allows the twist to be interacted with and lead to a satisfying conclusion, rather than just dropping the audience into a "How Does That Change What I Just Read" mentality

I think it depends on the twist. If the twist concerns some important part of the story, but not the main plot or premise, it is often more interesting to have the characters deal with it. A twist that reveals that the central premise or the main plot where actually something else can often fits better at the very end. The reason being not that it would not be interesting, but rather that a central twist would often realistically throw most of the characters into a crisis and have them reevaluate their motivations and goals, or even disrupt all character connections. That can of course be very interesting, however it has the potential to change the tone of the story aswell as all character relations to the point where it's basically a new story with new characters in a new genre.
@MB-lz5eb
@MB-lz5eb 2 года назад
Where would you say these twists should go (side note: how many twists is too many for one story?)? 1) Main character's give-advice-from-HQ teammates are in his/her head, not in some secret physical location (known to this character/group, but not to the reader or other characters). 2) A side character's "twin who's never in the same place at the same time" is really a multiple personality, and inspires the main character to be open about his/her teammates' existence. 3) What looks like serial murders are actually serial funerals set up by an unlicensed doctor who keeps accidentally killing his patients.

Out of all the fiction I've experienced, I think the best ending is Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood. The ending was quite literally the perfect way to finish a 64 episode journey of stakes and sacrifices. Code Geass and Avatar are a close second
@aster-naut
@aster-naut 4 года назад
Laiser I really liked Avatar's ending; despite it being predictable, it was satisfying (something GoT writers could learn from), but it did have some problems, namely the whole mess that was Katara and Aang (I never felt that Katara would be on board with that, she acts like Aang's mother or older sister and the character opportunities for Aang that would come from this rejection would be much more interesting than a half hearted relationship ending) and Iroh abandoning Zuko to become firelord at 16 for nothing more than a tea shop, but I do think it could have done with a sequel; the originally planned season 4. I feel like having at least a passing reference to the fact that they need to rebuild and that this is only the first step would help the ending. I'll explain what was going to happen in season 4 and why I think this would be a great addition if you want, just ask. I also loved the ending to Code Geass; despite the messy parts of the 2nd season (the whole 'the emperor was good-ish all along' bit mainly), it did an amazing job of bringing the story to a satisfying, if tragic ending. FMAB was amazing, my one criticism was that the whole 'Mustang wants to be the Führer' arc was never really completed. A single sentence saying that he was putting aside his aims for now to help the Ishvalans and a photo in the end credits of him as Führer would make that ending perfect.

As a (mostly) discovery writer/panster, I really appreciated that Honest Writing Advice segment. I've been stressing out over how to end my stories because I let the characters develop for themselves, instead of plotting it out in great detail beyond general ideas. I feel bad because I don't want to write something terrible at the end and disappoint the audience, but doing what comes naturally would probably be better than trying to show how "incredibly smart"I am. A few times in the past, me not being able to figure out what the ending was made me stop the story before I even started writing, and that sort of mentality is hard to break, but I'm getting through it. And you're right, way too many sites encourage people to have the "perfect ending" when that won't work for everyone. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks again.

Alice in Wonderland being a dream fits thematically and makes the whole story make sense. Same with Oz. The themes in that revolve around Dorothy coming to terms with her own life. The lesson she learns carries through past the dream. That's the key to making that ending work, I think.

Honestly that last book was a mess, and the biggest problem is that he clearly wrote himself into a corner. When he revealed the source of Galbatorix’s strength in the third book, it revealed just how dangerous he was, and how difficult taking him down would be. I thought there would be some sort of elegant and brilliant solution that would allow the heroes to outwit him, but instead it became painfully obvious that he had no idea how to get around this problem, and so instead resorted to multiple Deus Ex Machinas that opened up so many plot holes. The heroes won purely because of authorial bias, plain and simple.

I remember when I wrote the first draft of my story. While I am mostly an outliner and I had everything planned, there's a bit of discovery writing in me. There was one action scene when I was just writing when suddenly one of the bad guys comes up behind and stabs one of the characters... I stopped when that happened and realized what I had done. I never meant for them to die, they just happened to be in a setting where realistically they WOULD die. In the end I decided to keep it and move on. I have since edited the story where that makes more sense, but you get the point.

I've always wanted to write some epic fantasy story where a bunch of teenagers go on a grand adventure only for the main character to wake up at the end and realize it was a dream and wake up on the first day of school. Except when they arrive at class, one of the people from their dream is sitting there. And it's very obvious they recognize each other. Pretty much, the whole group had the same shared dream, only to find themselves sharing real life together and trying to figure out what happened and why. Ironically enough, I got THIS idea from a dream. Feel free to use it ;)

Some of my favorite endings: Hunger Games- It seems super happy on the surface, but if you look deeper it is so much more complicated. Peeta is happy and I think Katniss is to a certain extent too, but she most likely won't ever be able to leave the past behind completely. Loss, trauma, and her mistakes will continue to haunt her throughout her life. Lord of the Rings- Some people got better endings than others, but they all felt natural for the character. Most were bittersweet. I went through a full range of emotions reading them. Far From Men- The entire film built up to the last few minutes. I was confident Mohamed would follow through on his plan, but praying the whole time there would be an out. The scene where he made his final choice left me so happy and emotionally drained at the same time. I like that they actually made Daru accept the consequences of his choice. It hurt so much to see him suffer, but you know he will be okay in the end. I believe that Daru did the right thing (though I loved how much struggled to do it at times), but actions always have consequences. It was a brave ending. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood: The characters went through and lost so much already. I needed a happy ending just as much as they did. This was a rare case of a unabashedly happy, cheesy ending working perfectly in the story.

Giving short, flimsy justifications and lazy build up for their sudden changes that feel like someone shoehorned it in after the fact. It was obviously rushed because so much of it could've been solved with a few more episodes of thoughtful build up. Making important things they've built up over a long time turn out utterly irrelevant. Seemingly looking at the fan theories and trying their best to do the opposite of that even if the theories made a ton of sense. Gave pretty much everyone a miserable or unsatisfying conclusion. It didn't really help that the writing was already going to crap because the show writers overshot the books and didn't have George RR Martin's dialogue and story beats to crib from anymore.
