No music education is complete without a full dive into the Allman Brothers. Their music had an enormous impact on rock forever- two lead guitars, two drummers, first integrated band, the list goes on. The entire 1971 Live at Fillmore east is absolutely essential. Duane was steeped in blues and R&B and was THE definitive slide guitarist in rock, Dickey Betts brought more Country influence, and the two guitarists together morphed into an absolute force. Then Gregg's voice...

Hey guys! Although Zeppelin is my favorite band, the Allman Brothers are my second favorite and I’ve actually been playing guitar in an Allman Brothers tribute band for over 20 years… soulshine is a great song but yes, you MUST hear the original lineup with Duane on guitar and Berry on the bass. I would suggest either the studio version of Whipping post or definitely the live version of One way out from the Eat a peach album… The Allman Brothers may not have invented dual guitar harmonies, but they perfected it at a young age and Greg Allman is one of the greatest blues singers of all time. Yes, they were classified as southern rock, but they had a deep influence in blues and even jazz and Latin. But they could rock out!

I'm from Macon and grew up traveling the same streets that Duane Allman and Berry Oakley had their motorcycle accidents on. The crazy thing is that the accident sites were literally blocks from each other, and they happened almost exactly a year apart. Duane died October 29,1971 and Berry on November 11, 1972. They are buried next to each other in Rose Hill Cemetery and Gregg was laid to rest nearby not long ago. For those that aren't aware, Duane was traveling West on Hillcrest Ave in Macon and apparently swerved to avoid hitting the rear of a truck that was making a turn, and lost control of his motorcycle. As to Berry's accident.. he was traveling down nearby Napier Ave and there is a sharp curve at one point. He apparently lost control of his motorcycle and glanced off the side of a city bus. When police responded to the accident scene, Berry said he wasn't hurt and refused to get in an ambulance, and a friend gave him a ride home. Less than an hour later they took him to the Medical Center with a severe head injury and he died shortly thereafter.

In July of 1970, a girl and I hitch hiked to the Atlanta Pop festival. The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd were basically unknown and played the free stage. I think those performances are up on RU-vid still. I checked first and didn't see us running around naked, so they are safe for work. As a side note, Jimi Hendrix played Star Spangled Banner for us on July 4th and David Gilmour now wears the guitar strap Jimi used to play for us that night. A month and a half later Jimi left us forever and I was married. Jimi found freedom and I lost mine.

Nice reaction, Warren (the writer of the song) is a local buy, grew up a few miles from me. A little info, every December Warren does a weekend show called the "Christmas Jam" for Habitat for Humanity. I attended my first one in 1993. It's a weekend of jam with all kinds of bands playing and always a few that are not advertized. This year Billy Gibbons was the headliner others years it has been The Allman Brothers Band, The Avett Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, John Paul Jones, Ray LaMontagne, Steve Miller Band, Tedeschi Trucks Band. Great show if you are near North Carolina in December, you should check it out.

Enjoy your reactions. The Allman Brothers have been my favorite band since 1971. They were southern rock, then Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker band, wet Willy, Charlie Daniels and others. Go back to the first album, there is not a bad song. Start with the first track,Don’t want you know more and is Not My Cross To Bare, all one track. Would like you to consider a current band also. Tedeschi Trucks Band. Trucks played with the Allman for 16 years, his wife Susan Tedeschi is a phenomenal singer, very good guitarist, like a cross between Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. He is a most amazing musician. Everybody starts with Midnight in Harlem. Everybody’s Talking is also amazing. Please consider them live, they are an amazing live band, 12 piece, 2 drummer’s, horn section, backup vocals. It’s an amazing , big sound. Just something for you to think about. For Marshall Tucker , try This old cowboy, Heard it in a Love song. I love all that southern rock.

RIP Dwayne Allman. Greatest slide guitar player of all time. You should definitely check out their earlier stuff like basically anything from Live at the Filmore East. Whipping Post for sure, Gregg Allman was young and still had the raspy blues tone but was smoother if that makes sense. And the guitar work of both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts is just incredible. What’s crazy is Duane learned slide because he was sick and Gregg dropped him off a bottle (which was glass in the 60’s and 70’s) of Coricidin and had bought him an album of Taj Mahal, and Duane locked himself in his room for a week just playing non stop and became an animal on slide.
