The best place to look for a teacher is on the STAT website. They are the largest governing body of Alexander Teachers in the world. Hopefully they will have someone near you. alexandertechnique.co.uk/. I'm based in Manchester so if you are ever up this way, feel free to get in touch and we can book a lesson. It really helps to have 1-1 lessons if you are able but there may also be group classes in your area which can be good and working through the video s on this channel or doing an online course can also help a lot. If you have any other questions, drop me a line and I'll do my best to help!

do you think the alexander technique will help with non medical air hunger? I’ve heard other people say it works (one person is on youtube by the name of simon spire). I’ve gotten into a pattern of over breathing and my whole upper body is tense due to grabbing and reaching for air. The grabbing for air probably tightens my muscles more and leads to more “air hunger”. I’ve gotten medically cleared and the only thing I can think of that’s causing the air hunger is me messing up my breathing patterns and my breathing becoming more conscious. I’m hoping this technique will help me trust my body’s ability to breathe and stop my interference (grabbing for air in the upper chest).

Hi Alexis, This pattern of snatching air in and interfering with natural breathing patterns is definitely something that Alexander Technique teachers are very used to helping with. Making general improvements to balance and tension patterns in the body can help restore the natural movement of the ribs and unlearn the habits that affect breathing. I would definitely recommend working with a teacher if you can but also getting into a habit of regularly doing 'semi-supine or constructive rest' can be fantastic at calming down the breathing mechanisms. If you haven't already, have a work through these videos and see if, as you get better at quietening down yourself, do the breathing symptoms lessen? So based on this video, Alexander technique does not promote abdominal breathing (which is quite popular among the rehab industry) for daily use? What is the recommended way of breathing for speaking? We use intercostal lateral breathing for singing, but is that too professional for speaking?

Alexander technique is always about trying to stop interfering with the natural coordination of the body. This applies to any movement or activity. So the approach is to get better at stopping the habits we have in the way we use ourselves as a whole to restore more natural breathing patterns. When breathing is working naturally, there is an effortless to the in breath as it is the result of allowing the ribs to spring outwards which creates the pressure difference to draw the air in. There are of course specific breathing exercises used by vocalists and musicians who play brass and woodwind as they are developing a greater than normal capacity and power in their breathing systems but still, their breathing will perform closer to optimum levels when they learn to stop general bad habits of tension in the body. For example, when I'm working with a singer, they learn to apply the breathing and vocal exercises that their teacher has given them but I can help them establish a better coordination of their whole body while they do it which will improve the results. The Alexander technique gives them a better general starting place to apply their specific techniques.
