What a nice film ! And you got a point there. Today every "regular" driver can drive a sports car. In 1988 you needed a lot of experience. When you had to downshift before you went around the corner, missing that the turbo will accelerate you instead of decelerating or sliding (and ruin) the clutch while driving in city limits. If you want that feeling today you must buy either a Renault alpine or an Alfa Romeo C4.
