PLEASE RELEASE ME was actually a country song from 1949 and charted several times. Baby Gap is correct in her assessment of Engelbert sounding a tad "country" in his delivery. Humperdinck is English and born in India. His manager was Gordon Mills who named his artists after historical figures. Tom Jones from the Fielding novel, Humperdinck named after the German opera composer of HANSEL AND GRETEL and Gilbert O'Sullivan after the comic opera duo of Gilbert and Sullivan (Pirates of Penzance). Actually, Tom Jones recorded the song as a gospel song but Engelbert's version was released first. It was #1 for 7 weeks and broke The Beatles streak of 17 consecutive #1 hits. At 86 "Eng" is still touring.

I have always loved his voice from being a child, when mam & dad would play his music on the gramophone (record player,) most weekends, it was a done thing back then, along with Tom Jones, and another favourite of mine MATT MONROE (the singing bus driver) I would recommend giving MATT a listen, you may be surprised, these artists were from a certain era, they had STYLE, and in my opinion, although they are from a long gone era, they are still much better then most of what we have on the radio these days ❤

Humperdinck was born "Arnold George Dorsey". His original stage name was Gerry Dorsey. He had mild success but a few years later, his manager, Gordon Mills, suggested "Engelbert Humperdinck", and the rest is history. You should definitely watch his self-titled TV show that debuted in 1969. The level of talent on there is stunning, and you get to hear Enge sing several songs each episode. I am absolutely HOOKED. I react to Engelbert similar to how Momma bear is reacting. But I'm a 59-year-old straight male.🤔

Engelbert Humperdinck is a British singer, who in the 1960s was the resident singer at a Wimbledon (South London) venue. I used to visit the venue most weekends and we all knew that he had a very special singing voice, plus he was a very nice man, too. He and Tom Jones were great friends and both are (they are still singing when asked) tremendous singers.

I'm so glad you're introducing the music of Engelbert Humperdinck to your channel. He has one of the greatest male singing voices of all time. Engelbert has a 5 octave range. "Please Release Me" was his first major hit and the song that really launched his career. Great song. An interesting note is that Gordon Mills was his manager who also managed Tom Jones. 2 of my personal favorite Engelbert Humperdinck songs that I'd like for you to react to are "After The Lovin'" and "A Man Without Love" As the case with Tom Jones, he is in his 80's and still performing great concerts.
