Thanks for another burst of nostalgia from the UK (my mother was from England) in the 1960s, where I grew up from ages 7 in '64 to 18 in '75. Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck songs were all over TV and radio in England back then. As noted in my comment to your "Delilah" reaction just now, the story of "Green, Green Grass" is sung by a man on death row who's reminiscing about his youth just before being executed for murder ("For there's a guard and there's a sad, old padre...along that road I'll walk at daybreak...before they lay me...") Capital punishment (hanging) was officially abolished in the UK in 1969 after a 4-year suspension (according to my online research just now) but had been used less and less frequently anyway. I vaguely remember references to it in the news when I was a kid. Most Tom Jones songs are way more upbeat than this and "Delilah," but all of his music is great.

Oh my! I haven’t heard this song since I was a kid, maybe 50 years ago. I’m sure this was in my dad’s record collection, and I have a vague memory of him singing it as well (dad had a fine baritone voice, and did a bit of amateur musical theater). He is long gone now, so for me this has evoked memories of dad and his warm, rich singing voice. Thanks.

I love moms take on it. Also being a military brat I related the same way as her to this song. Barricks were often painted grey and had a guard at the door, most squadrons had a chaplain, priest, or padre who also went on patrols. Patrols often started at daybreak. This is sad as he dreamt of home, family, and his love then woke to the war, went on patrol and died, almost as if the dream had been an omen.

I was in a band and we used to cover this song. The bass player one night sang "and there's the old oak tree, the one I used to pee on..." we all lost it and couldn't do the rest of the song...only Tom Jones could sing this right and that is why it became a big hit. Yes, Tom's rendition is very emotional and touching. Appreciate the Viet Nam era interpretation and military's adaptation...I had forgotten that. However I hated tie a Yellow Ribbon 'young the Old Oak tree, a similar song only getting out of jail. It was a "happy happy" dumb song, and the military adapted that later during Desert Storm. Yuch! Hahaha

This song was not written for Tom. It is not about his childhood. It is not about Wales, although Wales has adopted it as their own. It was written by legendary Nashville songwriter Curly Putnam and it was a country hit for Porter Waggoner in 1965. Jerry Lee Lewis put it on an album and that’s where Tom discovered it and, in 1966, turned it into one of his biggest hits which he still performs today. You can interpret the song anyway you want to, but it’s about a prisoner on death row who is to be hanged for his unspecified crimes and how, on the eve of his death, his thoughts are of home. This is a different version of the song, from his hit TV show and it clearly depicts the true meaning of the song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hSajFnkUxQY.html

He has so many hits such as "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Delilah", "It's Not Unusual", "What's New Pussycat?", "She's a Lady" etc. He covers a lot of genres. Hi! "Green Green Grass of Home", written by Claude "Curly" Putman Jr, and first recorded by singer Johnny Darrel in 1965, is a country song made popular by Porter Wagoner the same year, when it reached No.4 on the Country chart. It was also recorded by Bobby Bare and by Jerry Lee Lewis. Tom Jones learned the song from Lewis version and, in 1966, he had a worldwide No.1 hit with it. Some other artists who has recorded the song. "Roger Miller", "Dean Martin", "Johnny Cash", "Joan Baez", "Frankie Laine", "Trini Lopez", "Elvis Presley", "Kenny Rogers", and many more. You might be confusing this song with Tie A Yellow Ribbon ('Round the Old Oak Tree), which is about a man returning from prison, but many people, including the Military, have adopted it as a song about a man coming home from war. Green Green Grass is definitely about a man in prison, who will be executed in the morning.

NOTE THAT IN OTHER FOREIGN LANGUAGES, THEY JUST DROP THAT PART THAT TALKS ABOUT BEING BURIED IN THE GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME. FOR EXAMPLE THE FRENCH VERSION JUST TALK ABOUT THE SOLDIER RETURNING HOME FROM THE WAR AND CONCLUDES THAT "C'EST BON D'OUVRIR LES MURS DE SA MAISON" WHICH MEANS "IT FEELS GOOD TO OPEN THE GATE OF HIS SWEET HOME AGAIN". SO THE FOREIGN VERSIONS COMPLETELY OMIT THE TRAGIC PART, THEY EXPRESS ONLY THE JOY OF A SOLDIER RETURNING BACK HOME. IN THAT REGARD, WHAT MOMMY EXPRESSED IS RIGHT.

Have you listened to his new album in his eighties. My favourites NO HOLE IN MY HEAD, and the must watch psychedelic photo and video montage REALITY TELEVISION BLUES which is a fast forward commentary on the development of modern media.
