DCFD uses opposite lanes all the time. Traffic can be so bad here that it's just necessary. Very well trained drivers. Hats of to all first responders (my uncle is retired FDNY). Most of the District's trucks have the old school revolving lights- love 'em!

I do not get the point of a fire lane because if we get a call we are not going to park right up against a building because it might collapse and hit a the truck. It is really used in my opinion for people to get out of the building to give them room to evacuate

The spinning thing on the front of the rig is called a Roto-ray, it is a group of three colored lights that are situated at rearview window level for automobiles and it shines into the vehicle to grab the drivers attention if they don't initially noticed the rig approaching from behind. They are very effective at night which is the main use for them. When it's spinning at top speed you definitely wouldn't want to attempt to touch it because the rate at which it spins will break your hand and leave you with serious injuries.

Kyle yeah, makes you wonder what he’d do if he actually caught a fire. Put the dang electronic on “wail” and don’t touch the Q or air horn unless you’ve got an intersection or traffic in front of you. And late at night, just growl the Q when you’re in residential areas.
