The second time you weighed the first piston.. the rings where on the frame of the scale that's why you got a different reading

If you're going to weigh piston assemblies 3 time then be sure to rotate it 120 degrees each time to get a correct average, also try and keep the rings, clips and pins over the centre of the piston

Good tip

Should I grind my piston ring to the right gap, and then balance the pistons? Seems like depending on how much each ring needs to be grinded to gap, it could alter the weight for that piston significantly.

Am really loving these series of videos. Gat my note books alla scribbled up with notes. I have my fingers crossed that these will keep coming until the build is complete. So much learn.

You didn't actually show the balancing of the crank, you just spoke of it. Is it balanced with counterweights on it, what rpm do they balance it at.
@tunedbyrabbid
@tunedbyrabbid 2 года назад
It's sent to a company with the machine required to do it.

So in short I can balance my pistons, rods rings / C-clips and grudging pins all together at home using some quality scales but I need to take my crank , flywheel and crank pulley to a shop to be properly balance ? Cheers ?

Pretty much

Shouldn't you also send the pistons, rods and bearings to the machine shop when balancing the crank, if I stand correctly the weight of those components should also be taken into consideration when balancing the crankshaft.

The crank shaft balance is on its centre of rotation. Only mass that rotates on the crank is required. The pistons and rods are not required to balance a crank assembly as their mass is not in a static position to the cranks centre line.

How repeatable are the readings you're getting from that rod balancing jig? Despite many tutorials, hours of videos watched, following as many carefully detailed instructions as I can I have yet to see anything reliable enough that I feel comfortable calling accurate. The scale is though. Through 8 rods, weighing gross weight each 10 times (to verify the scale) I don't seen more than a .2g variance.

Take multiple measurements and average them. It's perfectly possible that the sets you're buying are actually well balanced from the manufacturer already.

Should you install the bearings in the rods before balancing considering you are doing the same with including everything in the piston?
@tunedbyrabbid
@tunedbyrabbid 3 года назад
You can weigh the bearing and circlips together with the total mass to balance them even closer.

when weight the small end of the rod, if you don't measure it like how you measure on the big end, what happen if the small end all having same weight but the rod's middle part is heavy than others ? i would think measuring them like how you do with the big end would be most accurate ?
@tunedbyrabbid
@tunedbyrabbid 2 года назад
You measure one end and correct the big end then use total mass to correct for the rest of the rod.

I would wight all the parts separately and then put all the heavy rings with the lightest ones and then make changes from there if needed but your way would be much quicker lol the only reason I would do it my way to see if I would have to make any changes if that makes sense ;)

Depends on the order of things, if you've already assigned pistons based on wall clearance then already gapped the rings to that cylinder you don't want to mix them up. But I guess you could weigh everything before you get that far and match rings to piston weights then assign pistons and then gap rings then balance.

@@tunedbyrabbid hey bud if I ever want mine forged I will get you to do it if thats cool lol your a very long was from me though lol 😂 how long would it take you to forge a vectra vxr 57 plate just so I know roughly if I want it done as I would be coming from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
