This video demonstrates an in-flight engine failure on a PA44-180 Piper Seminole twin engine aircraft. This is part of the commercial multi-engine pilot training. The video shows a left engine failure followed by the standard procedures to identify, shut down and restart the engine in flight. Enjoy!
Footage was taken with a head-mounted Garmin Virb action camera.

Nice video !! Just wanted to point out, turns should not be made towards the inoperative engine. Right ? At least that's what I was told at ground school. Thanks fr the video!

My understanding is that it is 'unfavorable' to turn towards the dead engine but the aircraft doesnt know the difference as long as the rate of turn is the same. If this is a 2000 model the reason you had to bump the starter is because you were below 120KIAS.

@@robertgary3561yea but you still need that prop windmilling to air start. You could also get it windmilling around 100kts, don’t need to haul ass at 120 to start it

@@Falcon2.39-1 we just use the starter. Air start by windmilling only really works on small low compression engines

HI there, thanks for the nice video. But I'd love to correct something. At 3:13 you said "zero sideslip". You had sideslip going the entire procedure. May I ask, do you remember if you had rudder pedals fully deflected (all the way in)?

Yes, I'm quite surprised that instructor didn't instruct him to input more right rudder. His legs looked quite relaxed there and looking at his speed he was above vmca so the rudder couldnt have been fully deflected.

The ball should be slightly deflected towards the ground. Your center of thrust for the airplane as a whole is now asymmetric so the typical slip/skid indicator should not be kept centered.

Page 12-21 of the PHAK says " Without specific guidance for zero sideslip, a bank of 2° and one-third to one-half ball deflection on the slip/skid indicator is suggested."

So you don't lower the good engine... and turn 330 into the dead engine.. throw the book in the back seat and get your head outside the airplane. Step on the good engine... t 9 out of 10 that bitch ain't gonna restart...

Not checking the good engine temp and not using cowl flaps to cool the heads is wrong. On one engine you're already going to be late. Losing both engine you'll never come down.

Since nobody else is going to answer you, and leave you hanging for years without an answer, I'll step up. Yes, this is real flying, part of multi-engine training. It's done at a safe high up altitude with an emergency landing location already picked out before the maneuver is done.
