Today I change the oil and filter on my Royal Enfield Himalayan. I show step by step how to drain as much oil as possible from the bike including out of pipes and pump before replacing with 15w 50 Fully Synthetic Smith Allan oil.
On my channel I do all things moto vlog on my adventure motorcycle around Scotland and the UK visiting interesting historic places. I also maintenance on the bike, installs and modifications, tips and tricks for adventure riders and motorcycle gear reviews.

Another great video…. especially cleaning out the blind holes on the filter side with a cotton bud. If you get too much old oil in there when draining you can end up with hydrolic lock that can see you stripping the threads…. An important simple addition task, good you included . Enjoy the trip north ( or the trip back as you’ll be there already for sure. )

Thanks Nev. I filmed this Christmas eve prior to riding up boxing day. I'm now in Bulgaria mate. On the ride up to Argyll I hit a deer just south of Inveraray. Heavy snowfall, wind usual. Kept the bike up on 2 wheels bit of a tank slap. Poor deer didn't come off too well. Luckily I hit it on the hind quarter so spun it out. Might have been a different story if I hit it mid section.

If you leave the bike on it's side stand, you don't have to bother with the cardboard as the draining oil will miss everthing and go straight into the drain pan. You might get a slight drip when you remove the filter screen housing but its easily mopped up with a paper towel. However, you do need the machine on it's centre stand when you remove the filter plate on the otherside of the bike.

I really enjoyed the attemp to get all the old oil out. Noticed that after adding the clear oil the "oild level viewer's" oil looked light and clean. But after adding more and cranking the oil was again dark. This implies that "all" the old was not drained. REALLY wished they was a GOOD way to fully drain SO THAT after adding the clean/clean oild and running the oild, it would look clean like in my car oil changes.

On my air cooled bikes (H-D and BMW), I only use 20-50 Amsoil and Wix filters. Amsoil severe gear in the trans, and primary fluid in primary of the Harleys. The noticeable difference over just about anything else is astonishing. Michelin tires and NGK iridium plugs.

I used Smith & Allen fully Synthetic for years. Using f/syn i found the engine sounds much quieter also the engine runs cooler. My Himmie took 1.5 and a dibble oil. Happy new year Martin. Looking forward to more tours

Yip Smith and Allan sensibly priced quality lubricant. Use it for all my gearboxes and car. Engine oil not ideal for my 4 stroke dinosaurs though so use Valvoline 20w/50 with high zinc content. All my MZs use their fully synthetic 2 stroke though which is very reasonably priced. I usually soak the new filter in fresh oil before fitting as every moment less starving the engine on initial start up is precious. Keep up the good work.

If it works fine I will definitely get the smith and Allen oil... Just wanted to be sure before I buy some... Any feedback on the oil appreciated 🙏👍

Hi Martin , what can i say ... on the money as always 👌As per Iain's comment the fully syn is a wise move and he answered my question , it makes the motor quieter . I'll be doing the same as yourself when the time comes , every 3000 and maybe the drain gauze every alternate change. Have a Happy New Year with many hours of trouble free riding 👍
@WeeJaunt
@WeeJaunt 2 года назад
Thanks as always mate. Aye there's nothing wrong with putting semi synth in the Himalayan but a fully synthetic oil is always going to be an upgrade. It definitely makes a difference in vibration and gear changes on the bike. At least that's how it "feels" to me. Other people might have a different experience.

Hi mate it depends on how confident you are with spanners. Personally I'd strip it but tbh it will probably be fine with a decent flush Just remember that there will still be fluid in the pipes and pump even if you let it drain all day you will see in this video how much still comes out when I start the bike dry.

Hello ,thanks for the reply. I'd watched that video and used that trick to flush with some cheap oil ,but in the end decided to take off both covers and clean out with tooth brush and kero,which seemed to work.oil all clear no more white specks and streaks.ill pay more attention to the depth of the water from now on cheers,tim

I would agree if it was running on no oil however every single metal component inside the engine is still coated in a fine layer of oil. A five second turnover on a still hot engine to get more crud out of the pump will do no harm.
