Here is another edition of Engines of Amtrak. The Budd Metroliner. We have a unique EMU with a good amount of history and one long lasting life span all the way up to present day. The Metroliner originated out of a mechanically failed design known as the Pioneer III and had a bumpy start with multiple problems due to the Westinghouse powered traction motors, insufficient transformer, and bouncing pantographs. On the other hand, the General Electric traction motor equipped Metroliners had a smoother run. The Metroliners proved to be very versatile and were a general success with a career stretching into the 1980s. Unfortunately, the Metroliners age had caught up to them by that point and became incredibly unreliable. However, Amtrak rebuilt numerous Metroliner EMUs into cab cars for push pull and shuttle service and many former Metroliner EMU's survive today roaming the rails as cab cars. But that's only a fraction of the information contained in this video. Find out more information about the Budd Metroliners in this edition of Engines of Amtrak. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!
