Some of those shots from Gower were ridiculous - effortless timing and just caressed to the boundary. This was before outfields had got faster due to excellent drainage and preparation, when the boundaries went all the way to the fence and before the bat technology of today.
Kaleidoscope. Kaleidoscope.....Kaleidoscope is a 1966 movie starring a young Warren Beatty and the gorgeous Susannah York. Its actually a very good movie. What has it got to do with this test match? Well on this particular Monday around 6pm and Richard Ellison steaming in and the Birmingham crowd at F14 fighter jet decibel levels, the bbc decided that we'd had quite enough cricket for the day thank you very much. They had a 20 year old film on their schedule and by jingo they were going to show it come what may. Never mind that Australia were rocking at 30 for 2 and the most crucial 30 minutes of the 85 ashes series was about to commence. It was time for Kaleidoscope. Great upload by the way 👏

In the 1986 Wisden - in a memorable article for me - editor John Woodcock said that he doubted whether the 1985 Australians would have finished in the first four in the County Championship. Given that that very same John Woodcock had said in his Notes by the Editor the previous year that “the standard of English batsmanship can seldom if ever have been so low”, it is easy to conclude that the 1985 Australians were the worst Australian side to ever tour England. Further evidence in support of this conclusion can be seen in that England won only one of 29 home Tests in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989 combined - yet beat this Australian team three times. At times I have concluded that the 1985 Australians must have been the worst touring team from an established Test nation since the 1962 Pakistanis lost 0-4 and only once bowled England out for under 400.
At 0:29, it’s odd the the bowling analysis looked like McDermott having bowled 18 overs, not 13 as it is shown in the clearer images of this day’s episode.
Jeff Thomson bowling no more than fast medium and with no slips in place is a sad sight to see. He was past his best and this was a tour of England too far.
