Thrand in collaboration with Chris Sizemore and Shawn Kreger test an English longsword technique called the Rownde or Round form the Ledall Roll a longsword fencing manual from 1535 and 1550 Tudor Period England. The Manual is assumed to be written by J Ledall,.The only fencer with the name J. Ledall currently known to be active in Britain in this time period was John Ledall/Ledale (ca.1515-1582), a British merchant born in York, England, between 1513 and 1518 and awarded Freedom of the City of York in 1529 or 1530. The only son of a glover, Ledall was himself a merchant and seems to have been quite wealthy; he was also a prominent member of the Guild of Corpus Christi, which he joined with his wife Elizabeth Vavasour in 1533. In 1547, Ledall was awarded the title Chamberlain of York, which indicates that he must have been a bridge-master at some point before that time. He died in 1582 and was buried at St. John's Chapel Micklegate. Thrand does this testing on an analog Gel head and tatami.

Always appreciate the authenticity of your channel. Your backyard testing always has me clicking over the the in front of the camera “talking” videos most others do in this genre. Not that those are bad or not entertaining, I just like seeing the techniques instead of just talking about them

This technique is almost exactly Meyer's Rosen, or to be more specific, the first variation that is nice and simple. You can insert Winden/Zwerchhau as the third blow, and there are many more, fancier variations. It's one of the somewhat rare techniques that discusses how to chain several distinct blows from wide measure, so a lot of systems that don't explicitly have it do have it implicitly. Fiore's initial technique from wide measure/zhogo largo may also talk about this as an option you can do from it.
@grandmeleehistoricalfencin3400
Thank you for bringing this up. Some of the tactics s And techs are very simular to Meyer. That was also a point I told thrand about, as far giving the way I do the round more credit. As it seemed to be very to some of meyers techs
@MartinGreywolf
@MartinGreywolf 5 лет назад
@@grandmeleehistoricalfencin3400 If you're looking for more examples of techniqeus like this, I'd recommend looking at European post-renaissance stuff, as well as Asian martial arts. Thing is, the unusual thing about Meyer's Rosen is that it shows you how to win Zufechten by chaining ordinary blows, in this case two oberhaus, or oberhau and mittlehau. This kind of thing, that is long work in Zufechten/giocco largo/(insert your name for we are far away and want to stab the other guy), is rarely discussed in MAs from medieval and renaissance Europe. Look at escrima for ten minutes, however, and you'll see them everywhere in drills - especially paired with abeniko, which is like a Zwerchhau, which starts to again look very much like Rosen.
@grandmeleehistoricalfencin3400
@@MartinGreywolf thank you the input. I had no clue about the techs being simular till I talked to a friend that follows and trains in Meyers system. And the version of this that thrand shows is the basic concept for this attack. And your 100% right that you can set it up with those types of strikes. Me and thrand talked in length about how the round can be used and applied. This was just the most simple and direct application to prove it would work via a test cutting on the ballistic head. But you have got me wanting to look to more sources then i had thought of so thank you and thank you for your input

The move shown here in this video suggested to be a rownde, many practicing ELS call "Dragon's tayle", or at least seems akin to. The move argued against in this video of being the rownde I've seen most RSL schools do, but as opposed to it being done in a "circle" overhead (the reason it's argued against in this video as being impractical), it's often performed as a horizontal left-right windscreen wiper motion over head like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4kSif7pjBic.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gZh28JXYHjY.html Though it could be wrong of course. But it's going by the premise that the move shown in this video is already described in the manuals under a different name, meaning rowndes could be something else entirely, whether they be what was shown in the videos I linked or something else. Unless of course you have also made a distinction between your interpretation of rownde and dragon's tayle?

This is just a basic quarter followed by another quarter on the same side. This is not a distinct nor unique technique that I would classify as a round.

I would think that the false edge zwerchhau cut was intentionally less powerful. When used in a dueling context that would be a potentially nonlethal blow to the brow and face that would render the opponent unable to continue due to the amount of blood that would get in their eyes.

Excellent video as always Thrand. That blade looks to have a great cross sectional geometry to cut so cleanly. I reckon it would do just as or nearly as well even with less of an edge, ei. after prolonged or multiple engagements.

Very strange video that is all over the place, with jumps from talking about the sword, to side projects, to sword technique without tying those things together. Really disorienting. The cut at 11:53 doesn't look like it cuts at all, but simply cracks the "skull" so that it fractures around. The sword even passes above the cut-line. The paper cuts looked nice though. Also the auto adjusting mic is a bit annoying. It sounds like it automatically ups the gain when you are not talking and then lowers when you are. Again really disorienting.
