10 best narco-corridos for understanding Mexico's criminal insurgency, track 1/10. Los Alameños de la Sierra - "La Talla".
I DO NOT support organized crime or drug-related violence, nor do I condone what these songs talk about. This project is purely educational and complementary to my undergrad thesis at CSU Pomona, meant to further knowledge and understanding of the civil war in Mexico (the Mexican drug war).
Narco-corridos are not simply songs about drug-related war violence in Mexico, but also a method for propaganda, political discourse, and military code. Just as students in a history or political science class read and analyze primary texts, this project has made these war songs available to be analyzed as primary sources.
These songs have been translated into English by me. Some of the English lyrics in the video are direct translations of the easily available original Spanish lyrics. Other parts are as close to the idea as possible, as the literal meanings are lost in translation. Some other sections are my best guess since some of these songs have no lyrics available online, so I had to play by ear when translating.
For more information on narco-corridos as war dispatches and political discourse, see John P. Sullivan's paper "Criminal Insurgency: Narcocultura, Social Banditry, and Information Operations".
