Felt like I was sitting on the porch with mamaw & papaw helping shuck peas. So nice to learn at the feet of elders. Thanks for showing the difference between what to pick for eating and seeding. Also, the last tip for seeds that will yield sweet veggies. I love learning those kinds of tips & knowledge. That knowledge comes from experience; so valuable. Thanks, y'all.

We grew English peas about 3 years ago. The kids "helped" shell peas and ate most of them before I ever saw them because they were so sweet. Really enjoyed growing those.

This was very helpful video, This is only my 2nd year of home gardening, and this yr I got some Broad beans ( here in the UK ) was thrilled when they started to grow, but was not sure when to pick, now I only have 3 plants in total... but thanks to your video my peas look ready to be picked....... I remember shelling peas when I was a little girl with my mom, brought back a lot of forgotten memories.... Thanks you guys

Y'all just taught me A LOT! Not just about peas and corn but about my marriage and it's a lesson I needed. My husband drives me nuts with some things cause he's like Danny. LOL (Love you bunches tho 😆) If something isn't perfectly the way he thought it should be he sees it as failure or no good. I'm the opposite. I see "something is better than nothing." Obviously if it's something we're growing and it doesn't work well enough to be viable for work and expense I won't do it again but I'm still happy with small successes. I love how you guys don't get aggravated with each other's views and just giggle and move on. I'm gonna take on that attitude. I'm not going to see it as him always being a "negative Nancy," and just see it for what it is...a different prospective. You guys are just wonderful. Thank you for all you do. Deep South Homestead I agree totally. Watching you guys made ME see how wrong I'd been. I've been taking it personally and it's not. It's really not. It's literally just a different view point. When do y’all plant your peas I planted in October 2018 and mine have flourished beyond belief in north Florida, the whole hand shelling thing I love because it makes you slow down and realize how truly blessed we are.

I grew up going to you-pick farms to pick peas, butter beans, crowders, etc. just across the border from Jacksonville FL to GA. The advice you are giving regarding the stages and when to pick is what I learned from my aunt who used to take us. Thank you for this information, hopefully it will benefit others.

I remember hulling bushels of Peas as a child. I thought it would never end, but somehow the bottom of the basket always came, for which I was always very thankful.

If you're going to freeze the peas you can blanch in the shells which makes them much easier to shell.

I watched from the beginning all the way to the end.. So interesting. When I was young my parents planted both of our fields with gardens it was up to us kids to do our chores then head to the garden & weed. I can remember picking Mom's English Peas & like you say when you pull to hard it rips the plants. Oh my goodness you would of think Mother was going to lose it... I was taught at early age how to pick veggies from the gardens.. Mother & I would do all the persevering on it. Wonderful Memories.. thank you for the awesome tips on the English Peas... :)

Great video. When my one son was a toddler he loved to pick and eat peas right off the vine. Had to keep an eye on him so all my vines didn't wind up broken.

I like your double row...I do that with green beans too. I even use to plant them in large blocks, sit on a stool and pick all around ya then move your stool...lot of work for something I'm not that crazy about...Love seeing Miss Wanda doing well...

Same type weather happened here in Michigan….didnt get my garden in til the second week in june as frost warnings were almost three times a week til then.. my peppers havent done well this year, so disappointed as they are my favorite …i have about a thirty foot row of peas for the first time.

Since they have shallow root systems, how well would they do in raised beds Danny? You might just set some teepee sticks in a raised bed & have better control on the mildew (also easier to harvest). Also, I'm interested in know what kind of plants you have on the outer rows...is that lemongrass? :)

I'm really loving your posts on peas. It's interesting to see how the same crop is grown in different places, and the problems we face to get a decent crop. Your peas look like a dwarf variety, and they have smaller pods than our ones. We usually have 6 - 10 peas per pod, and the plants grow 8ft high. You have far more sunshine than we get, with a longer season, but we don't have the humidity. We rarely have really dry conditions either, so watering isn't so important. I couldn't plant outside before April, till the risk of late frost's has gone, and the last pick would be late September, but that's only because we have early/late varieties that we plant. Our biggest threats are Pea Moth and Pigeons, not mildew. I really marvel at God's creation, and the way he gives us what we need to survive. All we need is a little hard work and the sweat of our brow. God Bless 👍

Thanks for all the information. I tend to wait to long to pick. I notice you don't blanch yours. I don't like to blanch mine either when freezing them. That's if my family doesn't get to them first. Our weather has been back and forth too.

Thank you for info. I'm growing Little Marvel peas. Last year, something ate the seedlings while still very small. This year I covered them and just this week saw pods. When I buy peas to eat at the store, I prefer early or petite peas, because they're less sweet. Do you know what kind of seed peas I should buy to grow the less sweet ones? And are they still considered English peas?

How do I know if a pea is an english pea? Last year I grew Burpee Sugar Daddy. This year I purchased Burpee Oregon Sugar Pod II. Which now looking at the package look like a stir-fry type pea and not a canning or freezing type pea. I'm in northeast NY and planting zone 5a so haven't planted any peas yet if I should get a different variety. Thank you.

Can’t you trim the leaves off the bottom of the plant to allow air flow from the very beginning, to ward off disease?

Luckily, I planted my peas in January and got 2 weeks picking. I have already had to pull them up because of powdery mildew. It had gotten so thick on them that it was getting on the peas and I couldn't stand how they felt. I didn't get any powdery mildew last year. I planted Little Marvel last year. But their bush habit was messy and inconvenient. I run my thumb down the pea pod and if I can feel the definite pea ridges, I pick them. The puffy ones don't have the ridges. Were yours little marvel?

I'm in Houston. I've struggled with English peas for the last 4 years. I sow middle Feb and I have till about mid April till the heat kills 'em off. When do you sow?

i think the diference is wanda leans more to a hunter gatherer and danny leans more towards the farmer allthough he is a very good hunter ...when i go shrooming if i come back with 1 mushroom or a gunny sack full im happy either way the only crop that i grow if it fails i thing think of it as a failer is tomatoes ...gottsta have lots of maters

We have 6 rows about 60 feet long. If they produce well, they will feed us for a year. We like to can 60 pints if possible. That is 2 a week.

Doesn't planting them so close together promote the mildew? If you spaced all the rows wouldn't that help promote airflow? And that's a very low growing variety have you tried growing them on arches, a taller plant?

Logans Homestead Yes we have mole crickets.I have learned to take when i water the garden or right after a rain to sit and watch thats when they come out to tunnel.and when i see them i grab them by hand while they are tunneling.Its the only way ive found to get rid of them without chemicals.I know it sounds wierd but i get them that way.Thanks
