I have a rescue Setter I am in the process of training post Derby fun. I guess it wasn't the goal to have Covey broke to wing and shot? I am starting the whoa post first and then I'll pick up the E collar you recommend for for recalls and for her flank.

I had a bird hunting english setter dog for 10 years. We call them a "Llewellyn" here in Ireland also. Lovely nature and strong with the family but for the first 2 seasons he was as mad as a hatter in the field... Racing ahead, chasing hares and flushing pheasants 300 yards out in front..i had no control, clearly. I managed to shoot some birds over him by luck more that by any great contribution he made. However, on the third season he became very steady on point over pheasant and woodcock. By the fourth season he showed me a thing or two, with a keen nose, pointing often 50 yards or more away from a bird in cover. At the end of that season i dropped a mallard dead on the river, who began to drift slowly away. I didn't have my lab retriever with me, but guess what.... With little coaxing my llewellyn swam out and retrieved the duck. From that day and for the next six years he retrieved most of my game. He was the boss when we hunted together. We were a great team and I trusted that dog to know his job... And he did... splendidly so

I can't tell what kind of birds your using. My llew hates carrying pigeons and usually holds by just a wing...a quail and he gallops back with a full grip...I think he feels pigeons are beneath his dignity

What does splashing her on the back of the head with a bottle of water do what is the purpose of that? Is that supposed to desensitize her to sticking her head in water to grab a bird

First time bird dog owner here. Was curious why you wet her ears first? Does it help with scent? Never seen someone do that before. Thanks for the content.

My gsp doesn't stop chewing on birds while asked for retrivieng often runs away any recommendations how to stop it, he is 5 months old

Is the game damaged, is the key question? You could try dummy practice... Barbed wire in the dummy. Then a long break from retreieving. Maybe a bit cruel, but i can recommend it if the dog is damaging game. I have never had to do it, though.

Just old the start any amount of training! Typically we would recommend to begin around 6-12 months of age for more formal training!

A poor completion and it took you six months..... The dog's actions showed concern, displayed by low enthusiasm. Why did you say Whoa when the dog was already in Whoa position. I would never allow you to train a dog of mine or ask for advice.
@karasmidt2813

How would you do this differently?
@DrDaleHubbardPhD
@DrDaleHubbardPhD 2 года назад
@@karasmidt2813 first of all not startle a dog (that is damaged) with a water bottle. I would never collar condition this dog because it was ultra sensitive when Ethan first obtained the dog. Primarily positive training and moving to a Premack Principle to complete the dog. I know circumstances beyond what is shown in the video that I would cross an ethical line by making it public.
