I'm a 2 and a mom and those tips are hard! Especially the rescuing one.. I have a such a hard time with discernment on when it's truly time to rescue and when I need to let them do it on their own. Argghhh growth is not fun but I suppose necessary LOL
It's funny b/c I'm a 2 parents of a 6 (we think) but she has rarely taken advantage of me nor has she asked me to rescue her. I have offered occasionally (I'm good at this boundary b/c of my own upbringing) but she typically turns me down and takes care of it herself.
I am currently coaching a type 2 mom who's child came home from school one day and said "I want my teacher to be my mom because she's nice." Wow! Talk about feelings of rejection for this 2 mom! I love this tool that is helping me navigate coaching my clients through their parenting struggles.

My Mother in law is a 2 and does all of these things (smothers, overly permissive, has an intrusive need of being needed, rescues her kids before they can make mistakes, only has hobbies that revolve around her kids like moms group, etc.). My father in law is a 9. Together they are overly permissive with their kids. One has very high functioning autism, and gets no discipline when he hits his sister. I am a behavior therapist, so this is all very apparent and frustrating for me to watch. Is there a way that I could gently speak with her about these things without threatening her security in my love for her? We are very close (I’ve known her since I was 15) and these things have been increasingly damaging to her kids relationships with her. I feel like we need to talk about it but she doesn’t receive these things well.
Also I forgot to add that it has been damaging for me to watch these things unfold. I even see it in how she treats my husband (smothers HARD, rescues him even though he is an adult, and is very prideful of him and how he makes her appear to others). So this has been frustrating for me as well... not just for her kids who currently live with her.
Sounds like she's a 'Covert Narcissist' From what I've read, the recommendation seems to be 'Run in the opposite direction'. Do you have kids? They need to be protected from her All the best to you!
