I’ve always had an strong pull with Enos, because of my relationship with the members of the church at a young age of 10 years I was baptized, lost and alone my family was very dysfunctional and I needed constancy, I smelled of cigarettes and booz I’m sure , but the members children literally drove me away, finally at the age of 28, I read the Book of Mormon and knew that Enos and I were looking for “Our Way To God” so I started praying, I prayed and fasted, and I knew that his example declared to me that I was worthy to be NOW A CONVERTED MEMBER AT AGE 28…and that I was worthy to belong to My Saviors church, I became converted through that conversion I declared to God and My Savior that no Person would Ever Stop me from enjoying my Membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ever again.

I’m so glad that you found your way home. I wish you could have had a different experience but I am SURE that Heavenly Father will work these things for your good. I am also one who was baptized young and needed to find my way back. I am now a powerful example of the cleansing and healing power of our Savior’s atonement and continued help. You are that person now. By relying upon the grace of Jesus Christ you are also a powerful example. Through your negative experience you will continue to have a positive impact on those around you.

My father had an interesting perspective of Enos on his knees. Yes, Enos knelt down, but it doesn't say he was on his knees ALL day. What do we do? We kneel in the morning, praying over what is bothering us. Then get up off our knees and go about our day. We go to work, to our job, taking care of business, taking kids to soccer practice, hunting beasts in the forests, but all along we have this heavy prayer in our hearts, crying unto the Lord all the day long. And when night comes, we kneel again, and still raise our voice high. Many times I have received answers as I was going about my responsibilities of the day, but with a prayer in my heart.

Brother Stringham, this is so eloquently written. Yes, offer up your voice to the Lord then get to work. For this slightly hyper, definitely distracted lady that’s the best way to pray.

I agree, Enos wrote his impressions of that day, and we can do as he did, take those pray full moments on our knees, yet Rise with that same prayer full feeling in our hearts All day!

When you talked about your wrestling son, my grandpa Mickey Hart really did that! He was a new college student at the Chicago Music College, probably 1930’s. He went through the whole dorm and put tracts about Joseph Smith in every common room. The Resident Assistant gathered them all and told Mickey he could not put those out. Mickey said, “How about I wrestle you for it. If I win, they start all year. If I lose, I won’t put them out.” They wrestled and Mickey won! 😂 He spent his whole life teaching people the gospel ❤

“We work ourselves into a frenzy trying to figure out exactly how God is going to work everything out.” And “God forgives.” These two statements sparked a random thought that is seemingly unrelated but, I think, an important part of the plan to understand. One of the ways we “practice” celestial life is by forgiving. The more I forgive the closer I become to my Heavenly Family. An added benefit is that I learn how possible it is for ME to be forgiven. Another way to say this is we learn grace for grace. By extending grace to others- forgiving- I receive grace- forgiveness and increased capacity to stay on the covenant path.

I love that thought, by Brother Smith, "He says to us, "I'm that good, I can overcome your parenting to your children!" 😅🤣🥰 I think most of my deepest wrestling prayers have been to overcome my parenting. I think there's a scripture in the Bible, don't let your anger tear down the very walls you've labored so hard to build. Doh! Why am I that woman at times? I love too that Brother Dirkmaat brings out that Enos then is completely relieved in his wrestle, by our Lord, "Our delightful forgiver" 🤗-Thank you, Emmy Gay

I really appreciate Dr. Gerrit's comments near the beginning about the struggles of trying to encourage teenagers to learn/listen/build their testimonies. The reminder that prophets even struggled with teaching their own children. We know this by reading the scriptures in a number of places. But as a convert that's a single mom, trying to have scripture time or trying to encourage my kids to go to church or youth activities is super hard most of the time. These reminders that we are not alone are so lifting, so encouraging. Let's all keep going and trying. Thank you. 💙

I LOVED Elder Dushku's talk in this last Conference "Pillars and Rays" because not all of us have an Enos or Joseph Smith moment with a big answer from the Lord, but we often get rays here and there of confirmations of truth that are so subtle we might miss them, but they lead to our testimonies.

The prophet taught us to learn to receive personal revelation. If he advises us to do some temporal thing and we pray about it but the Spirit tells us not to do it, we are following the prophet by seeking and following instruction from the Spirit.

It is imperative that each of us gain a remission of sins like enos, and being sanctified by the baptism of fire so that the spirit will always be with us and we can come closer to God. 3 nephi 9:20 seems to be the best answer to how we must approach him, out of the mouth of Jesus himself.

When you compared Joseph's vision to Enos, wondering how Joseph's felt - I thought - well it certainly reinforced the go-to-the-woods-to-pray. I am glad he and Oliver Cowdery did that and received Arronic priesthood and baptism!! thankZ

Brethren, I appreciate greatly what you share. I was surprised in your discussion of Omni v 17. All the discussion on the importance of records was with the language and how without records it had become corrupted and they couldn't understand each other. All languages change and evolve over time. The heart of this verse is the statement "...and they denied the being of their Creator." The Mulekites had become atheists!!! This is the most important reason for the records and scriptures.

I am not sure Enos wasn't converted per se before he kneeled down to pray. I personally feel like he may have been more like Spencer W. Kimball when he was called to be an apostle. If you read President Kimball's account of his wrestle before the Lord as he got ready to accept that apostolic calling, you will probably think of Enos's wrestle before the Lord. I think every newly-called apostle/prophet has that kind of wrestle as he approaches the things that will be expected of him.

Hi Hank and John, I am writing from Fort Collins, Colorado. Hank, I am good friends with your niece and nephew here at CSU! I have had a question about Enos that I was hoping would get answered here, but it didn't get specifically addressed, so I thought I'd shoot it out there: Enos 1: 25 says that Enos reports 179 years since Lehi left Jerusalem. By my calculations, either Enos lived to be a lot older than most other BoM prophets, or maybe Jacob was really old when he had Enos. I even read a couple people online say there may have been a skipped generation with two Enos's. (The Enos writing the book of Enos never says directly that Jacob was his father). The last exact date given (that I found) was Jacob 1:1, which was 55 years since Lehi left Jerusalem. Usually the BoM timeline is so airtight, but this feels like there is something missing. Do you have any insight on this? It's not a spiritual question, and the answer certainly doesn't rock my testimony, but I think it would be fascinating to know. Thank you for all you do!

There is nothing in the text that says that this is “Enos’s Conversion”. It makes interesting conversation and makes it easy to make points in classes but this tradition is not scriptural. I firmly believe that Enos was a strong and faithful leader. Those who are strong in faith are often the ones who feel their weaknesses the most and feel the need for repentance and forgiveness the most. Even their littlest faults and “sins” bear heavily on them. They are the ones most likely to have the faith and desire to go pray all day and night pleading with the Lord. As an extreme example think of Pres. Kimball’s story of being called to be an apostle. He spent days praying and repenting and going to everyone he may have offended in life to apologize and ask forgiveness. This is the Enos I see in the scriptures. This is not a conversion story but a story of faith and righteous desire. It’s a great story and one I use as a type for my own life for when I need an answer or blessing. I look at Enos’s example and read this chapter.

Why don't we teach remission of sins in the church anymore? It is clear from scripture and from Boyd K. Packer, for one, that a remission of sin is received through the baptism of fire and the holy ghost. That is what Enos was seeking; he was NOT seeking forgiveness of his sins - He is a prophet and a spiritual leader of the people. As he says in verse 2, that is the whole point of his story!
