Many solar customers think their system will work in a power outage, and unfortunately, that wasn’t true until the revolutionary IQ8 Microinverter. See a lab demonstration of how a Sunlight Backup system handles high energy demand, and even cloud cover, with more intelligence than ever.

Agreed. For the portion of the population that's fed up with 'flashy' bravado of a certain other big-name solar company, these videos (of nerds talking about nerd stuff and demonstrating how stuff works in an actual lab designed to test said-nerd stuff) are actually refreshing.

Hello from a beginner. This is interesting to learn a battery is not necessary here. Friendly suggestion: could you do a brief video on how a DIYr might piece together a small system, as you will be selling these? Or are they part of a bigger package a homeowner must buy? I know you do home installations, but will people be able to purchase independently? How does it work? The more you can educate people the more you could sell. Thanks for your consideration.

Check Pacific Sun Tech video, they will compare the 4 different systems. It looks like there is only 2 additional device you need to add (IQ System controller 2 and essential load solution). The installation should be similar but I guess the Solar companies who order first will get it before the general public.
@zacharyunson9660
@zacharyunson9660 2 года назад
Distributors typically have deals with manufacturers to prevent independent purchasing. You would likely have to purchase from a local solar company or possibly a distributor. The iq8s have been given priority to certain companies and aren’t at full scale production

Off Grid Garage, Digital Mermaid, DIY Solar with Will Prowse, Bobby's Solar Homestead, Lithium Solar, DavidPoz. These are my favorites and I also have a couple of videos posted on YT myself. Hope this helps.

ok questions.... it seems you are saying that these new microinverters can operate as backup power, for when the grid goes down, but only when the sun is shining (it will deliver AC power directly to loads). my questions --- 1) if the grid is down and there is nowhere (no charge controller or battery) to put the energy (unless there are adequate loads calling for power) where does the extra power go? 2) does this comply with grid shutdown requirements? How are you isolating the power from the grid so you don't feed power back out? 3) do you need a dedicated sub panel for vital loads, or does this just feed the entire house when the power goes down?

Great video and great feature....But my understanding is that some additional components are required over and above the normal solar installation for this "Sunlight backup" solution to work, right? It would be nice to understand what those additional components are and roughly how much more it will cost to purchase/install the additional components AND if a user starts with this "Sunlight backup" solution and later decide to add a EnPhase battery are those additional components that were purchased for this Sunlight backup solution simply "throwaway"? Or are they necessary as part of a backup solution (i.e., used with battery backup solution.). Also, is there a risk during "brown out" that you could damage any appliances during these brown outs. And even if there is a theoretical possibility of causing damage is there a simple way to mitigate that potential (e.g., plug in devices you plan to power into a power strip with built in surge protector?).
@zumbatan550

Your questions are my concerns. Guess we need to throw away the AC Disconnect if you upgrade from Solar only to Sunlight Backup and the throw away the two load controllers, load centers when you upgrade from sunlight to full battery backup! Why can't they incorporate the load control into the System Controller 2?

I had a rep at my house today going over some of the financial details as we prepare for a large (~17kW) array w/ one 10kWh battery. We're an all electric contemporary house out in the country. Discussing that very thing he told me the combiner (IIRC) has four 20A circuit breakers. So if that's all you need powered that would be enough. I have a 220V water well pump. I will need a subpanel.

explain inrush current is from inductive component of impedence within an inductive motor. in the vaccum. Inverter has to adjust phase angle to the complex conjugate in order to maintain maximum power transfer.

That is one really great stability algorithm! Makes my house seem like its on a 'weak grid'. If everyone used enphase instead of grid following we would have fewer datacenters in the world running pointless algorithms.

I hate to be a pessimist but the long wait sort of becomes all sizzle no steak. What exactly does the IQ8 do that the sunny boy inverters with backup power built-in don't? Without all the additional cost? The concept, while intriguing is a misnomer due to the fact all the additional hardware that one Hass to buy sending the price through the roof.
@mattbrew11
@mattbrew11 2 года назад
Well you’re definitely a pessimist. Enphase is a superior inverter and will make much more energy during its expected 30+ year life, especially if the panels aren’t all facing the same direction
@jamesnesran2348
@jamesnesran2348 2 года назад
I think the sunny boy only alots up to ~5 kW (dont quote me) during grid down mode. So not enough to power your house most likely. I think, in theory, the IQ8 gives you whatever amount your panels can produce.

@stephensonjoe
@stephensonjoe 2 года назад
He probably has a 3.5ish kW system (10) 350W panels. The 1000W piece is only stating that it’s a sunny day and 1000W/ square meter is what you can expect during full sun. An 18kW system is super big, and can only be hooked up via “line side tap” in most situations. You need to speak with a local contractor to see what size system works for your home and needs

So important question. Can the previous generation use this like 7a or is it more the IQ load controller. And if a 7 series needs a firmware update to work as a sunlight backup.
@zacharyunson9660
@zacharyunson9660 2 года назад
Main difference between the 8s and the 7s is a firmware update. There are some other subtle differences regarding the electrical specs but major change is the firmware. 7s most likely won’t ever receive this because it won’t encourage new sales to the 8s
