It gets that sound from a combination of digital isolators and analog filters, if you like this there's some other machines that you might like as well The Cummer but one, sequential circuits prophet vs , prophet 2000 ,ensoniq ASR 10 , The oberhiem DPX one single player , which basically is an immune system simulator to rackmount minus the sampling option but their software you can use to do your sampling with, also the David Smith evolve, kawi made one to the k3
I have a ppg wave and the esq 1 sq80 are the closest sounding thing I've ever heard , it's a shame the architecture was not a little more flexible when they built it is because we're not seeing much in the way of retrofit kits for it like we are for some of the other machines, sits beautifully with my ppg wave 2.2 and prophet vs
I don't own an ESQ-1, but I'm glad I've watched! It gave me insight on how a small, seemingly boring, sequence becomes a powerful backing for a lead. I'm fairly new into the world of music making, so tips like these are very valuable to me. I often over-complicate these kind of things. I own a Novation Circuit, to which this can be applied with ease and use another synth (or my Impulse, as Circuit has two synth engines) for the lead. Thanks, Todd!
Without external equipment is there any way to add swing to the sequencer? That's has always been the downfall of this sequencer and I have not been able to find an internal work around so if you have any tips you could share that would rock!
What is the advantage of using an onboard sequencer like this versus just recording the MIDI notes in a DAW? Is there any reason to do this besides it being fun to use an old interface and to get away from the DAW? I've always avoided onboard sequencers on all the stuff I have cause I just don't really see the point to it. Honest question!
You don’t get many advantages in terms of tech. It’s about exploring old workflow. Sometimes those workflows can push toward specific classic sounds and styles.
@@toddsmithmusic3172 That makes sense... lets say you usually do just record to a DAW, and then made a sequence on the ESQ-1, I feel like everything would then have to revolve around the ESQ-1 and would just have to record all audio, am I dumb? How would you adjust the workflow from there? Hope its not an annoying question :)
@@toddsmithmusic3172 It works just need to set "slave" for the R5 and its internal sync to MIDI and thats it, pretty simple and they sound great for italo disco together !
