He's not a hero or a villain. He is a man of God, while his methods are questionable he does it all for the good of humanity even if he has to turn on his own kind and sacrifice his life to finally kill the monster he swore to destroy.
Exactly he inbodies both extremes of the church, how he cares deeply for the children, and how extremely he hates monsters/non Christians. He always thought he was just one part of the protagonist as both are anti-heros.

Alexander Anderson is a misguided hero who turned insane through he's beliefs and not getting the one devil killed "Alucard ", on he's path of righteousness to kill Alucard he lost himself into the madness of power, in order to finish he's goals and even goes as far that he sold he's own flesh and soul in turn for the power to kill Alucard. Alexander felt with each encounter that he just lacked " that little someting" to defeat Alucard properly and this is were Alucard lost he's respect for Alexander, because Alexander wasn't only a servant of god, but also a very extroadinary human with a same shared goal, killing evil iself. ( this is were Alucard could relate to Alexander even tho Alucard is condemned with immortality and the vampire curse that he's a servant forever ) to the wingates family. that why Alexander wants to get rid of him, not because Alexander doesn't have any respect for alucard, in fact he even compliments Alucard for being the thrill he sought. a perfect being . Alexander got also bored of he's kills being to easy and no challenge, Alucard gave him exactly that, a perfect test for he's own abilities and to feel out he's opponent at full force. Alexander to knows when he's beaten and has to back out. He also never felt like he could work together with a vampire also as this goes against he's belief towards god, none the less Alucard stays a threat to humanity in itself if not controlled or killed. ( there are two options in the eyes of the church movement ) control or death. this seemed a very fitting job for alexander to be apointed to. me as a fan of the priest i can tell were Alexander comes from, the will to never give up till you reach your goal and sacrifice everything like your life depends on it. he is a very inspiring character to say the least. ( but misunderstood and written off as a lunatic ) but still a hero from he's own perspective ( the will to do good and save humanity of an everlasting threat even if he vanishes ) Alexander still wants children and others to grow up in a safe world under the eyes of god and safety, by becoming the sword and armor of god. Wich all deciples may wield the holy power like Alexander has. Through this power Alexander teaches them who never fought before and makes them into soldiers like him to fight the godly battle against evil ! see you arround folks ! this is just a speculation ( nothing canon )
