EXACTLY!!! that restaurant definitely over-served him and they are just as liable. Airlines do not let drunk people on flights, I've seen them refuse multiple people, although coincidentally a local airport where I worked always offered me a free beer when I was flying home from work...in the morning, I only accepted once when I flew in the afternoon, but i was going to Africa 17 hours after connections are a beast.

How very true that is. I worked with some incredible asses. They were kept in toe with the strict rules of the military. Once they got out they were even worse, and spent their days taking advantage of whatever they could.

A lot of vets from WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc, are reluctant to talk about their experiences. I think part of that is their military/comradere culture (which has evolved since then), but I also think they saw, heard and did things they never want to think about again, much less talk about. People who've lived war don't want to talk about it. People who brag about combat experience or use it as leverage probably didn't see real combat.

It’s okay to talk about being vet, it’s just not okay to be entitled about it.

Well, we have the draft, and that wasn't voluntary. The last draft was in 1973. There's still the Selective Service that every 18yo male has to sign up for. IF this belligerent drunk was in any branch of the service, I can guarantee you that he wasn't drafted. Therefore, he would have voluntarily entered the service. I'm not a know-it-all but military history is a favorite interest of mine, plus I grew up in the military as both my parents were in the army.

I served one combat tour and I do drop the vet thing but only when I'm arguing politics and people tell me I don't love my country because I'm liberal. So I just say, I hate my country so much I went and fought in a war. Thanks for your service, battle.

My mom is a nurse and works in a veteran's hospital. Many of them are lovely men, but some of them are horrible drunks who have chased away their families because they're abusive and mean. My mom thinks it's because of untreated ptsd. They never get visitors. She used to work with a lot of WW2 and Korean war vets, but now it's mostly Vietnam (and later) vets. She says each generation seems to have less asshole vets because the army started to take ptsd more seriously over time and provided more counselling/therapy opportunities. She works with some younger guys who've been in more recent wars, and she says almost all of them are decent people who are still close with their families.

Both my grandfathers served in the Pacific and my mom served during Vietnam. They were never handed a thing and they refused when people tried. I can't even get my mom to call herself a veteran cause she got discharged early for a non-combat related injury. She's still a vet.

Three out of four of my grandparents were active duty during WWII. My grandfather was an alcoholic, but he paid for his freaking drinks!

Maybe adopt the British pub system whereby you pay for each drink as you order it. Tabs do occur here but they're usually reserved for trusted and regular customers and are a privilege. With our system when you run out of money you can't buy anymore booze and that's kinda that.

No doubt about it ... I've never served in the military, but the guys I know who did would *NEVER* pull out the "I'm a veteran" card. Especially the Marines, maybe it's just the few I know, but they seem to take pride in living up to a higher standard.
