I NEED YOUR HELP. I will be interviewing Alpha M tomorrow to address his absurd video "5 Ways MVMT Watches are BETTER Than ROLEX!". In the video, I want to ask him questions from our community here. Please leave comments with your questions.

I also think watches like the Paul Newman’s are what make Rolex stand out. There may be value and price arguments but there are many people that will put $10,000 forward without second thought because of the history and reputation. I think MVMT is a great brand for its value but it will always compete with companies like swatch, and if that’s not enough of a task the relation to Geneve lets you slap a zero to the price tag.

I'd definitely recommend Certina. I have two (although one doesn't count here, it's a DS Quartz, still going strong since 1989), latest being a DS Podium automatic, delighted with both of them. Thanks for the informative reports, truly inspiring.

I own 1 Hamilton watch, I'm 61 years old, the watch is 61 years old, it was given to my mother by a jeweler she worked for, it was serviced once years ago by Hamilton (I think sometime in the late 90's) it's in a gold case and put a 16mm leather band on it. I have no son's but daughters, no intention of selling it, but I am going to find how much or little its worth. As far as your suggestions, I am interested in a Mido or Alpina (sp). I have heard very good things about both. Not everyone can afford or willing to spend thousands on a luxury brand. Though I have always had my heart set on a Speedmaster and as of late Tudor has caught my eye. Many people have hate for some of these brands mentioned because of their parent corporations. Invicta or Fossil have bought some good brands, and should look at what is produced and not the owner. I have a Zodiac, love the watch and I do know Fossil owns them.

Try chrono24's site if you wanna appraisal the watch You are right that you shouldn't sell the watch but I personally feel you should hand it over to someone (preferably some young adult male relative) who will be able to wear it with the same enthusiasm you have and will take care of the watch

@@tomjens2046 I don't currently follow the market on these 2 brands, but at the time of writing Mido was severely undervalued. While I believe both brands offer similar quality watches, the fact that Mido's entry-level pieces are being powered by ETA-based calibers and not Sellita and were still cheaper on the gray market made them a great value proposition.

@@larryfishkind5387 wow this comment was from 3 years ago. Time flies. After more years of collecting, I kept and wore watches that l liked only. Brand and prestige didn't mean much as 1. Most people dont recognize watches not care 2. working remotely decreased human interaction and 3. Many people respond to expensive watches with 'wth that much on a watch? Buy an apple watch'. So I have been wearing watches I really liked, some with weak branding and odd appearance.

I like the Victorinox. Bought one on recommendation from my local jeweler as a handsome but very durable alternative for when working around the house doing landscaping and such. It’s a bit chunkier than a Rolex Sub, but still pretty comfortable. And one doesn’t have to worry about wrecking an expensive timepiece. I bought the stainless/blue face diver watch with stainless bracelet about five years ago and have rarely taken it off since. Keeps very accurate time and is tough as nails.

Hamilton Khaki King, a little more dressier than the other Khaki Field cousins, power reserve of 80 h and with day & date complications applied with more symmetry in its dial. Between $450-550 a killer option for a everyday day/workday watch. Nice video, cool suggestions 😎👌.

I must admit that, however nice I find many Hamiltons, it’s impossible for me to think of them as "Swiss" watches, even though they're made there, because virtually every design I see them produce seems to be merely a retro throwback to a design of theirs from when they were the top American watch company. Of course, I'm old enough to remember my father going off to work wearing his American-made Hamilton tank watch, but I still think of the brand as an American watch company whose products just happen to be built in Switzerland.

I have a Hamilton Jazzmaster that was a birthday present maybe 10 years ago. It's very thin and very elegant. Thing is, Jazzmasters (mostly) don't have second hands, so there's no way to tell that it's a quartz watch! I love it. Elegant accurate, thin.

Since my first INOX I just fall in love with the watch. I'm not tall at all and have a regular thin body shape and the watch fits perfect, it's bulky but very comfortable even the steel versions, also you can use it with a suit, casual or sport clothes and works very well. Now I have 6 of theses and the quality is outstanding, the automatic versions are a steal considering the details of dials. Also, what Victorinox have is its unique hexagonal bezel making it the only watch in the list with its own personality. Finally, I'm currently here in Switzerland and I'm shock how expensive are the carbon and automatic versions and also the Alpinas, in my country (Chile) the Certinas are more expensive but here is the opposite by far. For me, if you want to step up from Victorinox you have to think in Rado, Tudor or Omega.

Certina offers a lot of bang for the buck! Here's my question: Will MVMT watches have the lustre to trascend or to pass down generation to generation just like Rolex?
@JamesDavidWalley
@JamesDavidWalley 5 лет назад
Certina make great watches - in addition to their divers, the DS-1 line is among the best under-$1,000 dress watches around. The problem with Certina is that Swatch, in their infinite wisdom (?), don't sell them in the U.S.; the only way you can get a new one here is via the grey market.

Roberto Viacava - I just purchased a Certina DS Podium as an alternative to an Explorer 1. It hasn’t arrived yet, but I’ve heard nothing but good things and I absolutely love that dial. Your lack of enthusiasms for these watches -- just the exhaustion in your voice -- brought a smile to my face. So I'll say this much in favor of them: it is through positive experiences with entry-level automatic watches that new horologists are brought into the fold. (P.S. I really wish more people would embrace Invicta...the company is exactly what the high-end watchmakers need, a starting point. Timex (bless 'em), by contrast, is an end point...you buy your Timex and wear it until one of you dies.)

My first Swiss watch was a Victorinox Maverick 24701. Loved the design, but the OEM bracelet was either too snug or too loose for my wrist. Also, the quartz movement didn't align with the indices and had a twitchy way of moving. My second was a Victorinox Alliance 241666. Again, a beautifully designed watch with conservative proportions. My biggest issue with it was the turning of the crown, which was very stiff and made setting the time a pain. I sold both watches. Maybe one day I will revisit Swiss watches...

The Tissot Swissmatic movement (ETA C15.111) is essentially the same Sistem51 movement used in the Swatch Irony, but with a metallic rotor. No hacking, but it does have hand winding (rotating the crown counter-clockwise), and accuracy can vastly change depending on your unit. I first got one with -50s/day, got it serviced and now it's more around -10s/day. Not astonishing but acceptable. One really good thing though, it has a power reserve of around 72 hours, which lasts me the entire weekend without wearing it.

I currently own the Glycine Combat 6. Can't compete with my Omega or Tudor but it's a solid piece. Another good Swiss Made brand in this range I think is Squale, specifically the 1521 if you don't dig their 1545 homages. Great video as always. Love the new intro, especially where it incorporates your Nomos chrono. Be well, John Spartan.

Never forget about Oris because it's such a cool brand making great swiss watches that can easily be found under 1k on the used market.

Ok …. I have to say…. Love all your videos. Your knowledge. Your passion. After watching 142 of your videos.. And this is is NOT a bad thing, but something of note. You lean HEAVY preference toward watches with indices over numerals. Like, heavy heavy. It’s almost as if you cringe when you have to praise a watch with Arabic numerals. It’s a preference. And that’s okay. But it’s become apparent. 😉

Not one mention of The Dirty Time Company, makers of the infamous Spiro Agnew watch. I still have mine with the original strap I got as a gift in 1969. It's my first Swiss watch lol.

Victorinox 'Swiss Army'. I bought it in 1998, and it's still working fine. I paid $100.00 for it.

Christopher Ward comes in under $1000 for a lot of their watches. They also have sales all the time where you can get a nice piece that's usually like grand for half that. I just picked up a c65 trident vintage for under $400 and that's a great price for that time piece being its usually selling for close to $800.

Tissot is a good Swiss watch, but instead of the Swissmatic, I would recommend the V8 Chronograph ivory. It's a quartz watch but keeps great time, looks beautiful, and has a nice ivory face and brown croc skin looking leather strap. It's priced around $300 or less.

Great review! I have 5 Victorinox watches in my collection, two of which are automatics; the Maverick and the discontinued Diver Master 500. They’ve been rock solid performers for years. Good ETA movements for the money.

Some great models here. If I needed a dress-watch, that Tissot Visodate would be high up on my list. This list could still have used the Combat Sub, IMO. If only because there are so many variations of that thing out there. What bothers me about Glycine however is the fact that they have these ridiculously overblown, Invicta-style MSRPs ... so you really have to know where to look to get them at a decent price. I would have added probably a Squale to the list and, naturally, a Steinhart. At just under €400 for the aluminium-bezel Ocean Ones and around €40 more for ceramic-models, you really can't ignore Steinhart in the Swiss Made category. Especially if you're going for one of their vintage homages which give you the look and feel of long out of production classics that could cost you as much as a nice house if you wanted to own them "for real".

Tissot Ballade COSC & Certina DS Action Qz COSC. $300 - 700. The Tissot is 50m. The Certina is 200m.

Totally agree. This looks alot like my collection. Mido, Tissot, Hamilton, and Certina are all under the Swatch flag. Although Alpina predates Frederique Constant, Apina was under Frederique Constant's ownership prior to Citizen's acquisition.
