As a full-time photographer, the most common question I get is about lenses. For many, choosing what lenses to buy is not necessarily easy, and many times a day I see the question "should I buy this lens or that lens?", or "what do others shoot with this lens?" pop up on my Facebook timeline. And that's exactly why I decided to make this Fujifilm LensTalk series! To try and offer some help on the subject.
Each episode will cover one lens, and in this episode, I talk about the XF90mmF2 R LM WR. You'll get my personal and honest opinions about it, I'll talk about what kind of images I use it for, what I like and dislike about it, and many other things. You'll also see plenty of images I've shot with it, complete with full exposure data.

I just came across your channel, specifically your lens talk series, and I really enjoyed the content. You are great both in front of and behind the camera! Very inspiring for a brand new Fuji owner (X-T3, 16f1.4, 50f2, 90f2, and kit zoom)! I look forward to more content from you. I feel you have a lot of knowledge to impart upon this RU-vid universe. Hi! Wonderful channel you got here! what a gem! can't believe I have not stumbled upon your channel way before! Quick question, so how do you compare the 90mm to 80mm, I know the 80 mm is a macro lens, but they say it's very sharp and so nice for portraits too. Interesting that the 90mm is your favorite portrait lens, even better than the 56mm 1.2?!?

Loving the videos Eivind. I spent the last 6 months deciding between the 90 and 50-140. As a wedding shooter, I finally paid the extra for the 50-140 because of the OIS. This lens looks beautiful though

I had the same choice to make but went for the 90mm.its my go too lens for bride and groom portraits. It's amazing

Great review and very nice example photos! Which lense do you prefer when it comes to shooting close up headshots with narrow depht of field? The XF90 or XF56?

Loved this video! I love the 56 1.2 but also lust after the 90 f2.0. Since I also own the 50-140 f2.8 I hesitate. It would be interesting to see a side by side image comparison of the 50-140 set to 90mm at 2.8 next to the 90 at f2.0

Thanks Louise, so glad you liked it! I haven’t shot side-by-sides with the 90 & 50-140, but I did do that with the 90 & 56 this week on a two-day fashion shoot. With both lenses at f/2, the 90 is quite a lot better (not only sharpness, but also the «look») than the 56, but it would be interesting to compare it to the zoom @90mm also. I like the zoom very much, and it gives you a lot of flexibility, but the 90 is just magic. Cheers, Eivind

Funy video! And very elegant images to illustrate it. Question: Did you use flash and reflectors for your (woman ) portrait shots outside? They really look elegant, and I am wondering whether such a look is can be achieved without lighting equipment :-)

Thanks Bernhard, both for your kind comments and for watching! All images in this video are with natural light only, and I haven't used any reflectors or diffusors either on these. I've just chosen my locations carefully so they act as reflectors and flags. Cheers, Eivind

Great video, love the 90mm use it in all my portraits together with my 56mm, BTW it actually outperformed my Canon 135 F2 & that did shock me.

Sorry for my English ... Please specify how the 90 mm fujifilm is superior to the Canon 135 mm f 2.0. I had a Canon f2.0, and now I am working with a Fuji system and, frankly, I miss the 135 mm lens from Canon. At the moment I have a lens of 16-55 f2.8 from Fuji, I am looking for exactly the lens that will correspond to 135 mm from Canon. Thank!

I sold my 90mm 3 days ago, but my buyer brought it back saying when he moved the spot focus to areas other than center, he got out of focus shots. Face/eye detection off, etc. I now have the lens, testing it with the spot focus dead center, first setting it to manual, defocussing and then flipping it to S and letting the lens change focus, and got fine results. My top dial is in S mode. No issues with ibis, tripod, etc. But moving the spot focus to upper left and using the same technique, I got poor focus. Face Eye detect off, boost mode on, etc., etc. Any ideas?

I switched from Fuji to Sony in 2019, so I have no idea what might be causing this. But I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with it, and I hope you'll find a fix. I would take it to a dealer or service center and have them check the lens.

@@jurajbottlik694 I switched because between 2016 and 2019, I had 1983 camera lockups/freezes. During shoots, the camera would just stop working, even though the EVF/back screen was active, and the camera seemed to be on and working. But nothing worked. You couldn't even turn it off, but had to remove the battery, wait a couple of seconds, then restart everything. But then all settings where reset, and that's a big problem during especially studio shoots. I even lost two commercial clients because of these problems. I talked to Fujifilm so many times about it, logged and reported all the lockups, and also tested several other camera bodies and models (X-T2, X-T3, X-H1, GFX) without that solving anything. I even sat in meetings with Fujifilm, and showed them how to trigger this. They admitted that this was indeed a problem, but they never bothered trying to fix it. So in the end, I had no choice but to switch to something that worked.

The 56mm 1.2 is also very fragile. I have had it in repairs twice for the exact same issue. The are both built the same way

What?? Another lens that can’t handle a grown man falling on top of it without breaking off the camera?! This is outrageous! :p

@ The second time it fell out of my Spider holster onto a cardboard box and then onto carpet. Snapped at the seam. It didn't hit anything hard and the box broke its fall

I’m sorry to hear that. My comment in the video (and my previous reply here) about the lens and camera being fragile and breaking was meant ironic, since most things in the world would break if 80kg hit them hard at that angle. I have nothing but great things to say about the build quality of both the 56 and 90, and especially the 90 feels very solid. And I use them in extremely tough conditions almost daily. But sorry to hear about your trouble with the 56. Cheers, Eivind

@ Takk for kjapt svar :) Skjønner. Hadde vært stilig om du kunne tatt "akkurat" samme bildet med begge linsene for å vise bakgrunnsslørheten og lignende. Jeg vet 80mm ikke er fæl, men de sier 90mm har det lille ekstra. Jeg kunne gjerne tenkt meg å sett forskjellen for å si det sånn. Handler ofte inn optikk pga dens egne karakter, så sånne små ting er viktig for meg :) Jeg har blant annet Canon FD optikk, Minolta, gammel Zeiss, Zenit, gammel Nikon og urgammel Fujica optikk kun for karakteristikk =D Aleksander

Det eneste «farlige» med å ta samme bildet med to ulike objektiver for å sammenligne uskarphet og slikt, er at det er den sikreste måten å lokke fram Internettpolitiet (eller trollene om du vil....) som da pirker på testmetoder og skal diskutere sammenligningen i senk. ;) Men personlig synes jeg 80 er veldig fin, mens 90 er magisk. Well, having both is of course expensive, but I would probably buy the 90 and then sell the 50-140. I prefer the 90 over the 50-140 any time. Cheers, Eivind

@ haha thanks for the reply even tho is hurts. I do like the 50-140 when it's needed but it's not exactly a walk around lens. But I'll still keep it. I've been going between the 90, 56, 60 and even the 80 for a long prime, but I think after your advice the 90 is the obvious choice.
