EDIT: While most of this video remains true, for Amiga Explorer V9, once setup as below, you need to over-write the DF0 in the "Virtual Files" folder on the PC end, with the adf you want to write to disk, at step shown at 18:09. Just copying it onto the DF0 that appears outside of virtual files will NOT work, and results in a message saying the disk is full.
This has been covered here:
• Amiga Explorer V9+ ADF...
Mike from the Perth Amiga User Group requested ths video.
There are plenty of videos out there on this topic, and the Amiga Explorer website and software install does a great job at walking you through the process as you will see.
I have included the setup of getting Amiga Explorer running on the Amiga itself.
If you are using a USB Virtual Com Port Adapter, you will need to install this and it's driver FIRST, and ensure that Amiga Explorer is set to use the new virtual com port number.
Amiga Explorer is available from Cloanto here:
www.amigaforever.com/ (under products)
www.amigaforever.com/ae/
It is included with the Amiga Forever Licence, however use with limited file size is available for free as stated on their website, and in the installation procedure.
Please also note that the version of AExplorer shown here may NOT be the very latest, and the product is in constant development.
You will also need a Null Modem RS232 Cable. I recommend getting one with dual 25 and 9 pin female heads.
If using a modern PC, you will also need a Com to USB adapter. be sure to look for a Windows 10 compatible device. Many are not.

The rumor from the ebay seller was that it was a mature owner in his 80's who'd purchased it as an adult, only used it a couple of times, and then put it all back in the box (Batman Pack). I did pay through the nose for it but zero regrets. It's like owning a brand new one again. I love it. Thanks for watching :)

Thankyou tremendously Chris ,i cannot even begin to imagine the huge work put into the creation of this video much appreciated , this tutorial looks very straight forward and clear, I'm actually thinking that the software tutorials were a bonus because here i was thinking trying to be a smart cookie all i needed was right cable and just workbench 😆 that said now i have to decide if i use a old laptop for copying or go Usb route on my Windows 10 laptop, on a side note i much prefer this to cheating with a Gotek lol method myself
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
No worries at all matey :) I'll still be making an external gotek eventually as I think that will make things much easier, but this is a good viable solution in the meantime. My plan is to use an external gotek ONLY to write ADF's to Floppy, by using XCopy.

I tried using my Toshiba laptop with Win 10 and a USB- serial adapter. Would NOT work. Tried two different adapters with two different chipsets, and one was the FTDI that was recommended. Even tried two different null-modem cables. First a factory one, then one I built myself using the information on the Amiga Explorer site. Kept getting errors every time it tried to send the AE files to my A500. Finally went to an old Dell laptop running XP that had an actual serial port. Tried again using the factory cable and failed. Finally had success by using my homemade cable, and was able to transfer the AE files over to my Amiga. I would recommend using an older machine with a physical serial port if at all possible.

@005AGIMA

Depends on how you want to operate imho. I love using original media (ask me if that's true still when you watch next weeks video) because it's part of the experience "for me". If you don't need that touchy feely to get your rocks off, then gotek all the way. My prediction is, by the time my drive fails (which it will), I'll be over disk swapping and will run into the arms of the Gotek goddess and never look back. Maybe even before it fails. Maybe tomorrow. who knows.

Thanks for watching and commenting mate. I think gotek is faster and easier but this is certainly an interesting option. I just like seeing a PC talking to an Amiga I think. It's like a bridge through time, especially if you do it on a modern Windows 10 machine via USB. It's as if the file not only travels over the RS232, but it travels back 30 years into the past. Warm and fuzzy lol.

CAN I USE THIS, 25 pin female to 9 pin male serial adapter - 25 Way D-Sub to 9 Way Dsub - RS232
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 2 года назад
not really sure but I think I know what you're asking. At the end of the day so long as you have an RS232 (not straight) cable, you can use adapters at either end. Those adapters just need to be a straight mapping from the 9 to 25. I simply looked up the pin out for both DB9 and DB25, and connected the relevant pins. I just found a helpful article here: wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/Advanced_Serial_Debugging_Guide

I have tried this trought a DB25 male to DB25 female cable but apparently my method does not work. Amiga explorer keeps telling me that the setup failed. I have tried to decrease rhe colours, to increase the buffer size but nothing is going to work. Any solution? :(
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
That sounds like the wrong cable. it should be female at both ends. If one end is male, you're plugging it into a parallel port at one end or the other. You need a female to female RS232 cable. The "RS232" is crucial. It's a "null modem". it's tricking the machines into thinking they are "dailed up" via modems. It's not the same as a straight 25 pin extension cable, and that sounds like what you're using.

is there any way to write adf directly on pc with floppy drive ?
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
Not that I'm aware of as all a PC would do is write the file to the disk, not write the "image". However....if you build a Greeseweazle (google it) you can write actual disk images including copy protected disks, using a PC and floppy drive. That is much more valuable for preservation than the ADF format that will only work for cracked or AmigaDOS images. Good luck on your search. :)

I’m having a wierd problem. Every time I try to write an ADF file to disk, it will get down to less than 10 seconds to go and Amiga Explorer pops up a box saying “Operation was cancelled by user”. Have tried with different disks and different files. And no, I’m not doing anything while the file is transferring. Help!
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
Does it say anything about the Disk being full? If you're using the latest version of Amiga Explorer, on the PC end, you need to go into Virtual Disks and drag the ADF into there. If you just drag it on to the DF0 icon in explorer, it tries to copy the adf file onto the Amiga disk, and there is not room because of the AmigaDOS info already on the disk. By going into Virtual Disks first, and then dragging the ADF in, it will overright the entire disk image. That is my only thoughts assuming you've already checked that the baud settings are correct. If that doesn't help, best contact Cloanto for advice. Good luck :)
@notajp
@notajp 3 года назад
@@005AGIMA No, I’m not getting a Disk Full error. Just says Operation cancelled by user. I’m still not clear on the Virtual Files thing. I did drag the Kickstart ADF into Virtual Files. Don’t really understand what I’m supposed to do with it from there. It does make sense that maybe the file is too big to fit on the disk, as it does get 90% of the way thru the transfer/disk writing process before it fails. Kinda like its running out of space at the very end.
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
@@notajp Ah ok. I've made a quick video to explain Virtual Files and cover a couple of possibilities. Also I find on some games, the Amiga with throw a bad checksome error. Ignore it and CANCEL on the Amiga end and DO NOT use Disk Doctor, and the Game will still boot in the Amiga fine. The reason for the error is, it's a copy protected image with cracktro, and hence NOT an AmigaDOS formatted image even once written. You'll get that LOTS. :) Video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2lwey0ldLDc.html I hope that helps :) If not....go to Cloanto (makers of Amiga Explorer and Amiga Forever). @005AGIMA 3 года назад
Is the DB9 to DB25 a "Null modem" cable? It can't just be a straight cable. It has to be a cross over, that "fools" the computers into thinking they're going via modems. So an RS232 "Null" Modem cable is what you're after. Also sometimes called a "lap link" cable. Also re the USB adapter (it needs to be an active adapter), you will have to install it's correct drivers, AND ensure it is configured as a COM port, and use the COM port number assigned to it when setting up Amiga Explorer.

I've seen others say that an Amiga external floppy disk drive is necessary to rip Amiga boot disks using this method but you don't seem to need one...is that the case? Also, it seems like you are just writing to high density floppies, no problem, and not double density floppies like the old Amiga floppies were. Just curious b/c I have a bunch I would love to write ADFs to.
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 3 года назад
I've not used an external drive so can't comment on that. The one I have is dead and will be used to house a gotek eventually. You may be thinking of a greaseweazle? That's the build you'd need to write at the flux level and hence copy disks with copy protection. Re my use of HD disks, yep they work fine. Some people believe that using them in an Amiga will bring about the antichrist and the end of life as we know it. However I believe that in 2021, you're probably not writing anything you care about to a floppy disk, and you'd have it backed up anyway, so if the data doesn't last as long it doesn't matter ;). I do have some NOS DD disks but I'm keeping them for restoration projects and other things. If you have an ESCOM A1200 you may have issues as they modified PC disk drives so it may detect it as a 1.44 disk. I hope all that rambling helps lol
