You make me smile. I'm from a small town in the southwest of England, a town which has been continuously settled for at least 2000 years. Our house was built in 1658 and was not the oldest house in our street. In England a hundred miles is a long way... In Americal a hundred years is a long time.

Welcome to the channel! It is funny how we view things differently on both side of the Atlantic. We've learned a lot about the ancient arts of masonry and lime mortar from your countrymen. That old construction has stood the test of time!

Great video. After the war everyone wanted "modern" and Im glad this house survived even if the radiators didnt. Best of luck with the restoration!

I lived on the Presidio of San Francisco and Fort Baker just north of the Bridge. Homes were 1898. Call tubes. Dumb waiters, 4 fireplaces, 7 bedrooms, full basement and attic, lead dimpled ceilings, huge covered porch, so on and so forth. 12 foot ceilings, double doors to each formal room. They worked! 2 stairwells, 1 for servants and their quarters.Loved every minute! Glad to see people who appreciate these beautiful homes! ☺️❤️👍

There's been some debate among viewers about which side of the house was original. From talking to local old timers and some historical research, the brick house was built first by a member of a prominent local family in 1834. Our house was built without the Second Empire adornments and there was a plain roof, not Mansard. In the 1870s, a different owner did major renovation by changing the roof to Mansard, adding dormers and bracketry, fancy porches, and the south house addition. The house became abandoned and derelict in the 1920s for a period of years. Somebody bought the house and added oak floors and cut the walls open to add single story window bays and I believe the hydronic heating system was added at that time. In the 1960s, a lot of work was done to "modernize" the house (new electrical, new plumbing, new kitchen, asbestos floor tiles, paneling, etc). At that time the front bay window was raised up to the second floor. A similar house down the street was constructed by a cousin about the same time but it was built of wood and it is fully restored today.

Yes. As a Preservation Architect, it was bothersome that the elements of the remodel, done in the 1870’s in the Second Empire style that was popular in that decade, were explained to be original 1830-40 era. No curving doors in the 1830’s. The house also probably had jutting bays added (1830’s homes were typically rectangular), windows changed... just like we still do for whatever the style is, today.

@bungalowintransition9112 3 года назад
Beautiful home. Your arch top doors both North and South house are from the 1870’s, as are your newel post in both. Window style is also from the 1870’s remodel. Your mantels however are from an even later remodel - @1900’s. Second Empire fireplace mantels are really beautiful. They do not have all the fanciful decorations. I personally love the marble arched opening ones. They are so indicative of the time. Restoration or rehabilitation.....how far back do you want to roll it and how much of a purist do you want to be? Regardless you are on the right path (brick restoration and using the correct mortar is something most people do not understand) so good for you!

It's all that has been said I can see why the house survived all this time all even through all original it is not all original l but either way it is a good thing it was changed from time to time or it wouldn't have survived this long Very nlce!

Beautiful place. I grew up in a house built in 1806 in Madison, Indiana. It has many of the features of your house. My father, an electrical engineer, put in its first furnace. He had to dig through rock under the house. The house was Federalist design. Beautiful wood floors and chandeliers. Of course, growing up in the 60s, none of us realized what a true gift it was compared to ranch homes of the times. We know now how lucky we were.

What a great project and a labor of love to do this, for your kitchen to look right go to a 1910 time period with raised panel doors and appropriate drawer fronts and upper cabinets with no soffit above them, I design kitchens and Architecture and my feelings are when you are done it looks like the house was built that way and the only thing modern is the appliances and if it is in your budget only the range, you have to have a range, and is the only appliance showing the dishwasher and counter depth refrigerator match the raised panel cabinet doors on their fronts. I will enjoy watching your progress. I have a 1913 home with its original kitchen cabinets, we have added more custom built the same way in the same style so they look right.

I am not sure that thing you were calling the attic was actually an attic...It looks just like the dance studio I attended as a child, which was originally the older boys room. The family had 11 kids, had to stash them somewhere LOL. It probably started out as the maid's rooms.

Although the house has been updated over the years, many of its original features remain. Old houses are usually not a snapshot in time, but rather the result of evolution as the family and the times changed. I'm pleased that you are restoring it, respecting both its history and its evolution, and making it comfortable for 21st century living.

Beautiful home, glad someone has a clue how to restore an old home. They know what to update and have a plan to bring her back. My home 1914 was gutted down stairs, tore out the old trim. Upstairs bath was redone in the 70's... Awful job, claw foot tub thrown out cheap shit put in. Spent tim &$$$ replacing with original wood work & tub. So when I see this I really appreciate the efforts to thoughtfully restore . Thanks for sharing your project good luck.

The South house was built in the 1870's you say, and not built as spacious or decoratively. Makes me wonder if it was built somewhat hastily. Perhaps a family daughter found herself widowed with young children following the Civil War and needed to move "home" with her parents, thus the addition with smaller bedrooms and its own entrance. Yes, the drinking fountain makes it look as though the addition was at one time used as a schoolroom.
