Came here expecting great guitar talk. Did NOT expect such an open, honest, warm, conversation filled with gratitude. Hearing him talk about how he misses Scott and regrets that it ended poorly and that he is sad that Scott has missed out on so much, was really touching. We appreciate you, Dean.
I really do believe that Dean, Robert and Eric sincerely loved Scott, but there's only so much you can do for a person who is an addict. You can scream and cry until you're blue in the face trying to help the addict but truly nothing will change until the addict wants to change for themselves.
Dean DeLeo is my undisputed favorite 90s guitarist. I cut my teeth in the 70s on guitar in Detroit, but appreciating DeLeo's playing revitalized me. DeLeo is the reason I'm not a relic stuck in the 70s. (--- internet went down in Sarasota T-storm; couldn't join chat 😔 terrible luck) Thank you, Dean! I came close to missing the boat 🎸🔈🔉🔊
mine too...any style he played he made his own. he and his brother are monsters of melody...I remember waiting for the next single to hit the radio when they were on that run of plush, dancing days cover, Vaseline, big empty, interstate, trippin on a hole, big bang baby, lady picture show, down, sour girl, days of the week....I know I left some out like sex type thing etc, but I already went overboard lolll...I just love the band ...what a run of singles...to me they had the best catalog of any 90s band
Dean=the truest MVP of guitar wizardry. The Jimmy Page of our generation. And, always the best interview. What a legacy. Ask him about Sweet and you'll really make his day. DeLeo Bros are a true American institution. And, gotta shout-out Jeff for being a better singer of STP material than I expected anyone could be.
@MrButtfaceable sweet was a British rock group that was big in the 70s. Dean really likes them. They're legendary. You must be young of you never heard of them. Check em out.
Dean DeLeo is my favorite guitarist of the entire era. Ditto for his brother on bass! Alice in Chains is a close second, but STP had so much texture and layers and melodic songs, with jazz chord inversions.
The 90’s I Loved STP and the DeLeo brothers & Scott Weiland (R.I.P), Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains & Layne Staley (R.I.P.) were the greatest guitarist and Frontmen of this time by far!#STP#AIC#🎸🔥🤘🏻❤️✨
Dean and I used to live in same neighborhood. He is exactly as he appears, here. He'd hangout at Starbucks and we'd talk about music. Sometimes he'd play me demos in his SUV. Sheesh. He never crossed over from fan to rock star persona. How cool.
He is totally normal and grounded in person as well. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times through my friendship with their old webmaster. He even remembered my name/who I was when he saw me after a show in AC. I was blown away, as he is my favorite guitarist. Robert is just the same.
yes: robert was lucky to have such a great brother: and dean didn't do too badly either that way.., my brother was stubborn: even more so than i was... but i still [occasionally] try to play, so maybe i'm the stubborn one, eh?
saw them in 94..basically they played core and purple in their entirety..they sounded so great...Scott was on fire back then..only concert out of the many I have been to where the audience sang every word to every song full volume
me too: once i started to better appreciate them 'weird chords' that never sounded so great, with some awful distortion or whatever: somehow these guys made it okay to sorta-sound-that-way, but yet soundin' so great, and still quite inexplicably to me, eh? apparently, sheer repe-tition, makes the heart-grow-fonder, or somethin' like that, yeah? in any case, it's the bomb, man~ [and thank god-for-that, too]
Dave looks 70's years old. Lol hard to believe he was 21 . In 1990.surprized Dean was born , in 1961. I was 27 , 1990.Dean is brilliant on the guitar & Robert on bass. & the drummer Amazing band , with Scott weiland. Awesome band.
Hearing Dean talk about jazz chords being the blueprint of their music couldn’t be more true. I asked Dean at an STP meet and great at HMV back in the late 90s/early 2000s when I was a teenager. I asked him what he listened to and how he came up with his chord progressions. He said the exact same thing to me that he said in this interview. He listened to jazz guitarists like Tal Farlow and that Robert was responsible for the progressions in their songs.
This is fantastic! As a guitarist, I try to dissect everything Dean does. He always throws in some really weird/ tough chords. I've got a jazz background and his style fits right in! Favorite solo is in Long Way Home. Thanks Dean and gang.
yeah? who even says that? well, and why should that matter, who-says-what, right? [if you say so: yer hired::] ha ha:: do i sound a little jaded? i been listenin' the the american-journal-wit'-a-silent-'j'~
I’m a huge Dean, Robert and STP fan, it’s so awesome when your heroes live up to your expectations. Very humble and gracious dude, as others have stated.
Been into STP since the drop. 'Purple' is my favorite album of theirs. Dean is a very talented and creative player/writer but what I like most about him is that he's not a total gear head but instead seems to be focused more on the music/songs and emotional impact. What a novel concept, eh..? I love that David had to tell him several times about his own amp setups/what kind of pickups were in what guitar/etc and Dean was just like "Oh. Okay, cool." :) A man after my own heart. Great episode, guys!
@@philliptripolonejr.1589 it took a few months of radio overexposure, to finally sink in, plus a very cute older lady, to call-me in/out... now i guess i might never get in/out:: help:: no:: save yourselves~~
I had the great pleasure of auditioning for STP before they hired Jeff. Dean was every inch as lovely, warm, smart and cool in person as he comes across here. One of the true greats. Thanks for getting him on here guys.
Trip The Witch is FANTASTIC. Dean Deleo is my favorite guitar player of all time. STP best band EVER in every single one of it's forms and different names.
STP is still great! Saw them last week August 2023. Robert, Dean, Eric are Great musicians. Jeff Gutt as difficult his position may be, fits in seamlessly, and they support him well..
I’m a year older than Dean, been playing since 1967, and IMO Sour Girl is one of the most original songs I’ve ever heard. Nothing before or after it has sounded anything similar.
what? so he's apparently older than what he would sound like? well, duh:: but i mean, it must be nice to have a fairly agreeable younger brother with a little height-advantage and a winning altitude... haha:: they're the best-there's-ever-been, unless: yeah unless we 'elongate' the so-called competition fairly in-definitely, yeah?
we concur: or, i mean, we might, but my brother's not-so-damn'd-'agreeable', fortunately or un-fortunately, right? haha [and, speakin' for ourselves, y'understand, we may or may not be-gettin'-old, m'man...]
My band opened for STP and the story about their name is funny. (a venue called "Soma" in San Diego) When we got the call the were only going by "Stone Temple" and I remember the promoter telling us (because we were going to make fliers) he wasn't sure what their name was going to be. But right now their going by "Stone Temple" by the time the show came they were called Stone Temple Pilots and they were huge because their first single had blown up. I actually have the original mighty joe young demo tape!
Dean was and is still a great influence on me. The music has saved my life through many dark times. My 2 year old son is born a week before Dean. I also named him after Mr. Deleo. A great great player.
This interview completely changed how I thought Dean would be as a person. What a great guest! I also always related his playing to Jimmy Page…. Something about his feel and how eclectic the music always seemed to be.
Great video. You guys are super knowledgeable. I had the pleasure of working with Dean and STP from 93-‘03, and they were all such great guys. As a young kid in the biz, i kinda cut my teeth with those guys. Wonderful times.
I’ve learned so much about how versatile the guitar can be and how to incorporate jazz into rock from Dean! He’s an incredible musician. I dig the hard stuff and his smooth side equally.
Scott is my most favorite vocalist!!! I miss him too and it brings me to tears as well… Jeff is awesome and becoming a favorite of mine as well… 🎸🤓🎸🙏☮️
True masters of the get o both brothers super talented. How many guitarists are actually out there that can pull off what Dean does.the biggest for me are his fills and to create the illusion that your listening to two guitars and of coarse those punchy tones . Thanks Dean love your styles and you've been a huge inspiration with my playing .brilliant episode here .down to earth guy who's stuck out some serious shit and put out some of the best rock n roll guitar playing and don't forget some of those super dooper cords .
Dean Deleo is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. Grew up with STP and was literally obsessed with his tone and playing. I’ve been waiting for something like this. Thank you all so much. And thanks to Dean for playing the soundtrack of my youth.
@@tone-talk This is a really special one my brother! I may have told you that I became aware of STP when they played some early ‘Core’ era shows with my friends in The Flaming Lips when they were in the black leotards and Kiss make-up. They were very much against the grain of other alternative/neo-punk bands at the time and they got zero respect in the early days. But they were and are damn good. I saw the ‘No. 4’ tour with Scott and it tore me a new one. Robert is an incredible writer and killer bassist and backing vocalist as well with Kretz providing killer power drums and tasty grooves. So great!
Damn, I never knew Dean was such a cool fellow with a great personality. I always took him for a quiet kind of guy. Great to see he's got his stuff together and recognizes the important things in life like family.
And his brother seems just as cool and humble from everything I've seen. Very intelligent with a vast musical knowledge and creativity. But so down to earth.
Thanks Marc, Dave, and Dean for the awesome show. I've been a fan of Dean and STP since they broke and got back into playing a few years back listening to STP albums on repeat after Scott died. Great interview, very funny and humble man.
my favorite guitarist and band of the 90s..one of those bands where every member brought top notch musianship and feel to their spot within the band.. dean thank you...your music was a part of some of the best memories of my life
This has got to be up there with the best episodes. The story of the band name, the blueprint for the band and just hearing Scott's name being mentioned in a story. Can't wait for the new album. Thanks for putting this together, Marc and Dave you legends!
STP was absolutely amazing at Rolling rock festival in PA ☆ a moment in rock history captured in all its glory blazing and heartfelt now cyrstlized in my heart forevermore
That was an awesome chat! Thanks! Great stories from one of the great players, what a gentleman. I saw STP a couple times in the 90’s and they were killer (and still are)! Thanks for the great music, definitely part of my life’s soundtrack. Cheers!
Thanks so much for this, all involved. Totally stumbled across it! Purple is up there as one of my fav albums ever. So great to listen to the conversation as I get back into guitar after a 20 year break! Cheers.
I was on board right from the beginning with STP. ALWAYS admired Dean’s playing. I knew he was different then the rest. Real interesting to hear him talk about the band after all these years.
I have seen a lot of bands over many years and one of the best live shows that stands out was STP in the early 90's. Watching Dean play was incredible and his live tone was awesome. Excellent episode, you guys are great!!!!!
This is a great interview. I'm not a guitarist but STP are the best and Dean and Robert are brilliant musicians and writers. Thank you for the interview guys.
i think if eric wasn't the coolest, next to the scottster, we might never have heard of the brothers, for like at least another six months or so tho:: but in any case, their place-in-history's secure:: [oops:: i mean, as long as 'mandela approves', right?]
@@gokberkmusic6865 I hear you man, I play STP songs with the easiest chords possible lol, because the chords Dean play are insane... he is definitely jazzy with his Aug+9 and crazy positions; I've bought a few transcribed guitar books from their albums and I can't reach half the chords he does lol; cant imagine how he would play that live! I gotta listen to the rest of their stuff, after Scott I couldnt listen to STP... but I will/shall... (actually I just heard 'years'; it's nice and calm; is it on D?.. I really hope the DeLeo brothers keep composing for a long time!
@@tinfoilhatter depende on the song i'd say... i havent learned his bass lines but playing live he was all over the fret... and also singing lol they are all awesome!! (Drummer, Scott, etc!
So crazy. I flew home from Las Angeles today and I decided to put on the second STP record. It was the reissue with the live stuff on it. Great performance. I put on RU-vid and see this interview. They wrote such amazing songs.
Thanks for this. Huge respect for Dean and Robert, and obviously STP. Songs are So original, those beautiful chords just pull me in and leave me wanting more every time. Thank you Dave for making amazing sounding amps that allow you to hear all the strings even with a lot of gain. Just got my BE 50 a couple months ago. It’s the amp I’ve dreamt of for the last 35 years
Trip The Witch is one of the greatest rock instrumental records (except for one song with Jon Anderson). Props to Tom Bukovac for collaborating with Dean on it.
Great job, here, for sure. The gospel is right here. Dave really nailed dean's need to express his amazing chord work which is/was just so literate and deep. What a timeless collaboration. Thanx man!😵🤯
What I find interesting and kind of ironic about Dean and Robert's musical partnership is that Dean credits Robert for a lot of the writing on on Core even tho he plays bass, apparently Robert is also a prolific riff maestro who showed Dean how to play the songs, particularly the hit single, Plush. I thought that was good on Dean for being so humble and giving where credit is due, b/c he respects Robert a lot, both as a brother and as a musician.
Dean Deleo is a class act. Love STP. I remember when Core came out and people were comparing them to Pearl Jam and I remember being pissed about it. Core is one of the best albums of all time. I never thought they got the respect they deserve.
