Things are moving so fast now. The floors are down, insulated and we are ready to start framing.
I have used Foil Board to insulate my floors. It is lightweight, easy to install and when paired with an air cavity gives great thermal performance. Foil Board is EPS which I really don't like, but I just couldn't find a better product to suit my needs. If I do future builds I might think about other insulation systems I can incorporate into the design of my trailer.
I have used OSB flooring because it was the lightest and most cost effective solution. By going an 18mm OSB I have been able to save 60kg which will count towards my 200kg hardwood floor I am really hoping I can do. However 18mm OSB is only rated for 450mm joists, I have 600mm. I should have used 22mm. But I realised that much of my floor is inaccessible (under the bed, couch and cabinets etc) which means it won't take much load. So instead I put bracing between my ribs in the areas that are actually going to take load. It cost me 6kg in steel but saved 60kg in floor.
Next steps we move onto framing which I am crazy excited about because this tiny house will actually start taking shape. Stay tuned for some wall frames.
Don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

Thanks for going into detail in regards to different insulation options while making it easy for non experts to understand 💚

You are welcome. I spent a lot of time trying to work out what the best option was. I think there are some better products in the states but this was the best I could come up with here

This takes ages to build hmm.... loved the one you did before. You are my inspiration for creating a bicycle RV of 2m in length with 1.2m width.. with bed sleeping diagonally and a toilet/shower in it... roof solar panels just like you did... and having ................ anyways yes. Lots of stuff. But that's only if I'll get homeless ofc

Yeah it's certainly a different build to the Miro Tiny House. But I really enjoy the process of both. I want to live longer term in this one and I work from home so I want to create a super livable space. But I also love the simplicity and utility of the Micro. Man that bicycle RV sounds awesome. Please share your progress if you do it. I would love to see it.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Oh that's a good plan. What a frugal way of living. I'd love to reach the same one day, having an income from home and then consider myself safe. Oh THANK YOU :) I'll sure do!

Did you insulate under the underbed storage? Great engineering. Great series! (I love that you built your own crane.)
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 4 года назад
I sure did. I used the same method. The base to that storage sits on bracing ribs that run between the chassis so I just insulated under them and I left an air cavity on the sides as well. Thank you Erika, I really appreciate that. Haha the crane was the best investment ever. I am glad you like it ;)

I'm thinking foil board for subfloor as well, maybe even for the walls(kind of depends, but right now I'm looking at a tradies ex work trailer that has some steel frame at about 1.5m high on the sides which means I'd probably build the frame up from there using additional SHS which wouldn't leave room for the more interesting eco/salvaged insulation I was considering unless I batten it out internally when I'd prefer the steel is within the insulation layer). I wonder if there's any value to insulating under the entire trailer so there's no heat transfer. I guess that makes it more vulnerable though, hmm. At one point I thought about fitting the trailer base with sandwich panel but you'd have to literally build it into your trailer for the intended outcome and while I think it makes sense structurally(you would basically slot the panels into U-section and H-beam aluminium and the whole assemblage becomes your upper frame) I'm not confident in achieving that or having it registered or any of the other complications involved. And as you mention our climate isn't likely to need such measures. You mention you want a hard-wood finish for your flooring; did you at all consider omitting the subfloor for those areas and fixing engineered flooring directly onto the trailer? In a regular house I wouldn't really think of that being worthwhile but when weight is a significant issue the lightest option is to go without and fix things accordingly. PS; I do think you should pick up some marine ply for the wet area but hopefully it's not a problem for you.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 3 года назад
You could certainly do more to insulate from the frame of the trailer or insulate the frame. It just means a lot more effort and we just don't really get the extremes here in Australia to warrant. I know in Canada they go for full thermal isolation. Did think of putting hardwood floor down but engineered flooring by it self is far from structural so still needed a structural substrate. I did look at solid boards but it got very expensive and really needed closer joists. Turns out it might work out ok as I am looking at making my own flooring using veneer strips I cut off from my window timber. Haha I totally get where you are coming from with the wet area. But honestly my view on it is get the water proofing right. The whole area will be tanked. If that is right then moisture shouldn't be a problem. I'll just have to be careful to get it right. If I ever have a leak in the walls OSB is still moisture resistant.

Awesome video mate, I still dont understand how you secured the insulation onto the trailer, you mentioned aluminium tape, is it just taped up to hold it? Is it strong enough with just tape?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
It was a mixture of adhesive, tape and on larger areas I screwed into the frame with large mudguard washers. It's not really made for travelling regularly but fine when it's setup as a house.

Do you have a dry weight ideal goal? With the finish of the flooring will you be doing a Harwood veneer over the floors? Fiberglass for the shower?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 4 года назад
I want keep total transportable weight you 3000kg per trailer. So that'll be a bit more than dry weight but I want to focus on them actually being movable. Looking at engineered hardwood floor, still looking for lighter options. Looking at a light weight plaster in the shower. I really don't like fiberglass. But still working on that one
@TheSpindrift76
@TheSpindrift76 4 года назад
@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse I'm not a big fan of fiberglass but thier are alternatives to the traditional fiberglass that I've looked at. For the flooring it might be worth trying to talk with a manufacturer. Engineenered products seem to necessary for tiny builds due to weight limits and road tolerances needs. Thanks for all the work you are sharing.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 4 года назад
I would probably look at aquatile products before fibreglass. But it really is a challenge to find lightweight wet area products. Yeah I am still researching the floor options. Veneering my whole floor would be an awesome idea. Not sure how I go about that yet but I am going to research.
