Viewer discretion advised... this is the much-awaited shower scene 😂
If you know, you know: 🙌.
Well, the shower is FINISHED. In fact, it's my FIRST 100% complete area in the house. This is a special milestone. From this point forward build updates are going to start focusing more on finished areas in the house than making stuff. I can't say how excited this makes me. There is so much left to do but I can finally see a path through to the end.
I lined the shower with a product called Wall Art. Normally I don't like this stuff and think it looks horrible, but I found two colours that look great. Concrete matte and slate matte - I went with slate and I am really happy with the result. Then for the tiles I have gone with a 5mm thick hexagonal mosaic tile. Now these are not a floor tile, but my theory is it's going to be difficult to get such a small tile to crack, I may have issues with grout but that is easy to repair. Speaking of cracking these tiles almost cracked me when I messed up my slope and had to rip out over 1200 tiles by hand. I hope I never have to go through that again, it was painful.
Next step is to finish building my lift-up bed and then I am waiting for the cabinetry which is already underway with the cabinetmaker. I have designed and drawn it all up, but I am having it cut on a CNC as it's such sooo much easier than my trying to cut all that out on a saw. I'll then build and install it all. I am also making all my own benchtops and end panels.
Until next time, don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

🙌 It looks like it will be a relaxing place to start the day. I had my bathroom renovated last year, switching from white to concrete style paneling. What a difference on bleary eyes. My small bathroom looks smaller but I like the calm ambience.

I'm looking at concrete for a renovation of my parents' bathroom and I'm looking at products. Do you have a recommendation?

Oh it looks a soooo much better that would have been a great move. I don't like this panelling other than a couple colours like this. Feels warm and inviting.

@elrey8876 www.bunnings.com.au/wall-art-2400-x-1200-x-3mm-concrete-matt-wet-area-wall-shower-panel_p0095450. Very easy to work with and looks great for what it is. I would always prefer tiles (or some other finishes if I could) but for a good looking easy finish this is great.

I love the look, hiding the vent in the skylight is an amazing idea. though I probably would have tried to hide the shower head up there too, just to keep the dark look.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Yeah I am so happy with that vent idea. I am anticipating should pull the steam straight out really well. I have a good volume fan and it isn't pulling through a vent so should have good flow. Haha I would normally do something like that, but I actually like the contrast. When I see the shower head on vs of it looks a million times better on. The brass against the black looks amazing. The brass also reflects light into the space which looks really cool.

you must have an incredible amount of patience to be such a perfectionist. i eventually give up and leave things not quite so perfect. but it drives me nuts. but i dont have the skills or tools or money to make things as perfect as you do. good work!
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 6 месяцев назад
🙌 thank you. Honestly anyone can do it. You just have to keep coming back until you create what you want. And with experience you get better at doing it so it becomes easier. Sure, it can be hard but there is so much joy in something you make and are proud of.

Perfection! Just a comment to others doing showers. NEVER scrimp on the tanking (waterproofing) the tiles are decorative. The water WILL go through the grout but expect that and ensure the shower base drains with no tiles on them.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
100%. In fact, I would say there is no way to scrimp... there is only a right way. Trying to cut corners is just asking for expensive and difficult problems. The only thing which is seen as compliant that I would never touch is one coat waterproofing. For me, the chances of getting a pinhole are just too high, not worth it. I didn't get too much into the process of water proofing, perhaps I should one day, if it helps someone get it right it'll certainly save a lot of heartache one day.

I am definitely not normal, it is beyond me why anyone would use tiles that need grouting. It is a dirt trap and a high maintenance material. Don't get me wrong, the shower looks great, like everything else you do. And it is a personal choice thing. Looking forward to the next episode. 👐
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
👐 What do you use in wet areas instead? I really struggled with floor ideas that were durable and looked nice. I haven't had a lot of trouble with grout. You shouldn't really have to do maintenance if it's done right and with a sealer stain resistant. Do agree that something like these hexagons do trap a bit more dirt when trying to sweep but I find a stick vac with a hard floor brush super easy to clean them with. Love your support, hopefully I can get a vid on the bed out soon.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Hi Phil, I doubt I will be able to give you any good ideas. While I like things to look good, practicality more often wins the day. My version of that build would certainly not have your polish in design and finish. From a durability, waterproof, ease of cleaning I would have gone stainless. Very boring and only reasonable looks, fairly bombproof though. I probably shouldn't have said anything, the job you did looks really great. I am usually fine with most materials in the right place and context. Unfortunately tiles have suffered from two previous revamp experiences where I was fixing what was there and not ripping them out. And even when taking them out, they have a tendency to lean towards the fairly gross end of the spectrum. Thanks for the thoughtful interactions. 👐
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Nah man I love hearing people's different ideas. I actually considered something similar. I was looking at lining it with brass. But a friend said they had experienced something like that with copper and when you got in there it was cold as hell and very uninviting. But as far as ease goes that is one of the things I like about this panelling. Clean and simple.
@alexrains1893
@alexrains1893 Год назад
Great and incredibly informative video as always. 🙌 As a cabinet maker I couldn't help but giggle at the phrase 'push it through the CNC'. I feel like that phrase is reserved for the panel saw, you're more likely to 'place on the CNC and walk away' although i'm unsure if that saying is going to take off.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
🙌 Haha I absolutely got that saying from the phrase of pushing it through the panel saw. Although with CNCs it's close to all you do. You just push a sheet of whiteboard from the pile to the CNC. Unless you have auto load in which case you just press print 😂. I keep telling people that the cabinet maker will just print my kitchen why on earth would I spend weeks pushing a cutting list on my jobsite saw. Thats without talking about edge banding, cutting hinges, marking out runners etc etc.
@alexrains1893

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 100% agree. I’ve been running my business for 10 years and i outsource all of that. I don’t want the outlay, floor space and maintenance of a massive commercial CNC and edgebander. I’ll stick to what I do best which is solid timber work and install.

I'm building my own tiny house and it's nowhere close to the perfection level that you achieved in yours. That said, and knowing how much my build cost me psychically I wonder how you are doing mentally my man. The thing you said about those brass edges, where you really make things hard for yourself sometimes with no good reason, I can relate to that so well. It would be nice to talk one day about our experiences!
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 6 месяцев назад
Hey man I really appreciate you asking, I have a lot of respect for that. I am doing great. I am tired and ready to finish so I can just enjoy this thing. But, I can see the end and very motivated to push through to the end. Getting to put great looking final finishes into the house really helps. Ha we make things hard for ourseleves but it also means we get things that we otherwise wouldn't. In time we forget the pain and get to enjoy our fruits. Love to see your tiny, is it online?

More amazing dedication and attention to detail. Did you at any stage consider a whole shower space insert like you see in the VW GRand California or Winnebago Revel to eliminate water leaks?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Thank you my friend 🙏. No absolutely not, and not fibreglass inserts either. I really wanted it to look as much like a house as possible. I am not worried about leaks. If you do the waterproofing layer right you shouldn't have to worry. It creates a vert elastic membrane that can resist movement. It's also why we bond break the corners. That's where the membrane continues across the corner but does not adhere to the membrane for about 10-15mm. This allows it to flex and move as the substrate moves but does not tare. Get waterproofing right and you won't ever have to worry about issues.

Great work mate! How are you securing the shower door for transport?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Thank you mate. Great question. I am actually going to take it off and strap it to the bed. The hinges just clamp onto it. Couple reasons. It's heavy and those side panels/hinges/brackets are not designed to be shock-loaded. Also, I want to reduce weight at the front of this trailer as my ball weight is a bit high.
