I finally did it!! I have been promising this video for a long time. A video showing how I join my trailers.
This is not a normal build update. In this video we are stepping back a little bit and looking at how these trailers join together. I have been getting a lot of questions about how on earth I will ever line these trailers up again. Also, I realised I have shown you the process of how they join over almost 20 videos. So, it's time to do a single video and show you in a bit more detail how it goes together.
There is also a proper build update on the way very soon. I have been slow on the videos but I have been very BUSY on the house. The interior is well underway and I have been hard at work roughing in all the services. I will get straight to work on the next build update and you should have one soon.
The interior is going to very cool and I can't wait to show you. Like seriously, there is going to be some damn cool features.
Until next time, don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

That idea of attaching the second trailer to the side of the first by using the tow ball is genius, so easy to correct if they aren't at the correct angle. Well done.

EXACTLY. It was just so simple when I finally came up with it. It really allowed everything else to work. I have moved them a little once and it wasn't too bad at all to set them back up.

That is great. Honestly I wouldn't make them so they can be joined like this. It was way too much work. Two that are joind permenantly (build on-site or moved in) or two trailers co-located would be the idea.

This turned out beautiful. You Sir need a production line. All the mechanisms and geometry are perfect. Only thing that'd put it over the top would be a fold down deck.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 2 года назад
Haha you are too kind. Not sure I would put myself through this much pain again. But building them is something I am considering. A deck still may come. We are not done yet. It won't be fold down but I have some ideas. If I don't run out of money of course. Although the local cabinet maker has said he'll burn my house down if I don't put a proper deck on it. haha.

▶︎ *PHIL!* ▶︎ THIS is incredible work! Fan-bloody-tastic! So the idea is a couple tow the 2 THOW with separate cars, and then co-join/assemble at their destination to make a bigger THOW - genius! PS - My Dad was a carpenter and as a child I spent lots of time hanging around his workshop while he built stuff. Sounds like you had a similar journey and are putting all your skills to great use! Love your work :D
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse

Thank you Teena. I really appreciate that. They can be moved with separate cars or I can just do two trips. Joining them up gives it such an expansive space and I am so happy with how it feels inside. I can't wait bring the interior to life. Ha, yes. I also learned by growing up in a workshop with my Dad. It is great to be reconnecting with that side of myself.

I've done my best to try and capture it in video but it is just hard to really convey everything that you can see in real life. And it's hard to give a feel for the space. It certainly doesn't feel like a box. The space inside feels so expansive and I can't wait to bring it to life as I start to line it

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse I'm sure you'll do amazing with it ☺️ Are you dedicating one box for bathroom & kitchen then the other box for a bedroom/living room What would be awesome is if you used a winch for the bed so it can be lowered or put away an then use a sofa bed so that can then be laid flat when the bed is down an then as a normal when the bed is away, so many possibilities x
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 2 года назад
No the main trailer will be kitchen and lounge. Then the side trailer will be the bathroom and bedroom. I've actually designed it so I have a separate, full size bed and sofa. I'll have an entirely separate bedroom.

Great engineering, I have a question, why did you wanted to join the houses, what where you trying to solve, whats the main scope? When coupling the houses there will be air gaps, it will be complicated to achieve air tightness, its good to have thermal insulation, it's also better to couple it with air tightness.

Haha don't watch too much of me at once. That can't be healthy. Great to see you back though. The two-trailer design is working out really well on many fronts so far. The best is how the space feels inside. It just don't feel like a small box at all.

Could you have put the floor on the trailer with the hole?
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 2 года назад
I did explore that. There were a couple issues that prevented it. 1. The trailers had to be PERFECTLY aligned as the floor would be swinging down between the walls. If it was slightly out it would damage the walls. 2. There would be a gap at the bottom between the wall and the floor which was hard to hide. Now the walls overlap the floor so it hides the join and any variation in alignment. 3. The thickness of the floor prevented the doors swinging around and nesting into the side trailer. I could have recessed the floor even further but that would have taken up so much space. 4. It would then be fixed to the side trailer but the join that is seen is between the side trailer and the floor. So, any variation in alignment would show in the join between the main trailer and the floor. Whereas now that gap will be hidden under the wall that will be built on the side trailer. Love the thoguhts.

Ha, cheers legend. No think more soft tonneau cover. I would never be able to lift something solid up. Just need to keep the wind out.
@AewonWolf
@AewonWolf 2 года назад
This is Amazing and you've definitely got my creative juices flowing in reworking my own Tiny house design, what I can ask is did you consider a sliding deck floor using industrial heavy duty runners for the gap, essentially creating a subfloor in the one tiny house or trailer that can slide out and clip into the other. I would love to know your thoughts on that idea and again great job on the build and thank you for great video.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 2 года назад
Thank you my friend. I love that it's giving you some ideas. Yeah I did think through that idea. There were three major issues. 1. Significant redesign of the trailers to allow a floor to slide out. It would have raised my overall floor height and not only would I need to allow space for the floor but also sufficient structure for the permeant floor above the one that slides out. 2. It would mean that my floor is at different levels. There was no simple way to have a floor that slides out and then is the same height as the rest of the floor. I could have done a super complicated lifter but that would have been a LOT of engineering. Given I don't pack up and setup very often a slightly more involved way won over the very complex build. 3. I have had to build this join so that it lines up perfectly and won't move, but then assume it's not going to line up and will move anyway. A slide out floor would require the two trailers to be perfectly aligned and would not allow for any variation. I.e. right now the two trailers are slightly out and you can actually see the difference in the gap in the floor (that will be under cover strips). Love the thoughts. Keep them coming.

What was your eventual solution for the floor panels? Also, are they insulated and if so - what did you use? I hope they are insulated properly, else you just created a major thermal bridge between your two trailers (and there is already a major issue with the airflow there as is)
@kalanivernon7273
@kalanivernon7273 11 месяцев назад
Looking at your solution though, might it not have been better to have the floor panels underneath one of the trailers and slide out like they did for the roof panels (and then use a hydraulic system like you have for the panel lifter to level the floor into place). You could also have a sliding panel on the side-trailer that buttons up the side, and then slides out of the way on rails when you want to open the house up. (If done correctly, the rails could have also had a swivel mechanism so that it could swing out to provide the outer wall without the wall from the main trailer). Either way, nice concept! I'm sure it can be perfected, even if you had to jury-rig some solutions on your particular build.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 6 месяцев назад
The floor panels will be lined with foamcell (a foam sheeting). The same as the rest of the house. I slept in there one night and the foamcell with an air cavity makes a huge difference. The idea of having the floor panels slide out is a great one but insanely difficult. Huge egineering challenge and almost impossible given they need to be same width as the trailer yet the trailer floor needs to support a large structure. Great in theory but beyond my skills to egineer. Anything is possible with enough time, money and brain power of course. The current design works pretty well and I only have a couple small holes for air that are dealt with using some EVA foam
