Its interesting they had so much diversity in the 70;s and genres of music on the same show. From Rock, Pop, R&B, country, disco, Funk, Motown, Soul, even novelty songs like Disco Duck. You just dont see that kind of diversity today on the same stage. Music today is segregated by race, genre and who the target audience is.

Random trivia: MCA bought Decca records around 62-63, but continued to release records with the familiar Decca label for the next 10 years! Finally, the suits called a meeting with purpose of ending the practice. Somebody, looking at the list of new releases, said, okay, that one will be the last Decca release. It was Dobie Gray's "Drift Away".

@@ianman15 I imagine it was selected to be the last because Dobie hadn't had a hit in a while and nobody would notice the change for the 45 after it. Then it became a surprise hit. Probably there were some office memos asking "Do we really want to do this now?"

He shopped for his groceries at a store where I was a manager. He’d be singing along with the songs on the radio and I’d often walk up to him and say , ‘ you know, you could do this professionally “, then I’d wink. He found me hilarious and we often talked. Two Chicago guys talking music , he was definitely the ‘ice man ‘ ! Too cool !

I met Doc Severinsen under unusual circumstances. He was dining in a hotel restaurant in Dayton, Ohio with a group of people. We were on the 14th floor. I was working my way through college as a wine captain. I was informed by another employee a fire had broke out within the hotel and I was assigned to escort Mr. Severinsen his guests down fourteen flights of stairs to the fire exit on the street. He was so nice about the incident however he did say he wanted to stop at his room and get his trumpet. He said he was not leaving the hotel without his instrument. And we granted his request still not knowing what the situation was like. We got his trumpet and then continued the trek to the street. Fortunately everything turned out well as the fire was contained in a small kitchen on the other side of the hotel and the evacuation was for the safety of the guests. And throughout it all, he still gave me his autograph. Classy guy and a true gentleman.

I grabbed this from PBS... It’s never too late. Severinsen’s commitment to his instrument and the new strides he makes with his music, even in his ninth decade, proves that it’s never too late to do what you love. “Any mere mortal would say, ‘That’s enough of that, and I’m gonna sit in a rocking chair and just take it easy,’ but not this guy,” said “Tonight Show” producer Jeff Sotzing. Despite a health scare or two, Severinsen is still touring, playing gigs, and teaching the next generation of trumpet players. “Part of the commitment to being a professional is, when you learn something special, you pass it on,” he said. “I am not going to go quietly into the night.” In speaking about his newest relationship with fellow trumpet player Cathy Leach, Severinsen also made a profound observation that also pretty much sums up his philosophy on his career and life. “You stand a pretty good chance of making the same mistakes again, until you just get too damn old for it to matter anymore, and then just say, ‘Oh, the hell with it. It’s too late now.’ It’s never too late. Never too late,” he said.

So Jan Smithers (Bailey from WKRP in Cincinnati) was singing in a band called Hot Cup of Friends with Chris Mancini, son of Henry Mancini. There is no mention of this band in all the internet. No mention of Jan Smither's music career in her wikipedia article. No mention of Chris in Henry Mancini's wiki page. I feel like information has such a short half life now compared to pre-internet days. There is probably an infinity we think we know that we actually don't know at all.

You are totally correct about that. There was a whole lot more music and everything in the 1970s that is completely overlooked now. I have been trying to find more archives from that era, and also playing more great songs from then. I hope this song "Prayer for the Indian Warrior" is highlighted and excerpted as its own single video, although I doubt "Hot Cup of Friends" as a band name really stuck. I don't think they put out an album. I would at least add Chris Mancini and Jan Smithers in parentheses.

Chris was reportedly an uncredited part of the production team for this series and likely pulled this group of musicians together just for this show. They were certainly sincere but not really of the calibre one would normally see on this show. I am guessing Henry with his clout pulled some strings to get his son this spot. It is not clear on what Henry meant by what he said about Smithers ("that is why I am down here...he knows how to pick 'em"). Chris is much better known and far more accomplished as a writer and producer.
