Our whirlwind final week in Amboise (for now) - full of fun! Friends from Austin visited us and helped us get a lot of work done on the house and in the garden. More furniture finally arrived. We visited Clos Lucé and Chateau Chenonceau. We also enjoyed our first French festival right in Amboise, and it was quite the event!
🇫🇷
If you love fixing up old houses, chateau renovation, old home transformation, DIY projects, finding antiques, and all things French, come along on our adventure! We're an American couple renovating a maison bourgeoise (chateau charm on a small scale) in the historic city center of Amboise, in the Loire Valley of France.

The chateau de Chenonceau is built as a bridge on the Cher river. Between 1940 and 1942, the Cher river was a part of the demarcation line ("border") between Nazi occupied France and the Free zone. The Resistance used this "hidden bridge" to smuggle resistance fighters and allied bomber crews to the Free zone.

Yes, it has a very interesting history. Standing on that bridge and imagining that time was really fascinating.

What a feast for the eyes! Between all your new antiques, chandeliers, weeded garden and the delicious-looking meals, why not party on your last night? Thank you for introducing us to your friends. Their guest bedroom was very inviting with the chocolates and flowers. I bet you hated to return home. 😢

Beautiful acquisitions. I can't wait to see how they look in their completed rooms. Garden will be spectacular. You have great friends! If the large chandelier body is becoming electified, the chandilier should be rewired.

I love the old art and furniture pieces you've found for your home! It's awesome because in US, we have nothing like it since our Nation is barely over 200 years old! I also love the music you've put with the video! It's so relaxing!

I am wondering if you worry about squatters while you are away from your Amboise home. I hear that it is a real problem here in France. Enjoyed seeing all the work you got done. I am enjoying my last 4 days in France❤️

Ha ha! Loved your "killer at the window!" Your garden looked a lot better, so nice to have so many strawberries. Is that Baby's Breath I see in the garden? Love that. Wow! Your video just kept going and going with all sorts of lovely things to see. Love Da Vinci's final resting place and the celebration! Great friends! Glad you had some fun. (Remind me, how far away are you from Paris?). Thanks!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it! I think maybe you're seeing the tiny daisy-like flowers, which I've been told is called flea bane. 🙂 We are about 2 hours southwest of Paris. There's a high speed train that is actually faster than driving.

It looks like the design in the simpler alcove is cut off. Maybe there’s more alcove behind that new looking back wall or maybe it was a doorway that was closed. What’s on the other side of that wall?
@AustintoAmboise
@AustintoAmboise 16 дней назад
We think it was a doorway that was closed in. The other side of the wall is now the back of our building, alongside a driveway for the neighboring building.

What a beautiful Chandelier! Can you share what auction sites you are finding your lovely things from?
@AustintoAmboise
@AustintoAmboise 15 дней назад
The auction site is drouot.com/en - it lets you watch auctions held at the Druot auction house in Paris live online, and/or place your top bid for auctions that you won't be watching. It's a really cool site, amazing deals to be found, and it has a good search engine. I also love just reading about the items up for sale and learning more history that way. Be forewarned though, if you are unable to pick up your items right away, you'll have to pay storage fees at some of the auction houses. And if you need things delivered, that also adds up quickly. But if you're able to go and get things yourself within a few days, you will score some incredible bargains! Have fun shopping! 🙂

How wonderful to be able to share your new home and city with your very helpful friends. A visit to Chenonceau is always amazing. How much did you love the floral displays they have there? It’s so beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. I went in November on a misty day and it’s was breathtakingly beautiful. Just love following your channel. I think next time I’m in Amboise I’d love to knock on the door and say hello!

I havent watched the entire vlog yet, but the library looks like it was at one time meant to be a private chapel or devotional. Look at the draped wall pattern at the La Lande chapel, and what you have on your wall in pencil sketch is penciled in swag lines; is the same. The big alcove, or cupula as you called it, would hold a statue probably of Mary, and the pencil drawings of the mouldings show where pedestals were going to be placed. The three ( I think it was 3) circled pencil drawings with a vague head shape inside, I think would have been the sketch for where a religious painting was to be. It definately looks like each circle had a head in the center of each circle, with the circles themself being halo's. I wonder why this was not completed, as it certainly looks like it has been all worked out for placements? Maybe they ran out of money? I think this was original from time house was built. Maybe caught up in some religeous upheavals in the 1700's? I think Hugonauts were persecuted for religeous beliefs through the centuries and left the country. maybe at that point the house was sold or passed into other hands, or simply the owners thought maybe better not to have a chapel in thier home? Fascinating!! That salamander I think is a interior depiction of a gargoyle as seen on many churches. It looks like it has been gilded, but probably not originally gilded at all. probably plaster, but if you imagine it was in stone, it would not look out of place on an outer church wall near roof line. This is a beautiful house. You are so lucky to have found and bought it.

Thanks for your comment! Interesting points, although the decorative work has a date painted on it of 1902. So it isn't an original feature of the house (though maybe the alcove itself is). You can get a better look at all of this in episode 3. Thanks for watching!

Just lovely❣️ I’m curious if you have work visas or how you will be able to stay in France. I followed Mr Bloke on RU-vid, they bought a house in France but could not get working visas and returned to the USA.
@AustintoAmboise
@AustintoAmboise 14 дней назад
We're actually in the fortunate position of not needing a long-term visa. Patrick's mom is from Germany, so he's in the process of acquiring his German passport. That will allow us (as a married couple) to live anywhere in the EU. Thanks for watching!

I believe the alcoves were used to display items of heritage or foreign provenance. There could have been a low display table in each alcove. This was a common practice among the well healed.

Could be... The painted designs just look so specific and symbolic though...
