@dandersonjr

I don't know if you realize this but once this boat is complete and you're using it you two will probably become famous in the boating and the boat building world. This is how people that are respected in an industry start out from picking out a project and seeing it through. People are going to want to pay for your knowledge acquired by actually physically doing the work instead of reading it in a book. At least that's what I think.

I can imagine the satisfaction of actually using a boat that you have completely restored. But how will that compare to the satisfaction gained by doing the work? My bet is that once Sarinda is being enjoyed another worthy project will be discovered in another muddy bank…

I live 40 klm from Ho Chi Minh towards the coast, today's forecast is 30deg and 91% humidity. It rained most of yesterday and I think it will rain all afternoon today. Clothes get soaked so I just get on with it till the jobs done, other days I could be changing 5 times to stay nice. We have fans fitted everywhere, plus 6 moveable ones, we have a huge carport that covers the front garden and that's where we eat most meals. It's great for party's and saves us hiring a tent and closing the road. After lunch is nap time, one because it's hot, two because at 78 I deserve it. A lot of beer is drunk in the evenings sat outside, only use the A/C to cool the bedrooms before going to bed, then it's just a fan overnight. This prevents aches, pains and stuffy heads.

While slowly but steadily going on you start talking about the deck beams, that made me so happy. I think I started watching while you where doing one side of the front, and every time the plastic cover of the deck went off and I saw how the top of the hull did look I wondered what would happen there, but while watching how you 2 did all that work and made everything look soo much better I stared gaining trust this would become something great. And now seeing how the tops are repaired and how things are progressing I cant wait to see the deck going off and on with a new deck. So cool to see this going on and to see sarinda rising up out of the mud..

You two are amazing as you keep going even in the heat we are just coming down from our hot weather after many weeks never below 110 F But we are used to it but it is still hot and our heat has no humidity so that helps i remember the weather in England for my first 32 years so i admire you two sticking to the work. Sarinda is coming along great it will be so good to see her when she goes in the water you can both be so proud when that happens. Wonky was probably happy to see you and to get the treats again, stay safe & well, Ed 40 S 0f Vegas

Having owned four large wood production boats (built in the early to mid 1960s), I can attest to the fact that your boat is in extraordinary condition for its age and lack of maintenance.... as you well know by now, wood boat rot from the deck down.... that so little of the diagonal -planking is rotted is extraordinary. Keep chipping away.... you're both inspirational for your hard work, skill, and deep and loving commitment to each other.

I worked 3 months (back in 91/92 - Nov to early Feb) in the Solomon Islands (summer for them) ... coming from New Zealand we'd peak at about 30C, but in the islands, it peaked at 52C. to acclimatize for the heat, I worked at home in all my winter gear for 6 weeks prior to my flight! ... it was still hot, but not unbearably so. [that said, even the native guys on our work crew thought we were bonkers working with concrete in those temps!] we worked from 6 to 8:30 am then had breakfast, and carried on til 12 before stopping for lunch & a 3hr rest, before another work session - dinner at 6pm & pitch black by 7!

Talking about the differences between Sarinda and Boutari, the BIG one for docking will be....wind. Higher, bigger profile on the water means basically Sarinda is a huge SAIL up above so you'll find that interesting to deal with in certain situations, especially navigating around tight marinas and slips.

I appreciate you taking the time to make the point that the port and starboard sides of the hull are structurally connected. I don't think everyone appreciated the structural connection of the knees to the deck beam and hull trough bolts. Personally, I would put a snug fit post below each deck beam mid ship - just to make sure there was no sag (or to take out a sag). A center beam string line might be useful to determine if there is sag in any one beam. 😊

It takes the average person around 2 weeks for the body to adapt to a new climate(with in reason) so on a month long trip to a hot country you should expect sweat and discomfort for the 2 first weeks and to feel cold the 2 first weeks you are home again. Biology is amazing in its complexity.

In really hot countries you work till the sweat rolls off you with a strong inclination to observe matters in Anglo Saxon. The air conditioning does not work, that is part of your responsibility and you are usually high in a dark hole doing some of the work by feel. The local labour has to be watched as your tools are better than theirs and often vanish if you are inattentive! People wonder what we gave to the world it was the Anglo Saxon work ethic but it is something we are still good at in those situations.

Stop fan-nying about and get to installing those frames!! 🙂 As marthabace632 says, it's bad when you're not used to the heat AND humidity. We've been enjoying 40-deg+ C heat here in southeast Texas lately, so you expect to sweat. Any air movement is good, so yeah, a fan outside is not out of the question. You'll get used to it, and really feel the relief when the humidity drops. Much easier to work when your sweat is evaporating vs. when you're basically swimming in it. Brilliant work, guys, keep it up!!

Having the space to do all the work on her, and what will be spacious accommodation is fabulous, but don't lose sight of the significantly larger bills for running her. Fuel cost will make your eyes water, berthing when cruising will be more difficult to find space and much more costly. Insurance is also a problem for old boats, but at the end you will have preserved a very important historic boat, and have lots to look back on.
